Tremors felt in Himachal's Kangra

An earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter Scale shook Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district today, the Meteorological Department said. The tremors were felt in and around Kangra district at 1.18 am. However, there are no immediate reports of any damage to property. The epicentre was at a depth of 10 km in Kangra district, the department said. This is third quake within a week in Kangra. Earlier a low-intensity quake measuring 2.9 and a moderate quake measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale hit Kangra on July 25 and July 27 respectively.

More than 500 hikers evacuated from Indonesian volcano

More than 500 hikers and their guides have been successfully evacuated from an Indonesian volcano after a deadly earthquake triggered landslides that trapped them on the mountain, officials said today. Tonnes of rock and mud were dislodged on Mount Rinjani in the 6.4-magnitude quake, which struck early Sunday and was followed by scores of aftershocks, blocking the hiking routes that crisscross the mountain. An estimated 560 stranded trekkers were thought to have included citizens from the United States, France, the Netherlands, Thailand and Germany, as well as many other countries, according to search and rescue officials. MH-370: Malaysian report fails to determine cause of plane's disappearance

Assam: NDRF evacuates 114 people from water-logged areas

As many as 114 people were evacuated from water-logged low-lying areas of Assam's Sivaganga district by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) on Monday.The areas were water-logged due to heavy rainfall in various parts of the state.Guwahati too faced water-logging in several areas following heavy rainfall.Due to heavy rainfall, the situation is quite similar in other states too.In Chhattisgarh, heavy rainfall led to students in Koriya district to skip classes due to unavailability of a bridge across the river.Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh, heavy rainfall has killed around 70 people. Kerala: Orange alert issued as Idukki dam water level increases

The Kerala authorities have issued an orange alert after the water level in the Idukki dam touched 2,395 feet on Monday."The water level in Idukki reservoir has reached 2395 ft. An Orange alert has been issued as a result. It must be noted that an Orange alert is not an indication for the opening of dam shutters. Public will be informed well in advance before any such event," read a post on the official Twitter handle of CMO Kerala."It must also be noted that the shutters of the dam will be opened only during daytime, and not in the night. Small plane crash near rural Maine airport leaves 3 dead

Police and federal authorities were investigating the crash of a small plane in rural Maine that killed three people today after the aircraft departed from Canada. The twin-engine plane was travelling from Pembroke, Ontario, to Prince Edward Island in Canada. The plane crashed on approach to Greenville Municipal Airport at about 11 am, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said. A cause for the crash was not immediately determined and was under investigation. Police did not immediately release the names of those killed in the crash. The FAA was sending an investigator to the scene, they said. The FAA said there were three people on board the plane. Traffic affected on NH 33 as bus catches fire after being hit by truck: Police

The movement of vehicles on National Highway 33, near the Chutupalu valley in Ramgarh district, was restricted after a bus caught fire under the impact of a collision with a speeding truck this evening, police said. The incident occurred when the truck rammed into the bus from behind, the police said, adding that the bus overturned and caught fire under the impact of the collision. Orange alert issued as Idukki dam nears full level

: With the water level in the Idukki reservoir touching 2,395 feet tonight, just nine feet short of the full level, an orange alert was issued by the authorities. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) said an orange alert does not mean that shutter operations would be done anytime now. The shutters would be opened only in daylight and after sufficient notice is given to the public and all stakeholders concerned, it said in a statement. There was no need for the public to panic, KSDMA said. The final red alert would be issued when the water level touches 2,399 feet, it said. The full level of the dam is 2,404 feet. The water level is related to the Mean Sea Level and catchment area. Earlier, the Kerala government put the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard on alert to meet any eventuality in case water is released. 10 killed, 7 injured in rain related incidents in UP; schools to remain shut in Lucknow tmrw

Ten persons were killed and seven others injured in rain related incidents in different parts of Uttar Pradesh during the last 24 hours, a senior official said here today. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed senior officials of all the districts to undertake extensive tours in the affected areas and identify dilapidated buildings and get them vacated, a government spokesperson said here. "Ten persons were killed and seven injured in different parts of UP since yesterday. The toll since last week in such incidents has reached 80, while total injured are 84 till 11.30 am today," Relief Commissioner Sanjay Prasad said. Two labourer killed in JK's Reasi district

Two labourers were today killed when a portion of earth caved in during construction of a road in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. A group of labourers were busy in road construction work at Lar village of Gulabgarh when suddenly the earth caved in this evening, trapping two labourers, a police official said. He said rescuers immediately swung into action and after hectic efforts recovered body of one of the labourer, while another was rescued in an injured condition. The injured labourer succumbed to his injuries while being shifted to a hospital, the official said. The deceased were identified as Abdul Rashid Sheikh (37) and Mushtaq Ahmad (19), both residents of Shadole of Reasi.

Groups of hikers began to pick their way down the slopes of a Lombok volcano today after a deadly earthquake triggered landslides that trapped more than 500 tourists and guides on the mountain. Japan airport runway closed as plane enters wrong taxiway

Narita airport, Japan's main international gateway, was forced to shut one of its two runways today when a plane entered the wrong taxiway after landing, local media reported. The Boeing 787 Air Canada flight from Montreal, carrying about 210 passengers and crew, was stranded for hours on the taxiway under construction alongside the runway, public broadcaster NHK said. Two persons drown in Nagaland
