An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 on the Richter scale was registered in parts of Gujarat's Kutch district today, an official said. "An earthquake measuring 4.2 on Richter scale was recorded in Kutch distirct with its epicentre being 15 km from Bhachau," said an official of Gandhinagar-based Institute of Seismological Research (ISR). The ISR official said that the earthquake was recorded at around 5:14 pm and its epicentre was 15 km north-north east (NNE) of Bhachau town. No casualty or damage to property was reported, the official added.
An Indian Coast Guard helicopter, on a routine patrol with four crew members on board, made an emergency landing near Nandgaon beach in Raigad district of Maharashtra this afternoon, injuring a woman co-pilot, an ICG official said. The Navy had earlier said that the helicopter had "crash landed". The ICG official said that according to the preliminary reports, the helicopter suffered technical difficulties for around 25 minutes after it took off from the Coast Guard base in Mumbai. An Indian Coast Guard helicopter on a routine patrol crash landed in Raigad district of Maharashtra this afternoon, injuring a woman pilot, the Navy said. All the four crew members of the Coast Guard in the chopper were rescued from the scene of the accident by the Navy and flown to naval hospital 'Asvini' at Mumbai, a Navy officer said, without elaborating. The flash flood in Upper Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh has damaged the Angong Nallah small hydro project at Janbo village, an official report has said. The flash flood damaged the intake and pen stock pipelines of the project and the mud carried by the flash flood submerged the power house, executive engineer of Geku power division Ojing Nobeng said in a report. The impact of the flood was so severe that check bunds or stop points made in the channel at many points were totally washed away, the report said. The project was on the verge of being commissioned and trial and testing was supposed to begin from March 15, Nobeng informed adding restoration works are under way. A fire officer has been booked for allegedly refusing to send fire engines after getting a call about a blaze in a chemicals factory, police said today. A major fire broke out after an explosion inside a boiler of a chemicals factory in the district on Thursday night, in which three people were killed and 15 others injured. "We have booked the fire officer S S Borkar of Tarapore fire station following a complaint by District Collector Prashant Narnawre," said in-charge Inspector Prakash Birajdar of Boisar police station. Birajdar said the officer did not send fire engines to the spot even after requests were made by the police control room. According to Birajdar, the fire officer reportedly told police and officials of the Disaster Control Cell that he cannot send fire engines without permission of his seniors. Meanwhile, Palghar Guardian Minister Vishnu Sawra has ordered an inqury into the incident and assured that the guilty will be punished.

The first Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise of the Indian Air Force in association with South Asian Region nations will be held off the coast of Kerala from March 12 to 17. The multilateral exercise named 'Samvedna' is the first composite HADR exercise in the South Asian Region and would involve representatives from air forces of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and the UAE, a defence release said here today. The objective of the exercise is to galvanise all stakeholders in synergising a unified HADR efforts, it said. The entire settings of the exercise is based on a scenario of a tsunami in the western coast of India originating from an earthquake in Makran subduction zone and resulting in post-tsunami disaster management along the western coast and western islands of India. Two persons were killed when their motorcycle caught fire after colliding with a tractor-trolley on the Lucknow-Delhi national highway here, the police said today. Arun (20) and Jitesh (45) were returning from Bareilly last night when their motorcycle caught fire after colliding with the tractor-trolley under Faridpur police station area, they said, adding the driver of the tractor-trolley sped away after the incident. Following the incident, locals rushed to douse the flames. Arun died on the spot while Jitesh was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the police said. The military has been deployed in northern Albania to help hundreds of people trapped by floods following heavy rainfall, authorities said today. More than 9,230 hectares of agricultural land is underwater in the Shkodra region, including villages where the only means of transport is by boat, the defence ministry said. Army personnel are evacuating residents and securing food supplies in the affected areas, 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of the capital, Tirana. The torrential rain in recent days has caused landslides damaging dozens of homes and flooding roads, said the transport ministry. The rain has also forced the Albanian authorities to release excess water from a hydroelectric plant, which has added to the flooding in northern areas of the country. The Minister of State for Civil Aviation remained evasive on whether there are any plans to ground these planes that are powered by P&W engines.
