Two trucks collide in UP; two killed, 4 injured
Two people were killed and four others injured in a collision between two trucks on Moradabad-Farrukhabad road here Wednesday morning, police said. The accident took place between Vankota and Sohi villages, a police official said, adding, the identity of the deceased was being ascertained. The four injured were admitted to the district hospital where two of them were stated to be in a serious condition, he added. Further details are awaited.
Up to 85,000 children 'dead of starvation or disease in Yemen'
As many as 85,000 infants under the age of five may have died from starvation or disease since 2015 in war-ravaged Yemen, humanitarian organisation Save the Children said Wednesday. It said the estimate was based on data compiled by the United Nations, which has warned that up to 14 million people are at risk of famine in Yemen, where Saudi-backed forces are battling Iran-aligned Huthi rebels. "For every child killed by bombs and bullets, dozens are starving to death and it's entirely preventable," said Tamer Kirolos, Save the Children's country director in Yemen. "Children who die in this way suffer immensely as their vital organ functions slow down and eventually stop," he said. "Their immune systems are so weak they are more prone to infections with some too frail to even cry. Parents are having to witness their children wasting away, unable to do anything about it." Americans, Canadians are warned not to eat romaine lettuce
Health officials in the US and Canada told people Tuesday to stop eating romaine lettuce because of a new E. coli outbreak. The US Food and Drug Administration said it is working with officials in Canada on the outbreak, which has sickened 32 people in 11 states and 18 people in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The strain identified is different than the one linked to romaine earlier this year but appears similar to last year's outbreak linked to leafy greens. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said the agency doesn't have enough information to ask suppliers for a recall, but he suggested that supermarkets and restaurants should withdraw romaine until the source of the contamination can be identified. People are also being advised to throw out any romaine they have at home. The contaminated lettuce is likely still on the market, Gottlieb told The Associated Press in a phone interview. : Four people, including an environment protection official of the Kalpakam Atomic Power Plant, were killed Wednesday when their car hit a median at Chinnasalem, police said here. TVS Motor contributes Rs 2 crore as cyclone relief
: Two and three-wheeler maker TVS Motor has contributed Rs two crore to the Tamil Nadu government to take up relief work in cyclone affected districts of the State. The company's Chairman and Managing Director Venu Srinivasan handed over the cheque to Chief Minister K Palaniswami at his residence, a press release said. Srinivasan Services Trust, the company's corporate social responsibility division also sent relief materials worth Rs one crore to Nagapattinam, one of the worst affected districts of the State in the cyclone. Palaniswami had visited the districts hit by cyclone Gaja Tuesday and distributed relief materials to the affected people and indicated he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to seek central assistance. The cyclone crossed the coast on November 16 near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district, about 350 km from Chennai, with a speed of up to 120 kmph, claiming 46 lives and leaving a trail of destruction in over 10 districts in Tamil Nadu.
Private trainee aircraft crashes in Telangana's Ranga Reddy district
A private trainee aircraft which belongs to the Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy crashed near Mokila village of Shankarpally Mandal in this district on Wednesday.The pilot of the aircraft, Bhaskar Bhushan, had to make an emergency landing in agricultural fields on the outskirts of the village due to a technical glitch in the plane.Bhushan, a student pilot who was flying solo, has been hospitalised and is stated to be safe.Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy marketing head Umesh Kamat told ANI, "Bharat Bhushan, a trainee student who was flying a trainee aircraft, made an emergency landing in the fields in Mokila Village. The death toll from the devastating wildfire in northern California rose to 81 Tuesday with the discovery of two more sets of remains, officials said. The number of people listed as unaccounted for in the deadliest and most destructive fire in state history jumped up by nearly 200 to 870. This number has been fluctuating a lot in recent days amid the confusion of the search for bodies in the town of Paradise, which was largely destroyed by the flames. Car runs over 5 labourers sleeping on bridge in Hisar
At least five people were killed and nine injured after a car ran over labourers who were sleeping on the pavement of a bridge here in the wee hours on Wednesday.The speeding car going towards Hansi hit the divider of the bridge and ran over the labourers who were sleeping on the pavement.As the car swerved killing the labourers, it hit the safety railings of the bridge and fell off 70 feet down."We were sleeping on the pavement when a car ran over the labourers. At least 10-15 of us were sleeping," said one of the injured. The labourers were natives of Bihar's Khagaria district.The injured have been shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Two killed after being run over by bus
Two passengers were killed and over 30 others injured when they were hit by a bus near Nagla Revti village, police said Wednesday. Some of the passengers of a bus on its way to Farrukhabad from Delhi had got down as the driver was repairing the headlight on Tuesday night when another bus hit them, Station Officer, Jaithara, Chaman Goswami said. While Pradip (20), who was standing along the driver, died on the spot , Arjesh (23) succumbed to injuries later, Goswami said. The injured were admitted to the district hospital. The drivers of both buses fled the scene after the accident.
Maha: Six of family killed in car-truck collision
Six persons of a family, including two women and as many children, were Wednesday killed when their car collided with a truck on Manmad--Yeola road in Nashik district of Maharashtra, police said. The car in which the family was travelling was reduced to pulp due to the impact of the collision, a Yeola taluka police station official said. The car was headed towards Yeola, around 85 kms away from here, when the truck rammed into it at Visapur phata (diversion) around 4:30 AM, he said, adding that the accident disrupted vehicular traffic for several hours. The truck driver fled the spot after the accident, the official said. The deceased are identified as Balasaheb Aanad (60), his wife Indubai (55), car driver Shrinath Aanad (25), Mohini Khandave, Hari khandave (5) and Bhimabai Rohakale(70).
Trainer aircraft crashes near Hyderabad, pilot injured
A trainer aircraft crashed in an agriculture field in Mokila area near here Wednesday resulting in minor injury to the trainee pilot, police said. The aircraft belonged to the city-based Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy, they said adding the accident occurred at around 11.30 am. "As per preliminary information, the aircraft crashed due to some technical problem... the trainee pilot is safe," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shamshabad Zone) N Prakash Reddy told PTI. The pilothas been hospitalised, he added.
Venus Williams reaches settlement in fatal crash case
Former world number one Venus Williams has reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit with the family of a person who died in a fatal car crash that she had in June last year.The amount of money involved in the agreement is not known but the court documents confirm that the settlement is financial in nature which would cover certain expenses, TMZ Sports reported.On June 9, Williams was involved in a car collision with Jerome Barson and his wife near Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.The 78-year-old man died 13 days after the accident while undergoing treatment.After his death, the Barson family filed a wrongful death suit against Williams.Police had initially said that Williams was being held responsible for "violating the right of way of [the other driver]."However, the final report found that neither Williams nor the Barsons had violated the rule and no criminal charges would be filed in the car collision.
