College students in India check smartphones over 150 times a day: Study

On an average, a college student in India checks his mobile phone over 150 times a day, according to a study conducted by Aligarh Muslim University and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The research, titled "Smartphone Dependency, Hedonism and Purchase Behaviour: Implications for Digital India Initiatives", has been conducted in 20 central universities, where 200 students each were interviewed. "Anxiety and fear of missing out on information make university students check their mobile devices as many as 150 times a day on an average, an activity which can have adverse effects on the students' health as well as academics. "Only 26 per cent of the respondents said they use smartphones primarily to make calls. The remaining respondents use smartphones for other purposes such as accessing social networking sites, Google searches and for entertainment such as watching movies," said Mohammed Naved Khan, the Project Director. Mumbai twins score identical marks in ICSE Class 12 exam

Mumbai twins Rohan and Rahul Chembakasserill not just look identical but have also scored an identical percentage of 96.5 per cent in Class 12 ICSE exams. DU announces free preparatory classes for PG entrance exams for economically weaker students

The Delhi University has announced two weeks of free preparatory classes for post graduate entrance examinations for students from economically weaker sections and minority communities. The classes will be held for eight disciplines -- Commerce, Law, Journalism (Hindi and English), Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Computer Science and Zoology. "For the third consecutive year, the varsity is conducting such classes to help students clear entrance exam for various postgraduate programmes. The purpose is to prepare students for the academic approach to be adopted to clear the entrance," the varsity said in a statement. Tentative dates for commencement of the classes are June 1 for Commerce, Zoology, Law, Journalism (both languages), Chemistry and Physics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi today told students in Jammu that their real test would begin in a "big, open classroom" awaiting them outside their university, and asked them to set goals for 2022, when India celebrates 75 years of independence. Teacher arrested for trying to rape girl student in JK's Doda

A government teacher has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape a 13-year-old girl in a school in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, the police said today. The 48-year-old teacher, S K Manhas, was arrested from his house at Khellani village last evening after the girl's parents filed a complaint, alleging that the accused tried to rape her, said Muneer Khan, the Station House Officer of the Bhaderwah police station. The complaint alleged that the teacher called the girl to the classroom during the morning assembly on the pretext of searching her bag for lipstick. He then bolted the door and tried to rape her, Khan said. The accused fled the government middle school after the girl reported the incident to its management and her parents. JNU Academic Council okays course on 'Islamic Terrorism'

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Academic Council "passed" a proposal to set up a Centre for National Security Studies under which there would be a course on "Islamic Terrorism", a professor who attended its meeting today said. Many members of the Academic Council opposed the proposal to impart courses on 'Islamic Terrorism', arguing that it was communal in nature, Sudhir K Suthar, a special invitee to the 145th meeting of the Council, said. 10 people killed in Texas school shooting, gunman arrested

A student opened fire at a high school in the US state of Texas today, killing at least 10 people, mostly students, in the latest such incident in the country. The incident took place at Santa Fe High School in the city of the same name, located about 50 kilometres southeast of Houston. An unidentified law enforcement officer was shot, but sources said he was "clipped" and was not seriously injured. At least 10 people were killed in the gunfire, Houston Chronicle quoted federal and county law enforcement officials have confirmed. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a majority of those that were killed in the shooting were students. Plea in HC for implementation of 7th Pay Commission recommendations in unaided pvt schools

A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court today seeking a direction to the Delhi government and the three municipal corporations to ensure the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations regarding over two lakh teaching and non-teaching employees of nearly 2,000 unaided private schools here. The plea filed by an NGO also sought direction to the authorities to take appropriate action in accordance with the provisions of the Delhi School Education Act against the erring unaided private schools. Haryana: Rural students outshine urban counterparts in Class 12 exams

Students from rural areas in Haryana have performed better than their urban counterparts, while girls have outshone boys in the Class 12 state education board examinations, results for which were declared today. The overall pass percentage for the Class 12 Haryana School Education Board stood at 63.84 per cent. The result was declared jointly by Chairman of the Board, Dr Jagbir Singh and Secretary, Dhirendra Khadgata in a press conference organised at Board office in Bhiwani today. Nagaland Board declares Class X, XII results

The Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) has declared the results for Class X and Class XII examination results for 2018. NBSE conducted the High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSSLC) in March-April this year with 36,996 students appearing in the examinations, said a notification issued by NBSE Chairperson Asano Sekhose here today.
