Delhi sizzles at 42.8°C, logs hottest day of the year so far in April

The national capital sweltered on Saturday, recording its highest maximum temperature of the year so far. Several weather stations reported heatwave conditions across the city, even as the IMD has forecast rain from Monday to Wednesday, bringing some hope of respite to Delhiites. While a yellow alert had been issued for Saturday, a similar alert remains in place for Sunday as well, warning people of isolated heatwave conditions. On Saturday, Safdarjung, representative of the city's weather, recorded a maximum temperature of 42.8 degrees Celsius, 5.1 degrees above normal and a 0.9-degree rise from the day before, thus fulfilling the criteria for a heatwave. According to the India Meteorological Department, a heatwave is classified when the maximum temperature is 40 degrees Celsius or above, and it is 4.5 degrees to 6.4 degrees above normal. Office rents cross ₹100/sq ft a month in B'luru, NCR amid demand-supply gap

Average monthly rentals for prime office spaces in Bengaluru and Delhi-NCR have crossed Rs 100 per sq ft mark for the first time as demand for prime workspaces exceeds supply, according to Knight Frank data. In Mumbai, the average office rentals are already above Rs 100 per sq ft. Real estate consultant Knight Frank data showed that the average rentals for office spaces rose in a range of 2-15 per cent during January-March 2026 across eight major cities of India compared to the same period last year. The maximum annual growth of 15 per cent in office rent was seen in Delhi-NCR and Kolkata. "The supply constraints across key markets have supported a sustained rental upcycle since early 2022...," the consultant said in its latest Q1 (January-March) 2026 report on the Indian office market. SC dismisses Umar Khalid review plea in Delhi riots case, denies bail again

The Supreme Court has dismissed activist Umar Khalid's plea seeking a review of a verdict denying him bail, while observing that there are reasonable grounds to believe the allegations levelled against him in connection with a conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots. A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria also rejected the plea seeking an oral hearing of the review petition. "Having gone through the review petition and also the documents enclosed, we do not find any good ground and reason to review the judgment dated January 5, 2026. Accordingly, the review petition is dismissed," the bench said in its April 16 order. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor, which will cut travel time between the two cities to nearly half. The 213 km-long six-lane access-controlled Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor has been built at a cost of over Rs 12,000 crore. The corridor traverses through the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and will reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours at present to around two and a half hours, according to an official statement. The Delhi-Dehradun economic corridor will play a pivotal role in strengthening regional economic growth by enhancing connectivity between major tourism and economic centres as well as opening new avenues for trade and development across the region. Delhi's August Kranti Bhawan, Bhikaji Cama Place to be redeveloped

State-owned NBCC Ltd has entered into an MoU with HUDCO to redevelop August Kranti Bhawan in the national capital. In a regulatory filing on Monday, NBCC said it has entered into two different Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO). The first MoU relates to the redevelopment of August Kranti Bhawan, Bhikaji Cama Place, New Delhi. HUDCO and NBCC have agreed to collaborate and jointly work towards the redevelopment of leasehold plot admeasuring 18830 square metre. NBCC would do techno-economic feasibility study, construction and project management and monetization of built-up space. Under the second MoU, HUDCO will provide funds for the ongoing and upcoming projects of NBCC's self-sustainable model. NBCC is into project management consultancy and real estate business.

Centre announces regularisation policy for unauthorised colonies of Delhi

The Centre on Tuesday announced a revised "as is where is" based regularisation policy to simplify the permission process for registration of properties and construction activities in unauthorised colonies of the national capital. The revised policy ends the requirement of a layout plan for registration of already constructed buildings in 1,511 out of the total 1,731 unauthorised colonies in Delhi. Also, the Revenue Department of the Delhi government will now issue conveyance deeds for ownership rights instead of the DDA. In a joint press conference attended by Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed the announcement of the policy as a big day for the people of the city. She said that applications for ownership of properties under the revised policy can be filed online through the PM-UDAY portal from April 24, adding that the move will benefit nearly 50 lakh residents of such colonies. The national capital experienced a slight increase in minimum temperature on Saturday, while the maximum temperature decreased due to persistent cloudy conditions throughout the day. Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for the day, only isolated areas of Delhi received light rain during the night between Friday and Saturday. Delhi mandates LPG supply to businesses only if they have PNG connection

The Delhi government has tightened norms for the supply of commercial LPG cylinders, making it mandatory for businesses to either have or apply for a piped natural gas (PNG) connection in areas where the network is available, according to an official order. In an order issued by the Food, Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department on April 2, the government amended a key clause of its recently notified policy on distribution of commercial LPG cylinders. Under the revised rules, commercial and industrial consumers will be eligible to receive LPG supplies only if they are registered with the concerned oil marketing company (OMC) and have applied for a PNG connection, wherever the network exists. The Delhi government has rolled out the 'Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana', aimed at supporting the education and long-term financial security of the girl child through phased financial assistance from birth till higher education. In a gazette notification issued on March 30, the Department of Women and Child Development detailed the 'Delhi Lakhpati Bitiya Scheme Rules', which came into force from Wednesday. The new scheme replaces the Ladli Scheme. Under the scheme, financial assistance of up to Rs 61,000 will be provided to eligible beneficiaries in instalments linked to key educational and age-related milestones, and it will mature to Rs 1.20 lakh with interest. Delhi Police arrests Mysuru man for sending over 1,100 hoax bomb threats

Delhi Police has arrested a man from Mysuru in Karnataka for allegedly sending more than 1,100 hoax bomb threats to schools, high courts and government offices across the country, officials said on Monday. The accused, identified as Srinivas Louis, 47, was apprehended from his rented accommodation on Saturday following a joint operation by Delhi Police and local police teams, the officials said. The arrest comes amid a recent spate of bomb threat messages being sent to the Delhi High Court, assembly and several educational and government institutions. Police said Louis is a postgraduate and a native of Bengaluru. He is currently unemployed and lives with his mother, a retired government employee. Traffic curbs in central Delhi for half marathon on Mar 29: Police advisory

The Delhi Traffic Police on Saturday issued an advisory ahead of a half-marathon on March 29, warning of traffic restrictions in central parts of the city. The event organised by Times Internet Limited will begin at 5 am from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and continue till 10 am, covering key stretches including C-Hexagon, Kartavya Path, Janpath, Ashoka Road and Mansingh Road before culminating at the stadium. According to the advisory, no vehicles will be allowed to halt or park on India Gate, Mansingh Road, Janpath, Kartavya Path, Ashoka Road, Akbar Road, and along the marathon route.
