The water level of the Yamuna today started receding, a day after it rose to 206.05 metres, the maximum level for the river in the last five years. According to an official of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, the water level dropped to 204.82 metres this afternoon and it is expected to recede further. At 8 pm yesterday, the Yamuna river was flowing at 206.05 metres at Old Yamuna Bridge which has been closed for vehicular traffic. The overflowing water of the Yamuna entered some houses in low-lying areas of Burari in north Delhi yesterday, officials said. As many as 15 people who were stranded in flood waters were rescued from the area yesterday. So far, a total of 13,915 people have been moved to safer places due to the rising water levels. They have been accommodated in 1,461 tents and temporary shelters, where they are being provided food and medical help.

An SUV plunged 15-20 feet deep after a service road caved in alongside the Agra-Lucknow expressway today following heavy rains, prompting the Uttar Pradesh government to order a probe. However, no one was injured in the incident, officials said. "A third-party probe has been ordered into the caving-in of the side road of the expressway (16 km from Agra towards Lucknow) by RITES Limited. The construction of the damaged road will be done by the construction agency at its cost," Uttar Pradesh Expressway Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) Chairman Avanish Awasthi said. The UP government asked railways consultancy firm RITES Limited to complete the probe within 15 days. Awasthi said that all the agencies involved in the construction of the expressway have been asked to keep an eye on the situation and ensure proper drainage arrangements. An Aeromexico flight crashed on takeoff during a heavy hail storm in northern Mexico, engulfing the plane in flames and injuring 97 people, officials said. A massive rescue operation is underway to save a three-year-old girl in Bihar after she fell into an open borewell in Munger district, an official said on Wednesday.The girl, Sanno, fell into a 110-feet deep borewell in Murgiachak area under Kotwali Police station of Munger on Tuesday afternoon. Fifteen people, including three children, were rescued from drowning in Yamuna river near Shamshan Ghat in north Delhi's Burari, police said today. Yesterday, the police were informed that about 15 members of a family were about to drown in the river and required emergency help, a police officer said. Eight men, four women and three children were trapped in the water and were unable to come out, the officer said. The police with the help of locals, the NDRF and the Delhi Fire Service managed to rescue them. A senior officer from Delhi Fire Service said two fire tenders were rushed to the spot for the rescue operation. The police said it took them nearly an hour to rescue the victims. Despite repeated warnings, villagers were still venturing into their agricultural fields on the banks of Yamuna, they said. The victims were agricultural labourers based in Ghadi village in Burari, they added.

At least 26 people were injured in an accident involving five vehicles that also caught fire on NH-33 in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district, police said today. The accident occurred last night at Chutupalu valley when a truck carrying LPG cylinders rammed into the rear of a passenger bus that overturned and caught fire. The fire of the bus spread rapidly to the truck, an ambulance and an oil tanker, Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Ramgarh, Radha Prem Kishore said. The ambulance carrying a body and two persons was stuck at the spot there while the tanker had overturned earlier at the same spot. At least 24 passengers of the bus and the two persons accompany the body in the ambulance suffered burn injuries, he said adding that its driver has been missing. Owing to the discharge of large amounts of water from a barrage, the water level in the Yamuna river is inching towards the danger mark in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district, an official said today. "Today, Yamuna was flowing at the warning level and the rising trend of the river is continuing," Additional District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar said. More than three-lakh cusec of water was discharged from Hathnikund barrage on Saturday, Kumar said, adding that its impact would be visible tomorrow night or the day after tomorrow when the water released from Hathnikund would reach Mathura. The sub-divisional magistrates have been instructed to maintain vigil round the clock. People living in low-lying areas have been advised to shift to flood posts if the rising trend continues, he added. The flood water has reached colonies based in flood zone of Mathura and Vrindaban, he said, adding that they would be shifted to flood outposts if the water entered into their colony.
