Over 6,400 participants from 16 states on Sunday turned up for the 'Jamshedpur Run-a-Thon 2018' at J R D Tata Sports complex here, the organisers said. The 10-km and 7-km race events were open to all Indian nationals, while the 5-km run was for under-16 boys and girls, Tata Steel said in a release. Harmanjot Singh, winner of the 10-km (male) category, finished the race in 32 minutes and 04 seconds, whereas the winner of 10-km (female) Puja Mondal completed the race in 37 minutes and 54 seconds to win a cash prize of Rs 51,000 each. Three persons standing beside a national highway were killed and 12 passengers injured when a private bus skidded off the road and overturned in Bihar's Darbhanga district on Sunday, police said. The accident occurred near Basaila More under the jurisdiction of Sadar police station when the bus driver lost control over it while giving side to a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. It skidded off NH 57, and overturned in the field beside the road before hitting three persons who were waiting beside the road to catch another bus, police said. These three persons, who were in the age group of 50-60, died on the spot. All the 12 injured persons have been admitted to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital here. An oil spill of "less than two tonne" off the Chennai coast was caused due to a rupture in a hose of a tanker ship berthed at Kamarajar Port here early Sunday, officials said. The incident occurred at 4.03 AM this morning when the ship, MT Coral Stars was discharging fuel oil through the 'flexible hose' at the Marine Liquid Terminal 1 at the port. The hose from the berth side got ruptured due to which there was an oil spill in the Bay of Bengal, a Coast Guard official said, adding two Coast Guard vessels have been despatched to assess the damage. "A helicopter carried out two sorties. A Pollution Response Vessel is on the way from Vishakapatnam. It has been called as a precautionary measure," the official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Meanwhile, Kamarajar Port said, the flexible hose got snapped from the berth side and the discharge of the fuel oil was stopped by operating the emergency control button. Fourteen persons were killed and as many injured Sunday when the bus in which they were travelling fell into a 150-metre deep gorge in Uttarkashi district, an official said. The private bus was on its way to Vikas Nagar from Jankichatti, near the Himalayan shrine of Yamunotri, when it fell into the gorge near Damta, District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan said. Twelve people died at the spot and two succumbed at a hospital, he said. A search and rescue operation by police with the help of locals is underway, the official said, adding that some bodies could be stuck in the bushes. Two persons were killed when a bus collided with a truck in Bundi district of Rajasthan, police said Sunday. The drivers of both the vehicles died on the spot after the collision on the KotaLalsot mega highway on Saturday, they said. The West Bengal government is committed to curbing traffic offences, its initiatives have significantly reduced road accidents in the state, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted on Sunday. On the occasion of 'World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims', the CM said her campaign - 'Safe Drive, Save Life' - has earned the praise of the Supreme Court. "Today is World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. Our government is committed towards reducing incidents of road accidents in #Bangla. Our #SafeDriveSaveLife campaign has reduced such incidents significantly, earning praise of the Supreme Court," Banerjee tweeted. The state government launched the campaign in 2016 as part of its initiatives to inculcate a "sense of safe driving and responsible road behaviour" among people.
