End to students' protest a Ramzan gift: AMU VC

Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor today welcomed the end of the campus protest triggered by the Jinnah portrait row, describing it as a Ramzan gift to the entire AMU community. In an interview to PTI to mark his one year in office, Mansoor said, "I laud AMU students for exercising their democratic right to protest while totally maintaining exemplary discipline and communal harmony on the campus." Renowned physicist George Sudarshan cremated in US

Eminent Indian-American theoretical physicist EC George Sudarshan has been cremated in the US state of Texas, with his family and friends attending the last rites. Sudarshan, 86, who is survived by his wife Bhamathi Sudarshan and two children, died of natural causes on May 13 in Austin, Texas. His two sons Alex and Ashok performed the last rites at the Beck Funeral home near Roundrock. His wife Bhamathi sang Sudarshan's favourite song on Goddess Saraswathi. The University of Texas at Austin, where he worked since 1969, mourned his passing away. Several students and faculty from the Physics department attended the cremation service and spoke highly of the professor and his works. Proxy candidate at DU college arrested

A proxy candidate was arrested for allegedly writing the graduation exam on behalf of his friend at a Delhi University college, the police said today. Yashveer Yadav, a native of Rewari district in Haryana, was found taking the exam at Ramjas College. The invigilator found that the accused had pasted his picture on the entry card of the student, they said. He took the proxy candidate to the principal who in turn informed the police.

Nearly 80,000 applications for UG programmes in DU in three days

Nearly 80,000 applications have been received in the first three days for admissions to Delhi University's undergraduate courses which began on May 15, an official said today. The official associated with admissions, said a total of 79,906 applications have been received so far. Among them 39,286 are merit-based applications and 16,269 are entrance-based applications who have either completed or have almost completed the online registration process, the rest have not crossed even 50 per cent of the process. Around 25,000 of the applicants have made payments, the official added. "Total male applicants are 27,822, female 23,217 and other applicants only 12. Total unreserved applicants are 34,368 and total OBC non-creamy layer applicants are 9,853," the official said. The registration for UG programmes will end at 6pm on June 7. TN engineering admissions: Madras HC says no to offline mode

The Madras High Court today declined to accept a plea that offline mode for applying for engineering admissions in Tamil Nadu be continued, stating that "online mode was accepted by the public". A bench comprising Justices V Parthiban and P D Audikesavulu gave the order on pleas relating to admission to engineering courses in the state in both modes. The method of online counselling was successful for the past two years, the bench said, adding on a perusal it was convinced that the method of online registration, which was tested for the two immediate previous years has been successfully accepted by the public. Restriction to the online mode alone from 2018 onwards would not result in any deprivation of opportunity to eligible students to apply for admission, it said. Maha brings more castes in RTE Act's under-privileged category

The Maharashtra government today incorporated more caste groups and communities in the beneficiary list of students seeking admission in schools under the Right To Education (RTE) Act. Until now, the under-privileged category included students from SC (scheduled caste), ST (scheduled tribe), and Divyangs classes, which is now updated. All categories from VJ & NT (Vimukta Jati and Nomadic tribes), OBC (Other Backward Classes), and SBC (Special Backward Class) are inducted into the under-privileged category with a view to ensure that no student is deprived of education, a government resolution (GR) said. Under the updated list, HIV-positive students can also seek admission under the RTE Act, it stated. Left student groups unite to fight MHRD bid to 'end reservations'

National-level left student bodies today announced an alliance to fight "onslaughts" on higher education and alleged attempts by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to privatise education and end reservations through its policies. Organisations in the alliance include the All India Democratic Students Organisation, All India Students Federation (AISF), All India Students Association (AISA), All India Students Bloc and Students' Federation of India (SFI). DU students to beautify properties defaced during DUSU polls: DMRC to HC

The Delhi metro today told the high court here that it along with some Delhi University students, who defaced its properties during the varsity polls, had identified 10 sites for beautification as a pilot project. Taking note of the submission made by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which said the beautification work would be undertaken on June 9-10, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said let the needful be done and a report submitted before the next date of hearing on July 16. The court was hearing a plea by advocate Prashant Manchanda, who sought a complete ban on defacement of public properties by the DUSU poll candidates. Coaching centres providing tuition to prepare students for entrance examination are liable to pay 18 per cent GST, according to the Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR). An application was filed before the Maharashtra bench of the AAR to seek advance ruling on whether the services related to providing the coaching for entrance examination will come under the ambit of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). 'Simmple Shukla Tutorials' is engaged in providing the service of teaching to the students of class XI and XII and helps the students prepare for entrance examinations related to MBBS, engineering and other science related examinations. AMU students threaten fresh agitation if demands not met

Leaders of the AMU students' union today threatened to launch a fresh agitation if their demand for a judicial inquiry into the violence on the campus over a portrait of Pakistan founder Mohammed Ali Jinnah is not fulfilled. Anna University to offer UG courses at all campuses

Tamil Nadu government today announced introduction of undergraduate engineering courses in three zonal campuses of the city-headquartered state-run Anna University, a premier technical institute. This was aimed at providing access to quality technical education at low cost to students from economically backward families, who scored high marks, Chief Minister K Palaniswami said. Four UG courses will be introduced in the university's campuses in Tirunelveli, Madurai and Coimbatore. He said presently the varsity was offering UG and PG courses in four of its city-based campuses, besides 13 unitary colleges across the state. With the introduction of UG courses in the three zonal campuses, 60 students each would be admitted in the four courses from this academic year, the Chief Minister said. "I have directed launching of four UG courses from this academic year (2018-19) in these zones," Palaniswami said in a statement, adding requests in this regard have been received.
