Prez to attend 9th convocation of YSPUHF in Himachal

President Ram Nath Kovind will attend the 9th convocation ceremony of Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry (YSPUHF) in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh on May 22. The state-run university was founded in 1985 with an objective to promote education and research in the fields of horticulture, forestry and allied disciplines. Former president R Venkataraman was the chief guest at the first convocation of the varsity held in the year 1988. DU admission: Over 43,000 applications within 24 hrs

Within 24 hours after Delhi University threw open its admission portal to aspirants, over 43,000 applicants submitted their forms for various undergraduate courses. "Since 6 pm yesterday, we have received 43,000 applications and there has been no technical glitches reported from our side," said an official associated with admissions. While the registration for undergraduate programmes commenced yesterday at 6 pm, registrations to postgraduate programmes and postgraduate diploma in cyber security and law registrations will begin on May 18. Registration for Ph.D and M.Phil programmes will begin on May 20. The university will hold 'Open Day' sessions between May 21 and May 29 (except Sunday) at Conference Centre near Gate number 4 on North Campus. "Open Days will have two sessions - 10 am to 11.30 am and 12 pm to 1.30 pm. On these days, information about registration, admission process, schedule and other related information would be provided," a DU statement said.

Students to say 'Jai Hind' during roll call in MP schools

Students across Madhya Pradesh would be responding to the roll call with 'Jai Hind' instead of the usual 'Yes sir' or 'Yes madam' from the coming academic year, as per a recent government order. The objective is to foster patriotism among children, said School Education Minister Vijay Shah. "We recently issued a directive to 1.22 lakh government schools and more than 35,000 private schools to ensure that students say 'Jai Hind' during the roll call from the coming academic session," Shah told PTI. "Students say 'Yes sir' or 'Yes madam' or 'present'. What good these English acknowledgements achieve?" the minister asked. "'Jai Hind' will foster love for the country and patriotism among students," he said, noting that Army and para-military personnel use 'Jai Hind' as a greeting. Cabinet nod to central university in Janthaluru district of Andhra Pradesh

The Cabinet today approved the setting up of a central university in Janthaluru district of Andhra Pradesh. A provision of Rs 450 crore has been approved for meeting the first phase expenditure towards establishment of the university. "The Union Cabinet gives in principle nod for setting up of 'Central University in the State of Andhra Pradesh' in village Janthaluru of Anantapur district. IGNOU's campus placement drive on May 18

The Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU) will organise a campus placement drive on May 18 for students pursuing graduation and select Post Graduate programmes. The drive is being organised by the university's Campus Placement Cell and Regional Centres of Delhi-NCR, and will be held from 10 am onwards at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Convention Centre in New Delhi. "Companies participating in this drive include: Aegis Services Pvt. Ltd., Aviva India, and Quikr.com," a statement issued by the IGNOU read. The students are required to carry photocopies of their resume (having IGNOU enrolment no), an ID proof, address proof, and passport size photograph at the time of interview. The list of selected/shortlisted students will be declared at the end of the day. The selected students will have to join immediately as these are urgent openings, the statement read.

The Union Cabinet has given its in-principle approval for establishing a Central University by the name of "Central University of Andhra Pradesh".The university will be set up in Janthaluru Village of Ananthapur district in the state.The cabinet was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Transport facility to children of habitations without schools

The Telangana Government has issued orders to provide transport facility to children of 1,862 habitations without schools in the state. The government would provide transportation facility to 20,754 children of 1,862 habitations which are without schools in Telangana during the 2018-19 academic year, a Government Order (GO) said. Girls outshine boys in Class XII exams in TN

Tamil Nadu government today declared the results for the Class XII exams held in March, with 91 per cent of the students emerging successful. Girls continued to outshine boys, with 94.1 per cent of them clearing the exams, which was 6.4 per cent more than that of the number of boys, according to statistics released by the state government. Around 9.07 lakh students had registered for the exams that were held from March 1 to April 6 this year. Among the districts that fared well, Virudhunagar topped the list, followed by Erode and Tirupur. Subject-wise, more number of students (96.4 percent) cleared Physics, followed by Chemistry, Biology and Maths. As many as 2,110 differently-abled students of the 2,602 who appeared for the exams came out in flying colours.

St Stephen's to begin admission process from May 21

Delhi University affiliated St Stephen's College has announced that admissions to its undergraduate courses will begin on May 21. "Applications for undergraduate admissions will be available online from May 21 onwards," said a notification issued by the college. Being a religious minority college, St. Stephen's follows a different admission process, however, students first have to register themselves in the Delhi University admission portal along with an admission fee. After a form number is generated, a student can apply to the college online using his/her email ID. Later, students, who clear the cut-offs, will also have to take up a written test and an interview, unlike admission to other undergraduate colleges. Delhi University began registration process for admissions to undergraduate courses offered by its affiliated colleges yesterday.

Madhya Pradesh: Mandatory for students to answer roll call with 'Jai Hind'

Madhya Pradesh government has announced that from now onwards, it is mandatory for the school students in the state to answer their roll-call with "Jai Hind".The education department stated that this step will instil a sense of patriotism among the students, read an official statement.Earlier in November 2017, Madhya Pradesh School Education Minister Vijay Shah said now students would answer to roll-calls by saying "Jai Hind" instead of "yes sir" and "yes ma'am".He had said that the step would be enforced in all 1.22 lakh government schools, and an advisory in this regard would also be issued to all private schools.

Principal arrested over corporal punishment in Pak college

The principal of a cadet college in Mastung in Pakistan's Baluchistan province was arrested after a video of students being subjected to hard corporal punishment went viral on the social media. DIG Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Aitzaz Goraya informed the Baluchistan High Court bench yesterday that the principal, Javed Iqbal Bangash, was placed under arrest. The court had ordered the police to arrest the principal soon after taking notice of the video in which students in red uniforms can been seen being caned mercilessly by some persons out in grounds of the college. Some of the students can be seen yelling with pain and trying to escape the caning. The incident, which had allegedly taken place on the principal's orders on May 9, was taken up by the court after a petition was filed. Goraya said that search was on for the other persons who administrated the punishment and all students had undergone medical examination. The court ordered the arrest of all the accused and asked for .

Registration deadline for Swachh Bharat Summer Internship extended till June 15

The government has extended the registration deadline for the Swachh Bharat Summer Internship till June 15. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the internship during his 'Mann Ki Baat' address on April 29. "Students of higher education institutions and members of Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan can now register for the internship till June 15. Earlier, the last date for registration was till May 15. "The extension has been given to facilitate the youth across the country, particularly those in colleges who would be pre-occupied with academic matters and examinations," a government statement read. Students and NYKS youths can sign up for the Swachh Bharat Summer Internship by logging on to the portal www.sbsi.mygov.in. The interns would be required to complete at least 100 hours of sanitation-related work in villages which would qualify them for 'Swachh Bharat Certificates'.
