UP: 70 people killed in rain-related incidents

At least 70 people have been killed and 77 injured in the last three days as rain caused havoc in various parts of Uttar Pradesh.Meanwhile, the MeT Department has warned of heavy rains and thundershowers in various parts of the state."Sonebhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Ballia, Maunath Bhanjan, Azamgarh, Deoria districts will continue to receive heavy rains and thundershowers," MeT statement reported.Maximum number of people (11) died in Saharanpur, followed by Meerut, Agra, Muzaffarnagar Kasganj and Manipuri.It has been reported that as many as 408 houses and huts were damaged in the rain.Death of 33 cattle has also been reported.Earlier today, a woman and her son were killed after a roof of their house collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar.In the wake of incessant pouring causing havoc in the state, the state government has directed officials to provide relief in the affected areas.

Raigad accident: BJP offers jobs, Sena announces compensation

The Maharashtra government on Sunday announced that it will provide jobs to one dependent from each victim's family killed in a bus accident that took place at Raigad district and claimed 30 lives.Meanwhile, the Shiv Sena also announced compensation of Rs. 1 lakh to each victim's family killed in the incident.On Saturday, the bus was carrying 31 passengers when it fell into a 500-feet deep gorge in Ambenali Ghat in Maharashtra's Raigad district. Only one of the passengers survived the accident.Raigad guardian minister Ravindra Chavan had said that bus fell down into the gorge due to the driver's fault.On Sunday, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) called off the rescue operation in Ambenali Ghat after recovering all 30 bodies from the site of the accident.

Old Yamuna Bridge closed to traffic as water level rises, govt sets up control room

Traffic movement on Old Yamuna Bridge in Delhi was closed this evening with the water level in the river rising due to rains, a day after the flow breached the danger mark, officials said. The city government set up a flood control room and a round-the-clock emergency operation centre to monitor the river situation, they said. An order banning movement of traffic on the bridge was issued by the disaster management authorities after the flow in the Yamuna showed a rising trend. The river was flowing at 205.5 metres this evening with the danger mark being 204.83 metres, the officials said. Old Yamuna Bridge, colloquially known as 'Lohe Ka Pul', is a road-cum-rail bridge on the Delhi-Howrah line that was built over 150 years ago. It serves as a major connectivity link between Delhi and the neighbouring states. Himachal gets relief from heavy rains

Himachal Pradesh got some relief from heavy rains as monsoon remained less active today. According to the Met Department, monsoon will continue to remain less active in the state in the coming two-three days. "The prevailing fairly widespread to widespread rainfall activities over the state are likely to reduce significantly from today onwards, as the low pressure area over northwest Uttar Pradesh and its adjoining states have become less marked. No moisture incursion is likely from Bay of Bengal and Arabian sea over the region during next two-three days," said Manmohan Singh, the director at the local Met centre. No rain occurred in most parts of the state from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm today, he added. 12 killed in rain-related incidents in UP; Yamuna flows above danger mark in Delhi

Torrential rains continued to batter parts of north India today, with worst-hit Uttar Pradesh recording 12 rain-related deaths and waters of the Yamuna flowing above the danger mark in the national capital. Seventy people have died and 77 suffered injuries in rain-related incidents in UP since Thursday, officials said today. The maximum of 11 deaths were reported from Saharanpur. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials of all districts to alert people and asked them to undertake extensive tours in the affected areas and identify dilapidated buildings and get them vacated, a government spokesperson said here. Egypt railway head sacked after string of train crashes

The head of Egypt's railway authority has been removed from office following a series of train accidents, the transport ministry said today. The statement announcing Sayed Salem's sacking came just hours after a train came off the rails on the Cairo-Aswan line, injuring a number of passengers and delaying trips. Transport Minister Hisham Arafat appointed Ashran Mohammed Raslan as the new head of Egypt's National Railway Authority, the ministry said in a statement posted on Facebook. Kinner Kailash yatra suspended due to heavy rains

The Kinner Kailash pilgrimage has been suspended till furthers orders due to heavy rains and flash floods in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, an official said today. The move came a day after two pilgrims were swept away by flash floods in Kangrang Nullah. A large number of devotees are stranded on the way to the Kinnaur Kailash mountain, the official said. "The yatra has been suspended till further orders due to heavy rainfall and flash floods," Officiating Deputy Commissioner, Kinnaur, Avninder Kumar said. The Himachal Pradesh Police and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police have rescued 276 pilgrims, who were stranded on the way to the Kinnaur Kailash mountain, he said.

3 die, 72 fell sick due to contaminated water in Rajasthan

Three people have died and 72 fallen sick in the last three days allegedly after consuming contaminated water in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh district, police said today. As many as 75 people complained of abdominal pain and vomiting yesterday and three of them died today. The deceased were identified as Onkar Rawat (60), Ragini (nine-month-old) and Gendi Bai (70), they said. Block Chief Medical and Health Officers Gyanmal Sankhla said, "68 people have been discharged after primary treatment and four are still hospitalised." Myanmar floods kill at least 10, force 54,000 people from homes

Surging floodwaters have killed at least 10 people and forced tens of thousands from their homes across swathes of Myanmar, a government official said today as more heavy monsoon rain battered the region. Vast areas of farmland have been submerged by muddy water stretching to the horizon, with only the rooftops of some houses visible. Some stranded people were plucked from the churning waters by rescuers in boats, while volunteers used rafts made from barrels and pieces of wood. Over 1 lakh people died in last 64 yrs due to floods

Nearly one lakh people died while property worth over eight crore was damaged in flood-related incidents in the last 64 years, according to government data. According to the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, in this duration, there was loss of Rs 2,02,474 crore to public property and crops worth Rs 1,09,202 crore on 25.6 crore hectare land were damaged. As per the data, 1,654 people and 92,763 animals were killed due to floods on an average every year in the last 64 years. On an average 71.69 lakh hectare land was affected, crops worth Rs 1,680 crore and 12.40 lakh houses were damaged. Between 1953 and 2017, 205.8 crore people were affected on 46.60 crore hectare land in different states and union territories in the country. Bus carrying Chinese tourists crashes in Turkey, 2 dead

Turkish media report that a bus full of Chinese tourists has collided with two automobiles in southern Turkey, killing two Turkish citizens and leaving 30 people injured. The state-run Anadolu Agency says the accident occurred today morning on the outskirts of Akseki, a town in the southern province of Antalya. The Demiroren news agency says the bus, carrying 31 Chinese tourists plus a driver and his co-pilot, was on its way to Cappadocia. It says 30 people have been injured, one critically. Egypt: Passenger train derails near city of Aswan; 6 hurt

Egyptian authorities said a passenger train derailed near the southern city of Aswan and that at least six people were injured. The Transportation Ministry said the accident took place today when eight of the train's carriages derailed near the Salwa station in Kom Ombo, north of Aswan. It was not immediately clear what caused the derailment. Khaled Megahed, the spokesperson for the Health Ministry, said the injured were taken to hospital for treatment. The accident comes two weeks after another passenger train derailed in Cairo's twin city of Giza, in which at least 55 people were injured. Egypt's railway system has a poor safety record, mostly blamed on decades of badly maintained equipment and poor management. Official figures show that 1,793 train accidents took place in 2017.
