Authorities in Tamil Nadu were engaged in a massive operation on Sunday to rescue some students caught in a forest fire in Theni district, with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman saying the IAF has also been pressed into service.
Eight persons, including three women, were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision between an autorickshaw and a truck in Bihar's Samastipur district today, the police said. The accident occurred when the autorickshaw overtook a car and came in front of the speeding truck coming from the opposite direction near Harpur Alauth village, Musrigharari police station SHO Kamal Ram said. All the victims were occupants of the autorickshaw. Of the four injured, who had been admitted to a private clinic in Musrigharari, the condition of two was serious and were referred to a Samastipur hospital, Ram said. Police seized the truck while its driver and cleaner fled, the SHO said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to each of the deceased. Kumar also directed the officials concerned to ensure better treatment of the injured persons, an official release said.
A massive fire broke out at a plastic godown in Kolkata's Dhapa area on Sunday afternoon.At least 10 tankers were deployed to douse the flames, a fire brigade official said."There is no casualty," he revealed.The official added, "Main challenge was to stop the fire from spreading as a slum is just adjacent to the place of incident, we were successful in doing the same.
A liquor shop and a load carrier were allegedly set ablaze by protesters in separate incidents in R S Pura and Samba areas of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said today. However, no one was injured, he said. A wine shop was torched in Badyal village of R S Pura, on the outskirts of Jammu city, this morning, he said, adding that villagers had been demanding over the past couple of days that the shop be shifted, he added. The official said an FIR was registered in this connection. A load carrier transporting buffaloes was set on fire in Bishnah area of Samba district late last night, he said. The driver deserted the vehicle and fled from the scene after seeing a mob signalling him to stop the vehicle, the official said. The people later freed the buffaloes and set the vehicle on fire. A case was registered and further investigation was on, he said.
A number of crackers caught fire during testing near a cracker manufacturing unit at Changripota under Mahestala police station area in South 24 Parganas district today, the police said. No casualty was reported. The workers were testing a cracker near the unit and sparks from it fell on other crackers kept nearby causing the fire. The workers used the water of nearby canal to put out the fire, the police said. A fire tender had also gone there but by that time, the blaze was extinguished.
Two men were killed and three women injured when their car crashed into a traffic signal pole in northwest Mukherjee Nagar, police said today. The accident occurred at around 2.45 am on the intervening night of March 10 and 11 when the driver of the car lost control over his vehicle and ended up hitting the central verge at T-Point, Hudson Lines, they said. The deceased have been identified as Ritesh Dahiya and Siddharth, both in their 20s. Three women occupants of the car, including the driver, sustained injuries, police said. The driver was under the influence of alcohol, said Aslam Khan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest). Police said the woman driver was arrested after being discharged from the hospital.

At least 16 people were killed and dozens more injured after lightning struck a Seventh-Day Adventist church in Rwanda, a local official said today. Fourteen victims were killed on the spot as lightning hit the church in the Nyaruguru district in the Southern Province on Saturday, local mayor Habitegeko Francois told AFP over the phone. Two others died later from their injuries, he said. He added that 140 people involved in the incident had been rushed to hospital and district health centres, but that many had already been discharged. "Doctors say that only three of them are in critical condition but they are getting better," he said. According to the mayor, a similar accident took place on Friday when lightning struck a group of 18 students, killing one of them.

Two persons were killed when their motorcycle rammed into a stationary tractor this morning, police said. According to Additional Superintendent of Police Kamal Kishore, the accident took place at village Sirauli where Pravesh Kumar (25) and Jitendra (23) lost their lives. The intensity of the collision was such that both riders died on the spot, he said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, he added.
