City spokesman: At least 6 dead in Bronx building fire

The New York City mayor's press secretary says at least six people have died in a blaze at a Bronx apartment building on a frigid night, and several more have been injured. Press Secretary Eric Phillips says the eventual toll is still uncertain. The Fire Department of New York said earlier that 15 people were seriously injured in the fire near the Bronx Zoo last night. About 170 firefighters are at the five-story, walk-up apartment house. Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'- zee-oh) also plans to head there. Temperatures are in the teens in New York, with winds making it feel like single digits. One of the deadliest fires in recent memory happened elsewhere in the Bronx in 2007. Nine children and one adult died in a blaze sparked by a space heater.

The death toll in Mumbai's Kamla Mills fire rose to 14, confirmed the dean of King Edward Memorial (KEM) hospital on Friday.Avinash Supe further informed that 12 people who sustained minor injuries were being treated at the hospital."14 people have been killed. 6 hurt in Seattle as van crashes into building

Around six people were injured after a van lost control and crashed into a building in a busy shopping area in downtown Seattle.The incident occurred at the busy Westlake Center shopping district in downtown Seattle, which is very popular among locals and tourists, local media reported.Seattle Police Chief M. Garth Green said, "According to our preliminary information, the van driver suffered a medical condition and lost consciousness. The van jumped the curb, went up onto the sidewalk and struck four pedestrians. A fifth person was struck by glass from windows that shattered when the van hit the store."The police chief also mentioned that six people, including the driver, have been taken to the Harborview Medical Center for treating their injuries. Six coaches of Manduadih Express derail at New Delhi Railway station

At least six coaches of Manduadih Express train derailed at New Delhi Railway station on late Thursday night.However, no injuries or casualties have been reported as yet.The incident took place at around 10. 30 pm when the train was about to depart from the New Delhi railway station.The train will now depart at rescheduled time 01:00 am.The last six bogies are being removed and fresh bogies are being attached.The Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) has reached the spot to take stock of the situation while arrangements were being made to evacuate the passengers."The reason of the derailment is not known as yet. It will be ascertained after inquiry. As of now all the passengers who were in the derailed bogies are being shifted," Naveen Parsuram, ADRM .

19-year-old hit by car on Noida-Greater Noida E-way; killed

A 19-year-old man was killed in a road accident last night on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, police said today. Agra resident Dharamvir was a trader, they said. He along with his only son Saurah (19) had gone to Delhi and were on way back. Near Gulavali village they stopped the car and Saurabh got out to urinate, a police official said. As he was entering his vehicle a speeding car hit him and dragged him along for a few hundred meters, the official said. The shell-shocked father fell unconscious, he added. A car driver took both of them to Kailash hospital where Saurabh died during treatment, the police official said. Knowledge Park police station SSI Virendra said a manhunt had been launched to arrest the driver who caused the accident. According to the police, Saurabh's father wanted to stop the car at a roadside dhaba but the youth searched the internet and found the nearest eat-out was far away.

Air Force official, wife killed in road accident in MP

An Indian Air Force sergeant and his wife died today when their car collided with another car on the Agra-Bombay Road (AB Road) here. Subhashpura Police Station in-charge Surendra Yadav said, "Air Force Sergeant Ajay Kumar Pandey (42) and his wife Manju Pandey (40) died after their car collided with another car in front of Baba petrol pump on AB Road today afternoon." He added that the couple's daughter, Anamika (14), was injured in the accident and has been hospitalised. Pandey was returning after meeting his son Mohit, who is studying in Kota in Rajasthan, the official said. Yadav said that executive engineer of MP's Water Resource Department, PC Batham, and his driver Nand Kishor, who were travelling in the other car, were also injured and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital. The official added that state cabinet minister Lal Singh Arya who was passing by stopped his vehicle and helped in getting the injured shifted to the hospital.

'AI's 28 pilots and 9 cabin crew skipped alcohol test in 2017'

Twenty eight pilots and nine cabin crew of Air India skipped the mandatory alcohol test this year, the Centre informed parliament today. As part of the safety regulations of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), all pilots and cabin crew must undergo the breath analyser (BA) test, before and after flights. "As on 21.12.2017, 28 pilots and 9 cabin crew have skipped the BA test," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha said in response to a question in Lok Sabha. He said the license of these pilots and cabin crew were suspended for three months. Any crew member, who tests positive in the pre-flight medical check or refuses to take a breath analyser test, is taken off flying duty for at least four weeks, and the airline is required to initiate disciplinary proceedings, according to civil aviation rules. Forecasters warn Britain may face coldest night of the year

Met Office forecasters say Britain may face the coldest night of the year today and say snow predicted for parts of northern England may spread to a wider area. The cold snap has snarled road traffic and led to some flight cancellations. Officials at Stansted Airport said Thursday that normal flight operations had resumed but some of the 300 passengers who had been stranded overnight are still at the terminal. They are rebooking on other flights. Flights had been suspended when the runway was closed due to ice. Luton Airport also reported some delays. Several major highways are closed because of crashes and three climbers had to be rescued from the Cairngorms mountains in northeast Scotland.

2 die after car ploughs into stationary vehicles in UP

Two people were killed and one was severely injured today when their car ploughed into a stationary truck and a pickup van on the Agra Expressway, police said. Deepak (35) and Sumit (38) were killed when their car crashed into the truck and the van left on the expressway near Pancham Thoda village after they were involved in an accident due to heavy fog, they added. Ker BJP leaders meet Central team visiting cyclone-hit areas

BJP leaders in Kerala today asked the central team visiting cyclone Ockhi-hit areas to ensure that funds sanctioned for the victims were not diverted for any other purpose. BJP leaders led by party state President Kummanom Rajasekharan met the team members and asked them to see that funds reached those affected by the cyclone. The delegation in a memorandum sought steps to relocate fishermen to safer places. Assistance should be given to them to modernise their fishing equipment, the memorandum said. It also sought inclusion of the state in the Centre's Sagarmala project, which envisages a series of schemes to leverage the country's coastline and inland waterways to drive industrial development. The memorandum, submitted to the team led by Bipin Mallick, Additional secretary (Disaster Management) under the Union Home Ministry, also sought a comprehensive rehabilitation package for the affected people. Central team visit parts of Chennai,Kanyakumari to assess

A Central team today visited parts of Chennai and Kanyakumari districts to assess the damage caused by torrential rains and cyclone Ockhi. While one group visited parts of Chennai and its neighbourhood, the otherheld discussions with fisherfolk in Kanyakumari, which was battered by Ockhi last month. Members of the fishing and farming communities expressed their grievances to the team members. Relatives of missing fishermen wanted the government to expedite search and rescue of the fishermen still missing in the aftermath of the cyclone. Revenue Secretary B Chandramohan told reporters here that the team will continue their survey of the affected areas in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur till tomorrow. Slight intensity quake shakes Uttarakhand

A slight intensity earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale shook parts of Uttarakhand this evening. Epicentred in the hilly Chamoli district, the earthquake, the second this month, was felt in various parts of the state around 4.45 PM, MeT office Director Vikram Singh said. It had a depth of 33 km which eliminates any possibility of damage to life and property, he said. An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale had shaken the whole of Uttarakhand on the night of December 6. The last one had its epicentre in Rudraprayag, another hilly district neighbouring Chamoli.
