India to fund projects worth Rs 237.1 cr in Sri Lanka's eastern province

India is to provide Rs 2,371 million to Sri Lanka for 33 development projects in education, health and agriculture sectors in the eastern province, it was announced on Tuesday. The cabinet has approved a proposal to sign an MoU to boost socio-economic development and bilateral ties between the two countries, cabinet spokesman and the Health Minister Nalinda Jayathissa told reporters here. India is to provide Rs 315 million for education, Rs 780 million for health and Rs 620 million for agriculture under the arrangement. These projects, among the slew of others, are aimed at enhancing infrastructure, growth and empowering local communities.

DU to introduce one-year PG course from 2026, proposal to be discussed soon

In line with the National Education Policy, Delhi University will introduce a one-year postgraduate programme starting in 2026. The draft proposal will be discussed at the Academic Council meeting scheduled for December 27, according to the agenda to be tabled for the meeting. Several changes have been incorporated into the plan, but some teachers have criticised the move, alleging it is being rushed for discussion. DU has already implemented a four-year undergraduate programme, with the third semester currently underway. Under this framework, students exiting after the first year receive a certificate, those leaving after the second year are awarded a diploma, and those completing three years obtain a degree. Students who complete the fourth year earn a degree with honours. After three years, students can opt for a two-year PG course, while those completing four years can enrol in the one-year PG programme. Drop in number of students impact Kota's coaching, hostel industry

Business has slowed down for coaching centres and hostels in Kota following negative publicity over student suicides, new guidelines regulating coaching centres and the expansion of coaching brands to other cities, according to industry stakeholders. The number of students in Kota has fallen to 85,000 to 1 lakh this year from the usual 2 to 2.5 lakh, reducing the annual revenue to Rs 3,500 crore from Rs 6,500 to 7,000 crore, they said. Despite the setback, stakeholders remain optimistic about the credibility of the Kota coaching model and its environment, that is absent in other cities. Kota's educational system and environment are unmatched and will attract students back next session, which will compensate for the decline, Govindram Mittal, Zonal Chairperson, United Council of Rajasthan Industries said. He said that industrialists are also looking at alternative opportunities, with plans to establish Information Technology (IT) hubs in the city, modelled after Bengaluru. Earlier
