Abandoned coal pits turn into fish farms, provide livelihood in Jharkhand

In the coal-mining heartland of Jharkhand, abandoned water-filled pits left behind by mining companies are being transformed into profitable fish farms, providing livelihoods for displaced communities and addressing protein shortages in rural areas. Around 1,741 such abandoned coal pits exist across Jharkhand, with many dating back to the 1980s. While coal mining companies are legally mandated to undertake scientific closure of these pits, implementation has been poor due to expensive costs involved. The Kuju Fishermen Cooperative Society, operating from the 22-acre Ara coal pit in Ramgarh district, has emerged as a success story in this transformation. Harish Duhan takes over as SECL's CMD, aims for growth & innovation

Coal India arm South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) on Thursday said that Harish Duhan has taken charge as its Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD). With his industry knowledge and strategic vision, Duhan is expected to steer SECL towards greater achievements in coal production, technological advancements, and sustainable development initiatives. Prior to his appointment as CMD of SECL, Duhan served as Director Technical (Operations) at Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), another arm of Coal India. The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) had recommended his name for the top post at SECL on December 7, last year, the company said in a statement. BEML gets Rs 246.78 cr truck supply order from Central Coalfields

State-owned BEML on Thursday said it has secured an order worth Rs 246.78 crore from Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL) for the supply of rear dump trucks which are used in mining operations. As part of the order, BEML said it will supply 48 BH60M rear dump trucks, along with spares, and also provide after-sales service support. "BEML has secured a substantial order worth Rs 246.78 crore from Central Coalfields Limited (CCL)," it said. The trucks have been developed in-house with features like a 360-degree rear camera for comprehensive visibility and improved safety, an automatic fire suppression system for emergency preparedness, and an auto lube system to ensure seamless maintenance, BEML said in a statement. CCL registers record output at 76.09 mt in FY'23, logs 11% growth

Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), a Coal India subsidiary, has posted a record output of 76.09 million tonne (MT) in 2022-23 fiscal, registering 11 per cent growth over the previous fiscal's production of 68.85 million tonne. The target for the fiscal, which ended on Friday, had been fixed at 76 mt. "This is for the first time since 2018-19 when target was not only achieved but it surpassed too," CCL chairman-cum-managing director PM Prasad. Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, he said that the production target for the current fiscal of 2023-24 is 84 million tonne. The Jharkhand-based CIL arm also achieved a record off-take at 75.03 mt during the last financial year, with an increase of 4.5 per cent against 71.8 mt achieved in fiscal 2021-22. "The company's overburden removal (OBR) rose to historic high at 107 million cubic metres (MCuM) in 2022-23 with growth of 7 per cent against 100.1 MCuM in 2021-22," he said. Power Mech bags Rs 9,294 crore contract from Central Coalfields

Power Mech Projects Ltd on Monday said it has bagged a Rs 9,294 crore contract from Coal India arm CCL to develop and operate a mine. The project has been awarded to a consortium of Power Mech and AMR India Ltd. Power Mech is the consortium leader with 74 per cent equity stake and AMR India will hold 26 per cent stake. "Power Mech...has been awarded a Mine Development & Operation (MDO) project from Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Ltd, aggregating to Rs 9,294 crore over the contract period," Power Mech said in a statement. The contract will comprise mine infrastructure development, removal of overburden and extraction of coking coal, processing, crushing and transportation of coal up to washery of CCL, carrying out R&R activities and any other activities incidental to mining as per the project document at Kotre Basantpur Pachmo OCP located in Ramgarh and Bokaro districts of Jharkhand. The project has total coal extraction capacity of 105 million tonne .
