The Supreme Court on Friday said the state governments across the country can allocate remaining seats in post graduate medical courses in private medical colleges on the basis of all-India NEET merit list.

Over 11 lakh students had registered for the Class 12 examination, which was marred with controversy over the paper leak issue. CBSE Class 12 results for Academic Session 2017-18 to be declared on 26th of May, Education Secretary Anil Swarup tweeted. The Board had conducted a re-test of Class 12 economics paper on April 25, nearly a month after it was leaked triggering widespread outrage and confusion among students across the country. The CBSE had also postponed the examinations scheduled to be held on April 2 in Punjab at the request of the state government in view of 'Bharat Bandh' called by several Dalit organisations against the alleged "dilution" of the SCs/STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The examinations were held in March and April.
Authorities have detained someone in what they described as an "active shooter" situation at a suburban Indianapolis middle school. The Noblesville Fire Department tweeted Friday morning that it was on an "active shooter" scene at Noblesville West Middle School and that a suspect was in custody. It didn't say whether anyone had been shot or provide any other details. TV helicopter footage shows students being led out of the school and onto buses. Noblesville is north of Indianapolis.
The Supreme Court today agreed to suggestions that the vacant post-graduate seats in private unaided medical colleges could be filled up as per the order of merit in the All-India National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) list. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Indu Malhotra said this while hearing a matter of Uttar Pradesh during which the Medical Council of India (MCI) said that almost 41.95 per cent of post-graduate medical seats for academic year 2018-2019 in private unaided medical colleges in the state have remained vacant. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Pinky Anand, who appeared for the Centre, suggested to the bench that "a similar dispensation can be followed in other states, if they so desire, while ensuring that the cut-off date of May 31, 2018 is strictly adhered to". Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited Visva Bharati University today to participate in its convocation, apologized to the students for paucity of water during the programme. "When I was coming I saw some students gesturing to me that they have no drinking water. As the chancellor of the university I apologise to the students for this problem," Modi said at the beginning of his convocation address. Unruly scenes were witnessed inside the convocation venue 'Amra Kunja' just before the prime minister arrived there as students protested over paucity of water, an official said. The students alleged that some of them fell sick as there was inadequate arrangement for water and other facilities at the venue. The university authorities, however, said the protesters were outsiders and had nothing to do with Visva Bharati. "Some of the protesters were identified and asked to leave the venue. The problem has been taken care of," said an official of the university.
Over 91 per cent students passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam conducted last month by the Goa education board, an official said. The results of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary School Education (GBSHSSE) were announced today. Talking to reporters, GBSHSSE chairman Ramakrishna Samant said 91.27 per cent students have cleared the SSC exam. "Of the total 19,596 candidates who appeared for the exam, 17,886 passed it," he said. As many as 78 schools (57 aided and 21 government-run schools) secured 100 per cent results, he said. According to Samant, the SSC exam was conducted between April 2 and 21 at 27 exam centres across the state.

The Ghaziabad District Magistrate has ordered all unrecognised schools in the district to be closed.Around 10,000 students studying in the Ghaziabad district will now be enrolled in recognised government schools by June this year.The district magistrate said that at least 5,000 students have been enrolled in council seasons.The measure has been taken to prevent the students' session being wasted.The Primary Education Department has issued a number of unrecognised schools running in the district. The Ghaziabad district administration has appealed to the parents to check the list before enrolling their child in any school.As per media reports, the district magistrate had earlier issued a notice to close 209 unrecognized schools in the district. At least 231 non-recognized schools were identified in the 2017-18 session. The Bombay High Court today said it cannot allow a homoeopathy student to appear for her first year repeat examinations as she was held ineligible by the college due to poor attendance. Fakeha Badami, in her petition filed earlier this week, claimed that her attendance was poor because the Sai Homoeopathic Medical College, located in Bhiwandi in the neighbouring Thane district, did not allow her to attend lectures as she wears the hijab. The college's lawyer, Sahil Salvi, refuted the allegations and said Badami, a resident of suburban Bandra, was held ineligible as she had low attendance. "The college is willing to let her appear for the second repeat exams, scheduled to be held in December this year, provided she attends all the repeat lectures that will be conducted till November," Salvi told a vacation bench of justices S J Kathawalla and A S Gadkari today. A 34-year-old woman school teacher has been arrested on charges of sexually exploiting a 15-year-old boy who used to visit her for tuition in Chandigarh, police said today. The woman, a science teacher, had been allegedly sexually exploiting him for the past two months, police said. The boy, a Class 10 student, lives in the same area as the teacher. "She was arrested yesterday on charges of sexually assaulting and exploiting the boy. She has been arrested under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO)," Sector 31 SHO Gurjit Kaur said. She was produced before the district court and sent to judicial custody. An NGO, which received a call about the matter, counselled the boy and he later disclosed that the teacher had been sexually assaulting him since March. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina arrived at Viswa Bharati University this morning to attend the convocation ceremony. Police have registered a case against 25 teachers for allegedly using fake education certificates to get employment. While an FIR was filed against 25 candidates for presenting bogus documents, show cause notices were issued to another nine erring candidates," Mukesh Agrawal, Principal at District Institute of Education and Training said. Their appointment of these teachers has also been cancelled, he said. He said that the police will now investigate the role of staff that had checked the certificates of the candidates. Agarwal did not rule out the involvement of staff of District Basic Shiksha Adhikari in the case.
Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) can now offer certificate, diploma and degree programmes in full-fledged online mode, along with, as has been the norm, those offered in the regular mode, sunject to certain conditions, the government announced on Thursday.

From this academic session, universities and higher educational institutions will be able to offer graduate, postgraduate and diploma programmes online, with the University Grants Commission (UGC) today approving regulations for such degrees. "In a landmark reform in the field of higher education, University Grants Commission has approved the UGC (Online Courses) Regulations. There was no such regulations earlier," Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted. "Today's decision will help top rated institutions to offer certificate, diploma & degree programmes in full-fledged online mode in only those disciplines in which it has already been offering the same or similar programmes or courses at graduation level in regular mode," he added.
