Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi led NDA government at the Centre had given a tremendous boost to financial inclusion. "Just 4-5 years ago we were living in a system where 48 per cent of our population, that is, nearly 600 million people had never seen a bank in their life and were not connected to the banking system. Today, they have bank accounts," he said while addressing the World Congress of Saving and Retail Bank (WCSRB).Jaitley said: "The first task was to bring them into the banking system. So, 330 million accounts were opened in a matter of a few months. It was a massive exercise. It was mainly the public sector banks who reached out to every village through their banking correspondents." "Financial inclusion has seen an unparalleled headway during the NDA government. Millions of poor people are now a part of the banking system," he added.He said that the whole exercise of financial inclusion started with the zero balance .

Hospitality firm OYO said Thursday it has appointed former IndiGo President Aditya Ghosh as the chief executive officer for India and South Asia, effective from December 1 this year. Classic Legends, a subsidiary of Mahindra and Mahindra, Thursday relaunched iconic Czeck motorcycle brand Jawa in India, in three new models - Jawa Forty Two, Jawa and Jawa Perak. The motorcycles will be priced between Rs 1.55 lakh and Rs 1.89 lakh. "We have found a great fit to our two-wheeler business. This a brand (Jawa) very much aligned to Mahindra's values," Mahindra group chairman Anand Mahindra told PTI after the launch. The BSE benchmark Sensex ended 119 points higher Thursday and the broader Nifty went past the 10,600 mark on positive investor sentiment amid easing crude oil prices, firm rupee and fresh foreign fund inflows. The 30-share index opened a shade higher at 35,145.75 points, hovered in the range of 35,402 and 35,118.42, before ending the session at 35,260.54, with a gain of 118.55 points, or 0.34 per cent, over its previous close. The gauge had shed 2.50 points Wednesday in a highly volatile session. The NSE Nifty also closed 40.40 points, or 0.38 per cent, higher at 10,616.70 after shuttling between 10,646.50 and 10,557.50.
