Suburban services of Western Railway were hit in the peak hours Thursday evening when a piece of cloth fell on its electricity supplying instrument causing a fire, a senior official said. The incident took place around 7.50 pm between Bandra and Khar Road stations, and commuters were asked to get down from the train as a precautionary measures, the WR official said. "A piece of cloth fell from Foot Over Bridge (FOB) on the Overhead Equipment (OHE) that supplies electric power to the engine coach of the local train. OHE caught fire and the train, going towards Virar, came to a halt as a result," he said. The services resumed by 8.21 pm and there was no major disruption, claimed the official. Cyclone 'Gaja' is very likely to cross the Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Cuddalore, South of Nagapattinam by early hours of Friday as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph, a weather bulletin said Thursday night. The state government, which has put its machinery in full alert in vulnerable districts, said a total of 63,203 people have been evacuated and housed in 331 relief centres in six districts including Cuddalore and Nagapattinam. Earlier, an India Meteorological Department bulletin at 7.50 pm said the outer band of the system has already entered the coast and rainfall has commenced over coastal areas of Tamil Nadu. Food safety regulator FSSAI Thursday said imported pulses and beans are safe for consumption as tests conducted in the last one month found no residue of glyphosate in these commodities. Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide which is used to kill weeds, especially annual broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops. Last month, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had instructed its import offices at ports to start monitoring for presence of glyphosate in pulses and beans. "Pulses and beans imported into India are safe. ...This is based on results of testing of these products over the past one month," the regulator said in a statement. An Indian Air Force helicopter made a "precautionary" landing due to some technical issues in a field in Barmer district's Sheo area on Thursday, officials said. The pilot and his crew are safe, they said. "The pilot had to make the precautionary landing because of some technical problem in the helicopter," Defence spokesperson Col. Sombit Ghosh said. Station House Officer (SHO), Sheo, Manaram Garg said,The IAF helicopter landed in a field near Nimla village. With the 16-km stretch between Ameerpet and L B Nagar opened in September, the Metro Rail has covered 46 km and become the second largest such railway network, next only to Delhi, a press statement said. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has initiated a series of preemptive and proactive measures to prevent loss of lives of fishermen as cyclone 'Gaja' intensified into a severe cyclonic storm Thursday, the Defence Ministry said. Around eight ICG ships and two Dornier aircraft were pressed into action since November 9 for issuance of advisories and warnings in local languages to fishermen at sea for their safe return to ports, it said. The Coast Guard Remote Operating Stations have also requested fisheries authorities in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to account for all fishing boats. "The ICG conducted series of community interaction programmes in Kanyakumari, Mandapam, Rameswaram, Cuddalore, Chennai, Nellore, Nizampatnam, Uppada and Vishakhapatnam to sensitise fishermen and coastal population for taking safety measures for the impending cyclone," the statement said. Police say 40 adults and children have been injured, five of them "very seriously," in a head-on collision involving two public buses in southern Germany. A spokesman for Bavarian police said the people injured in the Thursday crash outside Nuremberg included school children, but he couldn't immediately say how many. Bert Rauenbusch told The Associated Press that multiple helicopters were being used to airlift those with the most serious injuries to hospitals. He says police are investigating the cause of the crash, which also involved a third vehicle.
Five people were killed when their car collided with a bus on East Coast Road near Mamallapuram Thursday, the police said. The five, all in their early twenties, were proceeding to Chennai from Puducherry, they said. "The incident took place at around 2 am. The driver seems to have attempted to overtake a four-wheeler, but ended up colliding with a bus," police added.
A 21-year-old youth died after he apparently fell off a cliff while trying to paraglide solo in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district on Thursday, police said. Neel Chand, a resident of Dhara village, suffered serious injuries in the accident in Dobhi area. The Centre has told the Supreme Court that 23 states and Union territories (UTs) have developed the websites of their state disaster management authority (SDMA) in vernacular language also to make it easier for people to understand the issues. The Centre's submission came before a bench comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and Deepak Gupta in a matter in which the apex court had in September this year said it was "disheartening" to note that websites of all SDMAs were not bilingual or in vernacular language. The government told the bench that if some more time was granted, all the states and UTs would comply with the suggestion to make websites of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and SDMAs multilingual or in vernacular language. "Four weeks' time, as prayed for, is granted. List the matter after four weeks," the bench said.
