4.7 earthquake jolts S Korea
An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter Scale struck South Korea's Daegu city on Sunday morning.According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck about seven km northwest of Hoko. The quake hit at a depth of around 10 km.However, no casualties or loss of properties has been reported so far.This comes after last week's Taiwan earthquake which reportedly claimed 14 lives and wounded over 260.Taiwan is located in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, which is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The house of former MLA of Rongjeng, Desang Sangma, in East Garo Hills was completely gutted in a fire today, police said. The incident took place at about 6:15 pm, they said. Superintendent of police of EGH, Ringrang TG Momin. said preliminary investigation reveals that the fire could be due to the short circuit in the house. By the time the Fire and Emergency Services got to the place, most of the damage had already been done and the fire had burnt out its normal course, he said.

The crash happened when the bus, which had at least 40 people on board, hit a motorbike while heading down a hill at speed in the Subang region of West Java province, causing it to roll over multiple times. Most of the passengers, who were on their way to a hot spring, were from South Tangerang in Java's Banten province. Police are investigating the cause of the collision but said they suspect the vehicle's brakes failed to work. All victims have been evacuated from the bus and most have been taken to a local hospital, officers said. "Our morgue is now at full capacity, we cannot accept more bodies," Subang hospital spokesman Mamat Dudirakhmat told local broadcaster Metro TV. Five people lost their lives and two were injured when a car collided with a bus near Adampur in Jalandhar district today, the police said. The incident took place when the SUV was going to Jalandhar and the bus, belonging to a private university, was going to Hoshiarpur, DSP (Rural), Jalandhar Gurwinder Singh said. "Five people, who were the occupants of the SUV, died while two others, including the bus driver, were injured in the incident," he said, adding the deceased were residents of Jalandhar.

In a letter to all employees, Lohani said that there was a need to ensure that railways maintains the motto of "safety first" in all its activities. He said this can be done by encouraging all employees to report hazardous practices. "To encourage railway employees to voluntarily disclose unsafe practices in the train operations so that corrective measures can be initiated much before occurrence of a disaster or become unmanageable. 2 killed in road accident in Rajasthan
Two people were killed and seven severely injured today after a private bus overturned when its driver tried to avoid ramming into a camel carcass lying on a highway in Rajsamand district, police said. The accident occurred when the bus carrying over 30 passengers was on its way from Gujarat's Surat to Asind in Rajasthan, they said. The bus driver, in an attempt to avoid hitting a camel carcass which was lying on the highway, lost control and the vehicle overturned, they added. The injured were rushed to the hospital where two passengers were declared brought dead, they said. Seven people were severely injured, they added.
Taiwan quake toll rises to 15 as bodies pulled from rubble
The toll from a deadly 6.4-magnitude quake in Taiwan rose to 15 today as rescuers searching for a missing family of Chinese tourists discovered three more bodies in a partially toppled building. Scores of emergency workers combed the rubble at the foot of the 12-storey Yun Tsui apartment block that was left leaning at around a 50-degree angle by the quake, complicating rescue efforts due to fears of an imminent collapse. The three bodies and the last missing pair are believed to be members of a family from Beijing who arrived in Taiwan on Monday, authorities said. They were staying in a second-floor room at a hotel in the building in the eastern city of Hualien when the quake hit the following night. 8-yr-old killed as bus, dumper collide head-on in Rajasthan
An eight-year-old girl was killed and six others injured when a school bus collided head-on with a dumper in Rajasthan's Banswara district today, police said. The collision took place between the bus and the dumper laden with heavy stones on the Udaipur-Banswara state highway, they added. The dumper overturned and the driver and his helper fled fled from the spot, police said. The deceased was identified as Pratigya. The injured were referred to Udaipur after primary treatment at a local hospital in Banswara, they said. Meanwhile, angry villagers blocked the highway claiming accidents were commonplace, officials said.
At least 19 killed as bus topples over in Hong Kong
At least 19 people were killed and dozens injured when a double-decker bus toppled over in Hong Kong today evening, police said. Photographs on local media websites showed the bus lying on its side with its roof torn off by a road near the town of Tai Po in the northern New Territories. Rescuers were attempting to reach passengers trapped in the wreckage, although police were unable to say how many were still inside the bus. The dead included 17 males and two females, police said. It was not immediately known what caused the accident. Deadly accidents are rare on the southern Chinese city's public transport system, which it promotes as one of the best infrastructures in the world. Fire at women's hostel in Vizag; all inmates safe
A fire broke out Safe Hands Ladies Hostel, a facility for working women, here in the early hours today. There were no casualties as some inmates saw smoke coming out from a ceiling fan in one of the rooms and immediately alerted others and evacuated the building. There were some 40 women inmates in the hostel, located near Asilmetta Junction under Three Town Police station limits, when the fire broke out around 1.30 am, a police official said. Fire department officials said short circuit on the top floor was the probable cause. Belongings of some of the inmates were destroyed in the blaze. Some inmates alleged that the fire department didn't respond quickly enough. Fire inspector N Gopikrishna refuted the allegation, saying timely action by firemen saved some lives. "We will serve a notice to the hostel management for violation of safety norms and not having a No-Objection Certificate from the fire department," he said.

Nearly 40 geologists from China and Pakistan have teamed up to survey the Makran Trench in Balochistan following Beijing's concerns over the possibility of a massive earthquake affecting the strategic Gwadar port in the volatile province, a media report said today.
