Metro fares still highly subsidized post increase, says Goyal

Addressing the issue of increasing metro fares, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said the fare is still nominal even after it being increased last year."Metro fares in India are highly subsidized and none of the metros in the country are making money. Avalanche warning for some districts in J-K, HP, Uttarakhand

An avalanche warning was issued today for some avalanche-prone districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Chandigarh-based Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) issued the warning valid for the next 24 hours starting at 5:00 pm today. A SASE advisory said a high danger avalanche warning was issued for avalanche-prone areas in Baramulla and Kupwara districts of Jammu and Kashmir while a medium danger avalanche warning was issued for Ganderbal, Bandipora and Kargil districts of the state. A low danger avalanche warning was issued for Anantnag, Ramban and Leh districts of the state. A medium danger avalanche warning for the same period was issued for avalanche-prone areas of Lahaul and Spiti, Kullu and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh, and low danger warning was issued for Kinnaur district of the state, the advisory said. S Africa declares drought a 'national disaster': statement

South Africa today declared a "national disaster" over a drought that has ravaged parts of the country and threatened to leave the city of Cape Town without domestic tap water. Alert gangman prevents Railway accident

The Assam bound New Delhi-Guwahati Rajdhani Express today escaped an accident timely in Bihar's Khagaria district when a gangman spotted a crack in track and alerted the driver to stop the train. The Express was supposed to pass through Chaidhabanni halt, where fracture in the track was located, between Mansi and Maheshkhunt stations on Barauni-Katihar rail section of Sonepur division of East Central Railway (ECR) zone. ECR Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) Rajesh Kumar told PTI that Railway gangman, while patrolling the section between Mansi-Maheskhunt, saw the fracture in the track and placed a detonator before running with banner flag to stop the incoming train. The loco pilot of 12424 Guwahati Rajdhani Express upon seeing the red banner flag stopped the train much before the point at which fracture was detected, he said. Coast Guard apprehends seven Pak fishermen off Guj coast

The Indian Coast Guard today apprehended seven Pakistani fishermen and seized their boat for venturing into Indian waters off Gujarat coast. "The fishing boat, 'Al-Hilal', was detected inside Indian waters around 16 nautical miles off the coast of Jakhau in Kutch region by the Indian Coast Guard Ship 'MeeraBen'," a defence statement said. The boat, with seven crew members on board, was eventually intercepted and brought ashore for investigation along with the seven crew members, it said. In December last year, six Pak fishermen were nabbed by the Coast Guard for catching the fish inside Indian waters after crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Earlier in November, as many as 15 Pakistani fishermen on two boats were apprehended by the Coast Guard for venturing into Indian waters off Gujarat coast.

Woman killed by lightning in JK's Rajouri

A woman was killed when she was struck by lightning in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. Parveen Akhtar (35) was inside her house in Kandi village when she was struck by the lightning last night, a police official said. Her death raised the number of people killed in lightning incidents in this region to three since yesterday. A father-son duo was killed when lightning struck their house at Launcha village of Mahore in Reasi district yesterday. They were identified as Ali Mohammad (30) and his son Shabir (3).

UP: 3 killed, 2 injured after car rams into bridge on Agra- Lucknow Expressway

At least three people of a family were killed and two others injured after a vehicle rammed into a bridge on Agra- Lucknow Expressway, near Talgram area of Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district.A couple and their daughter died on the spot, while the injured have been taken to nearby hospital for immediate treatment. 5 killed in blast on ship under repair at Cochin Shipyard

Five people were killed in a fire following an explosion on an ONGC vessel under repair at the Cochin Shipyard Limited premises today, a CSL official said. The deceased were believed to be contract workers, he said. Three injured people have been admitted to a private hospital here, he said, adding that the condition of one of them, who suffered 40 per cent burns, is stated to be critical. The CSL spokesperson earlier today said 11 people trapped inside the ship were evacuated andrushed to city hospitals. City Police Commissioner M P Dinesh visited the accident site and said those trapped on the ship were evacuated and the situation was under control now. The blast reportedly occurred in a water tank on the front side of the ship docked in the yard for repair. The incident occurred at around 10 AM when those on the vessel were about to deboard it for breakfast break. Police said smoke inhalation is suspected to be the reason for the casualties. Gadkari orders probe into Cochin Shipyard incident killing 5

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari today ordered an immediate enquiry to ascertain the reasons behind a blast on an under repair ship at Cochin Shipyard (CSL) that killed five people. "I have spoken to MD, CSL and asked him to provide all necessary medical support to victims and to initiate immediate enquiry with the help of concerned agencies," Gadkari said. According to a shipping ministry official, at least five people have been killed in the blast. Earlier, a CSL spokesperson said a fire had broken out on a ship under repair in the premises, killing three people. Eleven persons trapped inside the ship were evacuated and rushed to hospital, the spokesperson said.

A fire broke out on a ship under repair at the Cochin Shipyard Limited premises, killing three people, a CSL spokesperson said. Four dead as storm hits southern Philippines

Four people were killed in the southern Philippines today as a tropical storm unleashed heavy rain and triggered deadly landslides, police said. Tropical Storm Sanba slammed the east coast of the main southern island of Mindanao Tuesday with gusts of 75 kilometres an hour. The heavy rain triggered landslides that hit mountain villages outside the mining town of Carrascal -- 760 kilometres south of the capital Manila -- killing four people, municipal police chief James Alendogao told AFP. "These areas are currently inaccessible and we do not know the extent of the damage," he added. The state weather service said the storm was expected to move swiftly northwest over the next 24 hours, bringing moderate to heavy rain across the central Philippines.
