Andhra: Boat capsizes in Godavari river, 23 missing

A boat carrying around 40 people on Tuesday capsized in Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh.So far, 17 people have been rescued while 23 people are still missing.Special Branch DSP Vijaybhaskar Reddy told ANI, "Boat started from Devipatnam to reach Kondamodalu at 3.30 pm. Driver Khaza Mohiddeen was trying to reach banks at Vadapalli to deport two passengers. When the boat is almost 10 minutes away to the banks, heavy rain and wind occurred, boat lost balance and slid one side."According to Reddy, the driver of the boat has said there are 25-26 passengers in the boat at the time of incident .Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N Chinarajappa has inquired about the incident and instructed the concerned officials for search operations.The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams from Kakinada and Visakhapatnam have been deployed for rescue operations.More details ..

Varanasi flyover collapse: Rajnath takes stock of situation

Home Minister Rajnath Singh took stock of the situation in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district where at least 18 people were killed when an under-construction bridge collapsed this afternoon. Singh also expressed deep anguish over the tragedy. "HM also spoke to the district magistrate of Varanasi who has apprised him of the incident. The @NDRFHQ teams have been rushed to the spot for rescue operations," the home minister's office tweeted. Singh also conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. Seven teams of the NDRF, each comprising 45 personnel, have rushed to the spot for rescue operation.

A portion of an under-construction flyover near the railway station here collapsed today killing at least 18 persons while more were feared trapped under the debris, officials said. Eighteen bodies have been recovered from the Varanasi flyover collapse site, UP Relief Commissioner Sanjay Kumar told PTI in Lucknow. "It is feared that several people are buried under the rubble," an official said, adding rescue teams were at spot to rescue those trapped. Some vehicles, including a bus, were crushed in the collapse, they said. At least three persons had been rescued, a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) official said. The Uttar Pradesh Bridge Construction Corporation was constructing the 2261-metre-long bridge at a cost of Rs 129 crore, officials said. Several feared drowned as boat capsizes in AP

Several persons were feared drowned when a boat capsized in river Godavari in East Godavari district today. National Disaster Response Force personnel have been pressed into service to trace the missing persons, official sources here said. The number of passengers in the boat at the time of the accident was also not clear even as reports said at least 10 persons swam to safety. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa spoke to East Godavari district officials over phone and enquired about the incident. The Chief Minister directed the District Collector to deploy special teams to rescue the victims, a release here said. Strong wind was said to have caused the mishap, an official said over phone from Rajamahendravaram. The ill-fated boat was on its way to Rajamahendravaram from Kondamodalu when tragedy struck.
