Police in Moscow say at least seven people have been injured when a taxi crashed into pedestrians on a sidewalk near Red Square. Police say the driver in the crash Saturday has been detained. Preliminary information indicated the driver lost control of the vehicle. There were no immediate details on the severity of the pedestrians' injuries. Police initially said eight were injured, but later said seven had sought medical attention. The agency that monitors Moscow's traffic safety said the driver is a citizen of the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan who told police that the crash was not intentional. The accident took place on Ilinka Street, about 200 meters (650 feet) from Red Square and Moscow's famous GUM shopping arcade. Russia is currently hosting the World Cup and Moscow is one of 11 Russian cities where tournament games are being played.

The death toll in the landslide at Kerala's Kattipara village in Kozhikode district has risen to 12.Search and rescue operations are still on for two more people who are yet to be traced.Landslides have also been reported in Karinchola, Pulluranpara and Chamal areas of the district.In lieu of excessive flooding, nearly a thousand people have been moved to relief camps.A lot of damage has been caused in Kerala with the onset of the monsoon.Last week, 13 people were killed last week after rains lashed several parts of the state.Rains have also caused damage to crops in Idukki and Kozhikode.
With the recovery of bodies of four more victims of a landslide, the toll rose to 53 today in rain related incidents in Kerala since the onset of the South West monsoon late last month. The bodies -- including that of two children -- were recovered from under the rubble at Kattipara in Kozhikode district, two days after the landslide occurred, official sources said. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today asked officials to speed up relief and restoration works on war footing in view of the grim flood situation in the state, official sources said. Bolivian police say 17 people have died in a bus accident in the southern province of Potosi. Potosi police chief Vladimir Lazo said today that another 30 people were injured after the bus they were traveling in collided with a rock. He said high speed was likely the cause, and the driver was killed. The bus was traveling from the central city of Cochabamba to the province capital of Potosi when the crash occurred about 40 kilometres from the latter city. Congress's Amritsar MP G S Aujla has claimed that he had to pull the emergency chain of a train to get its tanks filled after passengers complained to him that they were unable to use toilets due to lack of water. Aujla, along with some senior Railways officials, conducted a surprise inspection of a number of trains, including the Shatabdi Express, at the station here. He claimed he had to pull the emergency chain of the Tata Muri Express to get its water tanks filled as passengers weren't able to use toilets and wash basins. Aujla said he instructed the train staff to fill the tanks, "but the loco pilot didn't pay any heed to the operation. So, I pulled the chain to stop it from leaving the platform". A Jabalpur-bound aircraft of a private airline with 48 passengers on-board made an unscheduled landing at the Raja Bhoj Airport here today due to a technical glitch, an official said. The flight from Delhi, operated by newly launched Zoom Air, landed at around 10.30 am after it developed some technical problem, Raja Bhoj Airport Director Anil Vikram said. There were 48 passengers on board the plane, a CRJ series jet, and all were safe, he said. "It was not an emergency landing. The aircraft landed due to a technical problem," he said. Another Zoom Air plane landed here to take the passengers to Jabalpur, around 370km from Bhopal, Vikram added.
Stringent action will be taken against those found polluting rivers and canals in Punjab, state Water Resources Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria said. The minister directed the department officials to monitor the situation and check the river water pollution. "In certain parts of the state, the ground water was not fit for human consumption and in such a situation the residents had to use river and canal waters for their daily needs," an official release quoting him said. Nobody can be allowed to pollute rivers and canals, he said. "Throwing waste and untreated water into the rivers is not acceptable. Because of this human-made water pollution, a number of people were suffering from hepatitis B and other contaminated water-borne diseases," he said. The minister also urged people to join hands with the state government to make rivers pollution free.
Two members of a family were among three killed in an accident which occurred after their car hit a divider on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway, police said today. The deceased were identified as Nirupama (45), her son Anmol (11), and the car driver, Rajendra Yadav (35). According to Superintendent of Police Harish Kumar, "The accident occurred in Auras police station area on the bridge over Sai river late last night. The passengers were returning from Jaipur after purchasing an idol. Three people died while as many were injured." Meanwhile, a car which had stopped to see the accident site was hit by a bus, injuring all six passengers travelling in it, the SP said. All the injured people have been hospitalised in Lucknow, they said.
