Greek wildfire death toll climbs to 60: Officials

The death toll from the wildfire ravaging the seaside areas around Athens has increased to 60 in Greece's deadliest blaze in more than a decade, a local official told AFP. "We have counted 60 dead," Myron Tsagarakis, a local official in Rafina, the largest town in the area most affected by the fires, told AFP, confirming earlier reports by local media.

Six commuters killed at Chennai suburban train station after

Six passengers travelling on the footboard of crowded suburban trains during rush hour died after crashing into a concrete track fence at St Thomas Mount railway station here in two accidents in little over 13 hours, police said today. Those dead included three students aged between 16 and 25 years. Six people were also injured. The first mishap took place around 7 p.m. yesterday when two commuters of Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu train hit against the wall and fell to their death. A little over 13 hours later at 8.30 a.m, 10 people perched precariously on the footboard of another suburban train hit the wall, about 50 metres from the scene of the first tragedy, and fell in a heap on the rugged surface. Four of them died, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said. Medical teams including vascular surgeons were treating those injured at government hospitals. CIL has taken various measures to improve coal supply: Jha

Coal India Limited chairman, Anil Kumar Jha today said CIL was taking various measures to improve coal supply to power and steel sector. Effective measures are being taken to ensure supply of sufficient quantity of coal to meet the requirement of power and steel sector, so that they do not suffer any loss of production due to coal shortage, he told reporters at Rajarappa in Ramgarh district. "We have effective and better plan to increase coal production as well as coal supply with new coal projects in view of rising demand of coal," the CIL chairman said. Jha said that future of CIL is bright as government has taken various initiatives to increase coal output as well as supply of coal to meet requirement of coal in various industries in India.

Embankment, riverbanks repaired to cope with flood-like

The West Bengal irrigation department has completed repairing around 1411 river embankments, riverbanks and different structures damaged during last year's heavy rainfall to cope with any flood-like situation in the state, Irrigation Minister Soumen Kumar Mahapatra told the Assembly today. Starting on June 1 the state irrigation department has opened two separate flood control rooms in Kolkata and Jalpaiguri and 22 other centres in the districts to keep an eye on the water-level of various river bodies, total rainfall and condition of the drainage canals, Mahapatra said. The department has also carried out repair works of 11 water pumping stations in and surrounding areas of the city besides, setting up 40 new pumping stations in the low lying areas in the state, Mahapatra said. The minister said that around 940 km of drainage canals in the city and at around five districts North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Medinipore have been brought under the annual .

No more fear of flood in Mahanadi, Baitarani river systems

There is no more fear of flood in the Mahanadi and Baitarani river systems in Odisha due to the fall in the water level of the rivers and the authorities of Hirakud Dam released the season's first flood water today, official sources said. Special Relief Commissioner(SRC) B P Sethi said the flood fear has receded in the two river systems as the water level has substantially reduced at Mundali and Akhuapada gauge stations since yesterday. "The volume of water discharged from Mundali gauge station has come down to 4,47,609 cusec per second at 9 am today from 7,30,877 cusec last night. This apart, there was no rainfall during the past 24 hours across the state," he told reporters. The state has escaped a low to medium flood in the Mahanadi and Baitarani river systems, he said. "The water level at Akhuapada barrage of Baitarani river has also been reduced. Keeping this in view, we dont foresee a flood in the state as of now," Sethi said. Four killed as car falls into ravine

A car fell into a deep ravine in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province today, killing at least four persons and injuring three others including an independent candidate contesting in tomorrow's polls. The accident occurred in Seran Valley of Mansehra district. Waqar-ul-Mulk, who is contesting the Punjab assembly polls as an independent candidate, was injured in the accident. After the incident, rescue teams reached the scene and moved the injured to a nearby hospital for medical assistance, the police said.

Heat wave claimed 3,500 lives in 3 years: Govt

Over 3,500 people died due to heat wave in the country in the last three years, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju told the Lok Sabha today. Rijiju said 2,040 people died due to heat wave in 2015, as many as 1,114 in 2016 and 384 in 2017. Of the total casualties due to heat wave, the highest, 2,381 people, died in Andhra Pradesh in the last three years, he said is a written reply. The Minister of State for Home said in 2018, so far, 22 people have lost their lives due to heat wave.

Hundreds missing in Laos after dam collapse: State news agency

Hundreds of people are missing and an unknown number believed dead after the collapse of a hydropower dam in southeast Laos, state media reported today. The accident happened at a dam in southeastern Attapeu province late yesterday, releasing five billion cubic metres of water with "several human lives claimed, and several hundreds of people missing," Laos News Agency said. The dam is being built by Xe Pien-Xe Namnoy Power Company, or PNPC.

Bogie of goods train derails in Amethi; rail traffic hit

One bogie of a goods train derailed near the Akbarganj railway station in Amethi late last night, affecting rail traffic, an official said. "The goods train was on its way to Lucknow when one of its bogies derailed late last night, hitting rail traffic. However, there was no reports of any casualty or injury," ADRM, Northern Railway, A K Srivastava said. A team of railway officials and workers reached the spot and efforts were on to remove the bogie and restore the traffic, he added.

Boat tragedy: Body of stringer of Malayalam news channel found

The body of a stringer of a Malayalam news channel, who had gone missing following a country boat tragedy in a canal near Vaikom, was found today, police said. Body of Saji, stringer of Mathrubhumi news channel, was found soon after the diving teams of fireforce and Navy resumed search operation this morning, they said. His body will be handed over to his relatives after autopsy at the Government Medical College hospital, Kottayam, they added.
