A knife-wielding man attacked primary school children in China's Hunan province on Wednesday, killing two students. The incident occurred at 7.16am on Wednesday at Wanquan Elementary School in the town of Baijiaping, Ningyuan county. Two persons were also injured in the attack. The suspect was arrested, state-run China Daily reported. There has been a series of knife and axe attacks in China in recent years, many targeting children. Such attacks are often blamed on people with mental illness or who have personal grievances. Knives are most commonly used, because gun controls are extremely strict in China. Last month, seven people were killed when a disgruntled man ploughed his car through pedestrians in China's Zaoyang City.

Around 15 persons, including eight policemen, were injured here on Tuesday in a clash between the police and agitating contractual teachers. The police carried out a lathicharge when the agitators tried to block the road in front of a placement agency's office in Minto Park area demanding salary hike, police said. The agitators were computer teachers appointed in government schools and colleges across the state on contract through the placement agency. The entire area turned into a battlefield when the police resorted to lathicharge to disperse around 300 teachers who were forcibly trying to enter a building where the placement agency's office was located. Six agitators were arrested in connection with the incident, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. "The placement company was getting Rs 3.50 lakh per school annually from the government and was providing a monthly salary of Rs 4,500 to each teacher for the last 4-5 years. The government has extended the last date for receipt of post-graduate applications for next year by over a month to allow medical colleges to apply for adding more seats as per the revised norms. The move comes after the Health Ministry approved the proposal of the Board of Governors of the Medical Council of India to extend the last date for receipt of applications for starting post graduate medical courses for the session 2020-21 from April 7 to May 15, a health ministry official said. As per the revised norms, the ICU beds will henceforth be counted in the total bed strength of the medical colleges which in turn would help in creating more post-graduate seats. Also, the revised regulations provides for more number of students for each post-graduate teacher, the official said.

The Lokayukta police Tuesday nabbed a Madhya Pradesh Education department official for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a retired teacher, police said. Mukesh Verma (50), an accountant at Government Higher Secondary School, Kodariya, about 30 kilometres from here, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe from retired teacher Kamal Kishore Soni in his office, Indore Lokayukta Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Praveen Singh Baghel said. "Verma had demanded a bribe of Rs 1.50 lakh for sanctioning Rs 4.71 lakh to Soni, this amount being the encashment of 207 leaves of the latter. A trap was laid and Verma was caught while accepting an instalment of Rs 50,000," Baghel informed. Verma has been charged under the Prevention of Corruption Act and further probe into the case was underway, the DySP said.
The AAP government on Tuesday challenged in the Delhi High Court its single judge order allowing private unaided schools in the national capital to go ahead with an interim hike in fees to implement the recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission on salaries of teachers and other employees. The Directorate of Education (DoE) Tuesday directed government and municipal schools to register eligible students of their institutions for the entrance test of the Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas (RPVV). The RPVV schools were opened in 1997 and were an initiative by the Delhi government to provide good education to meritorious students from marginalised backgrounds. There are currently 22 RPVVs in Delhi. All the heads of government, government-aided schools of DoE, North Delhi Municipal Corporation and Delhi Cantonment Board Schools are hereby directed to register all eligible students of their schools for entrance test in any of the Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalayas (RPVVs) as per choice of the students for admission in Class VI, the circular said. Students who have studied for at least two consecutive academic years -- 2017-18 and 2018-19 in the above-mentioned schools and passed Class 5 with at least 60 per cent marks are eligible for the entrance test.
The Delhi University Students' Union Tuesday wrote to the varsity vice-chancellor and the Election Commission to ensure that the April-May semester exams do not clash with the dates for voting in the Lok Sabha elections. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad-led DUSU appealed to students to consciously exercise their fundamental right to vote in the polls beginning April 11. The incident took place on March 27 in Mengmeng kindergarten in the city of Jiaozuo, according to the local public security department.
