Trai invites view to make smartphones affordable for digital inclusion

Telecom regulator Trai on Thursday invited public comments to explore ways and means to make smartphone affordable in the country for digital inclusion. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) as part of its consultation paper on "Digital Inclusion in the Era of Emerging Technologies" will assess if measures taken by the government such as focussing on local manufacturing are sufficient to bring down the prices of smartphones in India. "What measures should be taken to make digital devices and digital connectivity affordable to the citizens for empowering them to maximize the benefits of an inclusive digital society?" Trai asked in the consultation paper. In the paper, Trai has cited example of smartphone financing and exploring viability of second hand smartphones in the country. Need to broaden participation to expand digital commerce in India: ONDC

The country needs wider participation of buyers and sellers to expand digital commerce in the next few years, Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) CEO T Koshy said on Tuesday. "If you look at today's digital commerce in the country, it is limited to 10 per cent and just 2-3 per cent on the buyer side, so we need to broaden and expand the participation so that the current levels can go up to 25-30 per cent in the next few years. Consultation on Digital India legislation to commence soon: MoS IT

The government will soon commence consultation on Digital India legislation that will outline the framework for regulation of emerging technologies, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Thursday. 80% of SMEs think govt funding key to unlocking digitalisation: Survey

A majority (80 per cent) of small and medium enterprises in the country believe the government funding is key to unlocking digitalisation in the future, according to a study by Gartner-acquired software selection platform Capterra. The 'State of Digitalisation in India survey: Major barriers and role of government' report is based on responses collected from 435 respondents, including a group of managers, senior managers, or CEOs and founders -- labelled as decision makers. Out of these, 341 work for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), while 94 work for companies having more than 250 employees. The study found that 65 per cent of surveyed companies have received government funding for digitisation at least once, while 52 per cent of respondents said digitalisation would be challenging or even impossible without government funding. Trials for Coal India's in-house e-auction platform successful: Officials

The trials for Coal India's in-house e-auction platform have been carried out satisfactorily, and the mechanism can have a full-fledged rollout across the company's coal-producing subsidiaries, officials said Sunday. A total of seven trial auctions involving nearly 18 million tonnes of coal have been conducted, they said. The mining major has entrusted its wholly owned subsidiary Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI) to rollout the in-house e-auction system, with technical assistance from the National Informatics Centre. At present, external agencies like MSTC and mjunction are in agreement with Coal India to execute e-auctions of coal. "During initial trials, there were some teething issues that were resolved by CMPDI and NIC officials. In subsequent e-auctions, the trials were conducted smoothly. A new law that defines how companies should process users' data came into force with the President giving assent to the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act passed by Parliament in the just-concluded monsoon session. Digital competition law panel likely to finalise its report next month

The government-appointed digital competition law panel is looking into various aspects, including that of multiple agencies regulating competition in the digital markets, and is likely to finalise its report in August, according to a senior official. Chaired by Corporate Affairs Secretary Manoj Govil, the committee, which has been given more time to finalise its report, has so far held 11 meetings. On the competition issues in the digital markets, various regulatory agencies and departments are involved, including the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, a senior government official said on Monday. Digital Skills University to be opened in Jharkhand soon: CM Hemant

Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren on Thursday announced that a Digital Skills University will be opened in the state where job-oriented education will be provided to the less educated youth. Addressing the students at the 2nd Convocation of Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Ranchi, Soren said that the university would come up at cost of about Rs 300- 400 crore. "We have been conducting skill development programmes. Recently, government has decided to open a digital skills university in a bid to provide technical education to the less educated youth so that they could be provided jobs," Soren said. The CM said, "This is the age of technology. There has been expansion in the field of education in which institutes like IIT-ISM, BIT Mesra, IIM, XLRI and NIT were opened.
