Thousands sleep outside in Nepal after quake kills 157, destroys houses

Thousands of villagers in the mountains of northwestern Nepal slept outdoors Saturday night in the bitter cold after an earthquake killed at least 157 people and damaged or destroyed most homes. Most of the houses in villages in Jajarkot district either collapsed or were severely damaged by the sudden earthquake Friday night, while the few concrete houses in towns were also damaged. We are waiting to cremate the bodies of our villagers and have been trying to take care of the people who were injured in the earthquake, said Lal Bahadur Bika, a resident of Chiuri village, pointing to 13 bodies wrapped in white cloth awaiting cremation on Sunday morning. Most houses in Chiuri village collapsed. People used whatever they could find to set up shelter for the night, using plastic sheets and old clothes to keep them warm. 3 dead as bus overshoots platform at terminus in AP, CM announces ex-gratia

Three people were killed when an APSRTC bus overshot the platform at the bus terminus here on Monday. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock and grief over the mishap at the Pandit Nehru bus terminus here and announced ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh to the kin of the deceased. The incident occurred this morning when an RTC bus crashed into platform no. 12 of the terminus here and mowed down three people. An 18-month-old girl, who sustained injuries, died later at a hospital here. "Instead of reversing the vehicle, the driver drove forward, overshooting the platform, regional manager M Yesu Danam told PTI. Bihar boat capsize: Rescue operation on, 2 more pulled out from Saryu river

Two more persons were pulled out from the Saryu River in Bihar's Saran district on Thursday, taking the total number of rescued people to 12 in the boat tragedy a day before, an official said. The toll remained unchanged at two as no new body was recovered, Saran District Magistrate Aman Samir said. "So far, 12 people have been rescued, including those who managed to swim to the river bank. Rescue operation is still on to trace the five missing persons," Samir told PTI. The two deceased were women and identified as Phool Kumari and Chatthiya Devi. They were residents of Matiyar village. The boat with 19 people on board capsized in the river on Wednesday evening near Matiyar Ghat in Manjhi block. Strong earthquake shakes Timor region of Indonesia, no deaths reported

An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 struck Indonesia's Timor island on Thursday, causing panic and light damages to several buildings and houses but there no immediate reports of casualties. The US Geological Survey reported the quake had a depth of 36.1 kilometers (22.4 miles) and its epicenter was located 21 kilometers (13 miles) north-northeast of Kupang, the capital city of East Nusa Tenggara province. Daryono, who heads the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency, said the land-based quake was causing panic as it was strongly felt in several cities and villages. The agency measured a preliminary magnitude of 6.6 for the quake and then revised it to 6.3. Variations in early measurements of quakes are common. Death toll rises to 14 in Andhra Pradesh passenger train accident

The toll in the collision involving two passenger trains in Andhra Pradesh rose to 14 and the number of injured stood at 50 and traffic was affected on the Howrah-Chennai line, officials said on Monday. "Thirteen died at the accident site itself and one succumbed while undergoing treatment," Joint Collector Mayur Ashok said about Sunday's incident. Superintendent of Police M Deepika said 50 people were injured. A senior Railway official said the injured had been shifted to hospitals in Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram. Kalamassery blasts: Toll rises to 3 as 12-year-old girl succumbs to wounds

The death toll from the blasts at a Christian religious gathering near this port city has risen to three, according to an official statement. IED device caused blast at convention centre in Kerala: State Police chief

The blast at a convention centre in Kerala on Sunday that claimed one life and injured 36 others was caused due to an improvised explosive device (IED), state DGP Shaik Darvesh Saheb said.
