Dharamshala schools to stay open on PM's rally day: dt admin

Facing the Opposition's allegation that it has ordered closure of schools in Dharamshala to ferry children to Prime Minister's Narendra Modi's rally site on December 27, the state government Tuesday withdrew its earlier order to shut down all educational institutions in the hill town on the day. The kangra district administration had earlier ordered closure of all schools and other educational institutions in Dharamshala on December 27, saying it was to ensure that school children do not get stuck up in possible traffic snarls on the rally day. In a fresh order, issued Tuesday, Kangra district administration said all educational institutes under the Dharmshala education block, will stay open on Thursday. Fadnavis launches school named after Vajpayee

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday launched the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Schools here on the occasion of 94th birth anniversary of the late prime minister. The school is affiliated to the Maharashtra International Education Board (MIEB), which the state government had set up with an aim to achieve higher education standards. Initially, 13 zilla parishad (ZP) schools would be part of this international board and the curriculum will be in the mother tongue, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said quoting Fadnavis on its official twitter handle. Teachers' association calls for Delhi University shutdown on Jan 2

The Delhi University Teachers' Association has called for a shutdown on January 2 protesting against the Academic Council, which it alleges is not resolving several issues including that of online entrance tests and regularisation of ad-hoc teachers. Delhi University's Academic Council will be meeting on January 2 and the university shutdown has been called against it. The Council was supposed to meet on December 12 but the meeting was postponed, a move that was met with criticism from the DUTA. "The varsity authorities have not shared the additional agenda. The agenda shared before the December 12 meeting, which was eventually cancelled, did not have issues pertaining to regularisation and absorption of ad-hoc teachers, online entrance tests, etc," said a DUTA member. Guv urges JU authorities to uphold academic atmosphere

West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi on Monday urged the authorities of Jadavpur University to ensure that the academic atmosphere of the varsity is not disturbed. Delivering his address at the convocation of Jadavpur University as Chancellor, Tripathi called upon the faculty and students to strive towards making JU a premier institute in the state and country. "It is the duty of the university administration to be updated about the happenings in the campus, during and even after class hours," he said, referring to reports about people frequenting the campus after dusk. Asked to comment on the matter, JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Suranjan Das told reporters, "We will do whatever is permissible within the law." PM to inaugurate Indian Science Congress on Jan 3

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 106th Indian Science Congress on January 3 next year at Lovely Professional University near here, the varsity said on Monday. A release by LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal said the theme of the four-day event is 'Future India: Science and Technology' and it will culminate on January 7. Modi will also address an audience of about 30,000 scientists, researchers and students on the occasion, he said. Delhi University's Academic Council meet on Jan 2

Delhi University's Academic Council will be meeting on January 2, according to an official notification by the varsity Monday. The Academic Council was supposed to meet on December 12 but the meeting was postponed, a move that was met with criticism from the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA). In a letter written on December 11 to the varsity's vice-chancellor, the DUTA had said, "Teachers are no longer willing to put up with the administration's lackadaisical approach towards matters of governance and believe that you must either act or step down." The DUTA had urged the Academic Council to take up the matters pertaining to the regularisation or absorption of teachers through permanent appointments.

Prabhu inaugurates FDDI Bihar campus

Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Suresh Prabhu Monday inaugurated the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) campus at Bihta in Patna district. Prabhu announced that a 'centre of excellence' will be set up at a cost of Rs 14 crore in the campus in order to promote 'efficiency and innovation' in leather industry. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said the state government had provided 10 acres of land free of cost for setting up of the FDDI campus. The FDDI campus was built at a cost of Rs 115.95 crore. 'Severe shortage of teachers in public schools'

Severe shortage of teachers in public schools makes quality education a far cry for children, says a study conducted by a child rights NGO. The study by Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA) and Child Rights and You (CRY) reveals that notwithstanding increased budgetary allocations for school education in many states, scarcity of duly qualified teachers and lack of proper school infrastructure are the major pain points that still remain. The study analysed the school education budgets for six states - Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. It brought to fore that even though the states have increased funding for school education in the 14th Finance Commission period, they have not fully utilised their budgets to change the composition of their school education spending. PETA India submits petition backing Centre's proposal to ban animals in circuses

Animal rights body PETA India on Monday submitted a petition to the Environment Ministry backing the Centre's proposal to ban use of animals in circuses. The petition has been signed by over 8,000 people, including school and college students, and celebrities, the body said. The central government recently proposed prohibition on the use of animals for performances, exhibition at any circus or mobile entertainment facilities, a move which was hailed by animal rights activists as "progressive and laudable". The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India said apart from students, the petition has been signed by celebrities like Raveena Tandon, Sonu Sood, Shilpa Shetty Kundra, John Abraham, R Madhavan, Dia Mirza and Sunny Leone. College binge drinkers posting on social media while drunk: Study

College students who binge drink are frequently posting online while intoxicated and show signs of social media "addiction," according to a US study. The study, published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, shows students later may regret their drinking-related posts and experience other negative consequences from combining social media and alcohol use. "During these times when young students are feeling disinhibited by alcohol, they may be even more likely than usual to post inappropriate material without considering the future impact," said Natalie A Ceballos from Texas State University in the US. "In some cases, these sorts of mistakes have even influenced college admission and later job applications," Ceballos said. Students of IIT-Hyderabad get 213 offers from 80 companies

: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Hyderabad Monday said its students saw as many as 213 offers from 80 companies during the phase-I of campus placements for 2018-19. In 2017-18, 191 students had been placed in 68 companies. A total of 418 students registered for the phase-I of placements held between December 1 and December 22, a press release said here. The students have accepted 17 pre-placement offers from companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Schlumberger, Qualcomm, Goldmansachs, Swiggy, Electronic Arts and DeShaw, the release said. China-India Yoga College to open 50 branches in China

China's first Yoga college in Yunnan province, which was set up as part of cultural exchange programme between the two nations, has planned to open 50 more branches across the country as the popularity of India's ancient physical and spiritual discipline continues to grow all over China, state media reported.
