Class 10 science question paper drafted by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has invited the ire of students and teachers who termed it as "very difficult, twisted and strange". The Goa Headmasters' Association (GHA), the body representing heads of all the schools in the state, has written to the GBSHSE protesting against the complicated question paper. However, the GBSHSE cited a recent survey conducted by the NCERT on problems faced by Goan students in science and mathematics for the difficult question paper. "The students who answered the SSC examination were shocked and in tears to find a very difficult, twisted and strange science question paper. About 75 per cent of the nearly 11 lakh students who skipped this year's Uttar Pradesh board examinations were from neighbouring states, and some of them were even from foreign countries like Nepal and Bangladesh, state's Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma has said. The startling fact came to the fore when details of those who skipped the examinations were analysed by the education department, Sharma, who also holds the education portfolio, told PTI in an interview. The state board exams were in news earlier this year as a large number of students did not turn up due to "strictness" and effective use of a special task force and local intelligence by the government to keep a tab on the cheating mafia. "We have come to know that about 75 per cent of those who skipped the examinations were from neighbouring states. Also candidates from countries like Nepal, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia and the UAE were among them," Sharma said. He said the state government took the help of the Special Task .

Ahead of the annual migration of nomadic Gujjars and Bakerwal families this month, authorities in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir today said over two dozen schools would move with them to ensure proper educational facilities to students. A total of 25 schools having an enrolment of 801 students - 410 boys and 391 girls - will move with the migratory population. "These schools have been provided 45 teachers for running the schools in higher reaches during the annual migration to higher reaches in Kashmir, an official spokesman said. He said district development commissioner, Rajouri, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary finalized the plan at a meeting of senior officers from various departments and heads of migratory schools along with staff. Scientists marched in the national capital today against "concerted efforts by some interest groups" to undermine science and to send a message that the propagation of "unscientific ideas" should be stopped. The 'March for Science' organised in Delhi was a part of a larger programme across the world to rally science supporters to defend the formation of evidence-based policy decisions. The march began at Mandi House and concluded at Parliament Street. A similar march was organised by scientists last year. "In India concerted efforts by some interest groups to undermine science continue unabated. Unscientific and superstitious beliefs are being propagated at an accelerate rate," the organising committee behind the march said in an appeal. Four persons including three engineering students drowned in the Azhiyar dam near Pollachi in the district today, police said. The incident occurred when 10 first year engineering students of a private college here had gone to the dam to spend the day. Three of them were bathing at a banned spot and drowned in the water, police said. On hearing the screams of their friends, a person present at the place, immediately jumped into the water and tried to rescue them, they added. However, he also drowned, police said adding some persons on the bank managed to bring them out of the water. While two students died on the spot, the others were declared brought dead by the government hospital in Pollachi, police said.
Scientists and academicians of Bengal today took part in the 'March for Science' rally here to promote scientific temper among people. The rally, which was taken out from Ramlila Maidan to Esplanade, also demanded allocation of at least 3 per cent of GDP to scientific and technological research and 10 per cent towards education among other issues, a statement of the organisers said. The Kolkata Organizing committee and an NGO, Breakthrough Science Society, were behind the city-leg of the rally. The second edition of the 'March for Science' rally was taken out in several other cities in the country during the day. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked varsities whether they have implemented the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and revised their curriculum accordingly. It has asked the universities to furnish the details by April 18. The commission had introduced the CBCS in 2015 to allow "seamless mobility" across higher education institutions and transfer of credit earned by students. "UGC had developed guidelines on CBCS and also the detailed syllabi in consultation with various stakeholders in as many as 109 undergraduate courses as a template which gives a broad framework of uniformity as well as in-built flexibility. All the universities were requested to adopt the CBCS and also revise the curriculum," a communication sent to universities read. "The HRD Ministry has desired to create a database regarding implementation of CBCS and curriculum revision in universities across the country. Hence, you are requested to furnish the details by April 18," it added.

The Uttarakhand High Court today permitted CBSE-affiliated schools in the state to prescribe non-NCERT books if they deem fit but asked them to ensure that they are reasonably priced. In an interim order on a writ petition filed by private schools, publishers and others against the state government's decision making NCERT books mandatory in all CBSE schools, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said the schools may recommend and use books other than NCERT books if they deem fit. However, setting a precondition, the court said the books of private publications prescribed by such schools should not be exorbitantly priced. It also said the books must follow the CBSE syllabus. The court asked private CBSE schools to provide a list of non-NCERT books prescribed by them alongside their prices to the state government and the CBSE.
