The Indian Navy's diving team on Sunday undertook a search operation to trace three people who suspected to have drowned in Tehri lake last week.The three people went missing after the truck they were traveling in met with an accident and fell into the lake on November 3.The incident reportedly took place around 9 pm about 200 metres ahead of Pippaldi bridge.At the time of the accident, one of the passengers in the truck, namely Rakesh Lal, got injured as he fell off the vehicle. The three other passengers, namely Tejulal, Suresh Lal and driver Anil Bhandari are missing.
A 5-magnitude earthquake hit Pithoragarh, Didihatand Munsiyari sub-divisions of this border district of Uttarakhand Sunday. The quake occurred at 12.37 pm, the District Disaster Management office said here. It had a latitude of 29.7 degree north and a longitude of 80.6 degree east. A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has joined an ongoing operation to locate three persons who are believed to have being buried alive following a landslide on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway last week, officials said on Sunday. The landslide struck the highway last Monday at Battery Cheshma in Ramban district and the evidence at the scene suggested that an apple-laden truck, coming from Srinagar to Jammu, got caught in the landslide and rolled down into a 600-feet gorge near the site. However, the fate of the occupants could not be ascertained even as rescuers reached the bed of the gorge near Bishlari nullah (stream) and recovered some mangled parts of the vehicle, Ramban Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anita Sharma told PTI. A man was arrested in Gujarat's Surat after his daughter complained that he had raped her four years ago, police said Sunday. The victim disclosed the incident to her mother's brother, following which a case was registered Saturday and the accused, an autorickshaw driver, was arrested the same day, said sub inspector C R Desai of Amroli police station. "According to the victim, who is now 15 years old, her father had raped her four years ago when her mother was away, and had threatened her to not reveal it to anyone," Desai said. "The victim, whose mother died on November 7 from injuries sustained in a road accident, had gone to her uncle's place and then refused to go back home. To cope with poor visibility and ensure passengers' safety during foggy weather, the East Coast Railway has instructed its staff members to take sufficient precautions such as using detonators and regulating the speed of trains. Loco pilots have been instructed to regulate train speed depending on visibility during fog and dense weather condition in winter, an ECoR release said. The train staff members are being sensitised by railway officers and safety counsellors to cope with the situation at night and early morning in areas which are likely to be affected by fog, the release said. Precautions have been taken regarding running of trains during winter for which the Railways already have a well laid-down procedure, the release said. The Railways are using detonators when visibility is severely impaired, to provide an audible indication to the locomotive crew that the train is approaching a signal. Snow and rain may occur at some places in Himachal Pradesh from November 11 to 14, the Meteorological department said Sunday. Western disturbance may lead to occurrence of light to moderate rainfall and snowfall at isolated to scattered places in the state during this period, Manmohan Singh, Director, Meteorological Centre, Shimla said. The Kullu district administration has already sounded an alert in view of the forecast and urged people not to go the high reaches of Himachal Pradesh, an official said. In a statement issued here, Kullu Deputy Commissioner Yunus has appealed to the public to avoid going to high reaches in view of the prediction of snowfall and rainfall. In case of emergency, the district disaster management authority (DDMA) can be contacted on toll free number '1077', the official added.
A 42-year-old fisherman went missing after two boats collided in the Arabian Sea off the Vasai coast in Maharashtra's Palghar district in the early hours of Sunday, police said. The mishap took place around 1.15 am at nearly 15 nautical miles from the Vasai port, located about 70 km from here, an official at the Vasai police station said. A fishing boat, named 'Morning Star', having seven fishermen on board, collided with another unidentified vessel. Following the collision, one fisherman from the 'Morning Star' boat fell into the waters, the official said. Police were alerted about the incident, he said, adding that personnel of the Coast Guard, local police and the district disaster management cell were making all efforts to trace the missing fisherman.
Four members of a family, including two children, were charred to death in a fire in their isolated residence at a nearby village Sunday, police said. The bodies of 35-year old Srinivasa Reddy, an autorickshaw driver, his wife, son and daughter were found in the bedroom of their small house at Madibaka village, about 25 km from here, they said. Police and fire force personnel, on being alerted by neighbours in the area, rushed and put out the fire and broke open the door when they found the four badly charred bodies. The children were aged under ten. The incident was suspected to have occurred in the early hours Sunday, police said adding the cause of the fire was being investigated. They were looking into all angles, including suicide or an accidental fire, police added.
The death toll in the accident involving a car and a private bus near here Saturday evening has gone up to five, with two children also succumbing to their injuries, police said Sunday. Three people had died on the spot and as many others were injured when their car proceeding to Sinnar in Nashik district collided with the luxury bus, which was heading towards the temple town of Shirdi in Ahmednagar district, an official of the Wavi police station said. The mishap had taken place around 6 pm at Bhokani village on the Sinnar-Shirdi road, about 70 km from here in North Maharashtra, he said. Of the three injured persons, two children, both aged 14, died while being shifted to a hospital on Saturday night, he said. The other injured person was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Nashik, the official said. All the deceased were residents of Mira Road area in the neighbouring Thane district, he added.
