The Delhi High Court Tuesday dismissed a plea of NSUI's Sunny Chillar challenging the election of ex-Delhi University Students' Union president Ankiv Baisoya for allegedly furnishing a fake bachelor's degree to get admission in the institution. The order was passed by Justice Yogesh Khanna on Chillar's plea in which he had also contended that once the degree was found to be fake, the nomination itself becomes void ab-initio and therefore, the two-month period for conducting fresh elections won't apply in this case. Baisoya had resigned from his post on November 15 and was also suspended from the student outfit till an inquiry into allegations that he gained admission in the varsity on the basis of a fake degree. Chillar had lost to Baisoya in the race for the post of DUSU president.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union has accused the varsity of dropping the subscription of important journals over paucity of funds. Making the announcement at a press conference, the students body shared documents of the Library Advisory Committee meeting held last month. Prior to holding the presser, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) said it had got a letter from the administration advising them not to hold the press conference outside the library since such activities within 100 metres of the administration block have been prohibited by the Delhi High Court. The JNUSU, however, said the press conference was held 800 metres away from the administration block. It alleged that seven subscriptions were dropped by the varsity. These include EBSCO -International Security and Counterterrorism, Wiley Subject Collection Journal, Nature Journals, Sage Journals, Cambridge Journal, Cell Press Journal and Science Direct, the JNUSU said. The Governing Body of DU's Dyal Singh College sealed the office of principal IS Bakshi despite the Delhi High Court putting a stay on the decision of the body asking him to proceed on leave. In September, the governing body of the college, under its chairman Amitabh Sinha, had sent principal Bakshi on leave and initiated a probe against him for alleged financial and administrative irregularities. In October, the body had also sealed Bakshi's office and asked him not to enter the college to ensure that the probe is not affected. Sinha's tenure ended in the first week of November. Bakshi had approached the Delhi High Court which put a stay on the Governing Body's decision on December 14, following which Bakshi joined office. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved a financial cost of Rs 2,242.03 crore during 2018-19 and 2019-20 for rolling out the revamped scheme, an official statement said. The CCEA has further approved constitution of an autonomous society under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs similar to Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti to run the Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) and upgradation of the already sanctioned EMRSs on need basis with unit cost subject to a maximum of Rs 5 crore per school. It also approved setting up sports facilities in 163 tribal-dominated districts at a unit cost of Rs 5 crore each by the year 2022. "A total of 102 such blocks are already having EMRSs. The Jammu and Kashmir government announced Monday winter vacation from January 7 to 16 for all government and recognised private schools up to higher secondary level falling under summer zone of Jammu division. "The last working day in all schools (government and private) shall be January 5 and the winter vacation shall be observed from January 7 to 16," reads an order issued by the School Education Secretary. It added that the teaching faculty shall report for duties in advance on January 15, 2019, to supervise the arrangements for reopening of schools. According to the order, the teaching and non-teaching staff, along with the heads of the institutions, associated with the rehearsal of march-past and cultural events to be presented on the Republic Day, shall continue to attend their duties during the vacation. "Such officials shall be provided incentives in terms of Rule 27 of the Jammu and Kashmir Civil Services (Leave) Rules, 1979," it stated.
Schools run by the West Bengal government will soon have to put up a notice in classrooms, with detailed information about the curricula and chapters that would be taught by the teachers during a particular semester, an official said. A notification has been issued by the department of school education, asking all state-run schools to abide by the instruction from the next academic session, he said. "The new rule is aimed at giving the students a clear idea about what they will learn before the next summative internal assessment test. It will also apprise the teachers of the lessons they need to cover in a given period," the school department official said. Three summative assessment tests are held every year in state-run schools - one during March-April, second around July-August and the third in November-December. Lt Governor Anil Baijal Monday asked the Delhi government to audit all third party-run children homes and shelter homes in the city to ensure the safety and security of the inmates. Baijal also instructed officials concerned to deploy more female civil defence volunteers and guards in schools to instill a sense of security among the girls students, an official statement said. There are a total of 4,219 women's-only colleges and universities in the country, the HRD ministry told the Parliament on Monday. The information was shared by Union Minister of State for HRD Satya Pal Singh in response to a written question in Lok Sabha. "The total number of women's colleges or universities functioning in the country teaching arts, science, commerce and medicine is 4,219," Singh said. Uttar Pradesh has maximum women's-only institutions at 843 followed by Rajasthan (684) and Tamil Nadu (383). "The government is taking steps to upgrade the existing colleges to model degree colleges and autonomous colleges to universities, including women varsities, through the centrally sponsored RUSA scheme. The government is also supporting construction of hostels under the equity initiative of the scheme," he added.
