First training course at NIDM's southern campus begins

The southern campus of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), located in Andhra Pradesh, today started its first training course, fulfilling the Centre's one of the obligations under the state's reorganisation act. A senior home ministry official said the first training course at the NIDM campus in Andhra Pradesh began today and four more courses will be conducted this year. With this, the central government fulfils one of its constitutional obligations arising out of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, the official said. The NIDM in Andhra Pradesh has been functioning without any disruption and there are no plans to close down or relocate the institute, the official said. The week-long national-level training programme, which began today, is on psycho-social care in disaster while a training programme on coastal community resilience will be conducted from February 7 to 9. One crew dead, another missing in Japan army helicopter crash

One crew member was confirmed dead and another was missing today after a Japanese military helicopter crashed in a residential area in the southwest of the country, reportedly injuring a local girl and setting a home on fire. A 26-year-old co-pilot was found unconscious following the crash in the town of Kanzaki and later confirmed dead, a defence ministry spokesman said. "We are still searching for the 43-year-old pilot," the spokesman told AFP, retracting earlier remarks made by Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera, who said both crew members on board were retrieved "in a state of cardiac and respiratory arrest." That language is often used by Japanese officials before deaths are officially confirmed. Kerala to protect 'good samaritans' helping accident victims

The Kerala government is thinking of formulating a new law to protect people wholend a helping hand to road accident victims, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said today. Strict instructions have been given to police asking them to ensure that those helping the victims are not put to any difficulty, Vijayan told the state assembly. Instructions have also been given to investigators against enlisting them as witnesses to be examined, if they are not eye-witnesses to the accident, he said. Fear of litigation and legal consequences often prevent people from helping accident victims, he said. The chief minister was replying to a submission raised by opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala on increasing road accidents and the plight of 'good samaritans' who rush to help victims but later find themselves entangled in legal issues. Former Prez Pratibha Patil waits half an hour for flight to

A Jet Airways flight with former president Pratibha Patil onboard today had to wait for over half an hour to land at the Sanganer airport due to ongoing work on the runway. According to the airport officials, the flight, which reached before time, came when the runway was closed for one hour -- from 2.20 pm to 3.20 pm. "For this specific time period of one hour, a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) was issued but the flight came before time therefore it was kept on hold in the air," the airport director J S Balhara told PTI. However, the flight was landed on priority after the NOTAM period got over, Balhara informed. Former president Pratibha Patil was among the 68 passengers travelling in the flight from Indore to Jaipur. The flight, which arrived here at 2.42 pm, was in the air and could land on the runway at 3.25 pm only after the runway was opened. 1 feared dead in Japan chopper crash

One person was feared killed when a Japanese Self-Defence Force (SDF) helicopter crashed near an elementary school in Saga Prefecture in Kyushu Island in southwestern Japan on Monday.According to local firefighters attending the scene, one person is feared dead.According to the Japanese public broadcaster NHK, the Saga Prefectural Police headquarters received an emergency call that an SDF helicopter had crashed near the Chiyoda Chubu Elementary School in Kanzaki City at around 4:45 pm (local time).The city office said that a residential building caught fire after the helicopter crashed near the school and Dairyuji kindergarten, according to Xinhua.An eyewitness told local media that she heard a loud "bang." Fire at GIFT City's temporary administrative office

A fire broke out at the temporary administrative office of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) near here today, officials said. Gift City staff first tried to douse the flames using in-house fire-fighting system and then called the fire brigade, said the Chief Fire Officer of Gandhinagar, Mahesh Modh. Modh and his team rushed to the GIFT City campus with three fire tenders. As the fire was spreading fast due to strong winds, more fire tenders were called in, he said. The temporary administrative block houses an office, a conference room and a cafeteria. "The fire started in one part of the single-storey structure and quickly spread in adjacent portions. Though it wasn't major when it was first spotted, it spread quickly due to strong winds. We have called in additional fire tenders from Ahmedabad and Kalol," said Modh. 4 killed in 53-vehicle pile-up on icy Chinese highway

A pile-up involving 53 vehicles on an icy highway today killed at least four persons in southwest China's Yunnan Province, officials said. The pile-up occurred in Kunming City, on the freeway that connects Kunming, the provincial capital, with Chuxiong. Four persons died after falling off a highway bridge when trying to move to another lane, according to the provincial traffic police. Three people suffered minor injuries in the pile-up. A preliminary investigation showed that the brutal mash- up was caused due to icy roads. The freeway was temporarily closed to traffic, with more than 80 people stranded. Deadly road accidents are common in China, where traffic regulations are often flouted or go unenforced. China suffered more than 180,000 traffic accidents in 2015, killing 58,000 people, authorities said last year. Shop gutted in fire in Ambala

A shop at the Ambala Cantonment area near here today was gutted in a fire, police said. The incident took place at the Capital Chowk. No casualties were reported as the shop and the market were closed, they said. The market in the area usually remains closed on Monday. The shop's owner Rajiv Sethi said that the financial loss is yet to be calculated. The police said that they were informed about the matter by a passerby, who noticed smoke coming out from the shop. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was doused after two hours, they said, adding that the cause of fire is yet be ascertained. Three killed; nine injured in road accident in Bihar

Three persons including a woman and a minor girl were killed while nine others injured when a mini van carrying them fell into a roadside ditch in Bihar's Nawada district today, police said. The incident occurred on Nawada-Gaya main road at Barail village when the driver of the mini van, which was on its way to Gaya, lost control over the vehicle while trying to prevent a collision with an auto rickshaw coming from opposite direction, Town police station, station house officer (SHO) Anjani Kumar said. Three persons including a woman and a minor girl were killed on the spot while nine others injured in the incident, the SHO said. All the nine injured persons have been admitted to Nawada sadar hospital for treatment, he said.

Dubai airport retains top international spot in 2017

8 killed in gas leak at southern China steel mill

Gas leaking from a pipeline at a steel mill in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong killed eight people and injured 10 early today, local authorities reported. The Shaoguan city government said in a post on its microblog that the leak occurred at 3 a.m. at the Shaoguan Iron and Steel company's Songshan plant. It said the rescue and recovery effort was underway and the cause of the leak was under investigation. China has made considerable progress in improving industrial safety, but scores are still killed annually in the country's factories, coal mines and transportation networks. In 2015, an explosion traced to improperly stored chemicals killed at least 173 people in the port city of Tianjin, about an hour east of Beijing. More recently, 10 people were killed in an explosion at a biotech company workshop in the eastern city of Lianyungang on December 9.

A major gas leak at an iron factory in south China's Guangdong Province claimed eight lives, the local authorities said on Monday.According to the city government, The incident took place in the wee hours of Monday at Songshan iron factory in Shaoguan city.Ten people were hospitalised for inhaling poisonous smoke. Fire at LED bulb factory at Akola in Maharashtra

A major fire broke out at a LED bulb factory in an industrial area in Akola in eastern Maharashtra in the early hours. The blaze was brought under control by 6.30 in the morning, a fire officer said. Though no casualties were reported, the factory, Ashlesha Power Control Pvt Ltd, suffered extensive damage, he said. Fire officer Ramesh Thakre of the Akola Municipal Corporation told PTI that they were informed about the fire around 1.45 am. "It was a major fire. Seven fire tenders were pressed into service to douse it. The company is involved in LED bulb assembling and the fire could have been triggered by a short circuit," he said.
