Car slams into pedestrians in Shanghai, 18 hurt: government

A car drove onto a crowded pavement and ploughed into pedestrians in a busy area of central Shanghai today, injuring at least 18 people including three seriously, city authorities said. A brief official announcement said the incident occurred around 9.00 am (0100 GMT), when crowds of people would have been on their way to work. It said the cause of the accident was under investigation.

Earthquake jolts Maharashtra's Satara

An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 hit Maharashtra's Satara district on Friday morning.As per the meteorological department, the earthquake occurred at around 7: 11 AM in the morning.As of now, no casualties have been reported.Earlier on January 21, a quake of magnitude 3.6 had hit Maharashtra's Koyna.

Jharkhand: 5 killed, 7 injured in car-truck collision

At least five people were killed and seven others injured after a car they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck on Friday in Jharkhand's Latehar area.The speeding car lost its control and collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction.The family in the car was travelling to Asanapani from Daltanganj to attend a wedding.All the injured were initially admitted to Ghaylo Kudu Hospital. Later, they were referred to Ranchi Rims for better treatment.The deceased are yet to be identified.On getting information of the accident, the Kudu police rushed to the spot.A case has been registered in this connection.

Bus tragedy: toll rises to 44

The death toll in the bus tragedy of Murshidabad district mounted to 44 today, after rescue workers fished out the body of another passenger of the vehicle that broke the railing of a bridge and fell into a canal on January 29, police said. Search operation has been stopped after recovery of the male body today as there is no more report of anyone missing that could be related to the bus accident, a senior district administration official said. Bodies of 36 passengers were found from the Gogra canal at Balirghat area of the district on the day of the early morning accident. While six bodies were fished out on Tuesday, one more body were found yesterday. Eight persons were injured in the accident and they are undergoing treatment at the Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital. 12 killed in Chinese military plane crash: Report

At least 12 crew members of a Chinese military aircraft were killed when it crashed during a training exercise early this week, a media report said today. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force has confirmed that an aircraft crashed in the southwestern province during a training exercise on Monday. At least a dozen crew members were killed in the fatal crash, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported today quoting Chinese Air Force. The crashed aircraft was a new type of refuelling plane modified from the air force's Y-8 transport aircraft, it said.

China debating whether to raise sunken Iranian oil tanker

Chinese officials said today they are still debating whether to try to raise an Iranian oil tanker that sank last month with the loss of all 32 crew members. Transport ministry officials told reporters that 1,900 tons of the Sanchi's fuel oil and some of the tanker's natural gas condensate cargo remain trapped underwater, complicating plans to salvage the ship. "We need to consider whether the oil will ignite and explode, or cause other issues," said Zhi Guanglu, deputy head of the China Maritime Search and Rescue Center. Zhi said China was in communication with Iran, the ship's owners and its country of registration, Panama, "in accordance with international conventions." China is racing to find ways to extract the underwater oil, which could cause serious environmental damage. Fire in city medical college hospital, no casualty

A fire broke out in the third floor of the state-run National Medical College and Hospital here this evening, a Fire Brigade official said. There was no report of any casualty. The fire broke out from electrical wiring in the third floor of Rammohan Block of the hospital at Park Circus area in the central part of the city, the official said. The blaze was noticed at around 5 pm and was brought under control within a short time by three fire tenders.

Rajasthan: Factory gutted in fire

A cooler pad factory was gutted in fire in industrial area in the city, officials said today. However, no person was injured in the incident. The fire which broke out last night at 9.30 pm under Vigyan Nagar police station area here was controlled around 2 am early morning today with the help of 11 fire tenders, Amjad Khan, fire officer, Kota Municipal Corporation (KMC) said. "At least 11 fire tenders, of which 9 were from KMC, were engaged to control the fire that gutted three godowns of the factory," Khan said. According to police, no person besides the night watchman was at work in the factory during the time of the incident. "No injury or loss of human life was reported in the fire that engulfed three godowns of the factory, Circle in-charge (Vigyan Nagar police station) Manvendra Singh said. The cause of fire, though suspected to be short circuit, was yet to be ascertained, Singh added.

Fire in office building in China, no casualties: official

A multi-story office building in China's Zhengzhou, capital of central China's Henan Province, suffered heavy damage in a fire today but no casualties have been reported, local authorities said. The fire broke out around 1:40 pm (local time) in the office building called 'Yuansheng International', owned by the property developer Greenland, in Zhengdong New Area, said an official with the city publicity department. According to the official, the fire was initially seen on the building's thermal insulation layer. The flames swept through the building facade and burnt window frames were seen falling down, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. So far, no casualties had been reported, and firefighters were working to douse the flames, the report said.

Gas poisoning at steel plant kills 9 in China

Gas poisoning at an iron and steel plant in China's southwest Guizhou province has killed nine persons and injured two others, authorities said today. The incident occurred when workers were conducting an overhaul of the generator boiler at Shougang Shuicheng Iron and Steel Company Limited in Liupanshui city, state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Russia launches 11 space satellites 'without glitch'

Russia today successfully launched 11 satellites from its Vostochny cosmodrome, in the third rocket liftoff from the new spaceport, the space agency said. The country's first orbital launch of 2018 came after a similar liftoff from the cosmodrome in eastern Russia ended in embarrassment, with officials losing contact with a weather satellite last November. Lifting off as scheduled early today, the Soyuz rocket carried two Russian Earth monitoring satellites as its primary payload and nine US and German piggyback satellites. During its mission the Fregat upper-stage rocket performed a complex sequence, forming several orbits for the delivery of the satellites, the Roscosmos space agency said. "In accordance with the flight programme, the Fregat uppper-stage placed into orbit space vehicles of main and secondary payloads," the space agency said in a statement. Train carrying Republicans crashes, one dead

Japan fire kills 11 at home for elderly people

Eleven people died after a fire broke out at a residence for elderly people with financial difficulties in northern Japan, police said today. Television footage showed the three-story building engulfed in flames and dozens of firefighters battling the blaze in snowy conditions. Pictures of the aftermath showed the blackened husk of the building, whose roof had apparently collapsed due to the fire. The victims -- eight men and three women -- were among 16 residents of the facility in Sapporo, Hokkaido, run by a local organisation.
