The Delhi High Court today sought the stands of the CBSE and the Centre on a plea for court-monitored probe into the paper leak case. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar also asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to apprise it of the Board's plans to hold Maths re-test for the class 10. The court was hearing a plea for a court-monitored probe into the recent leaks of the Maths and Economics CBSE examination papers of class 10 and 12, respectively. The petition by NGO Social Jurist has sought that the class 10 Maths exam be held in April rather than July as proposed by the authorities. The petition filed by advocate Ashok Agarwal has also prayed for liberal marks to the students in the Maths and Economics re-examination.
The CBSE exam started late at few centres in the national capital today as many of them expressed inability to follow the new system of printing encrypted question papers, e-mailed to them, at the school itself. The board officials, however, assured that the students would be given extra time to ensure the delay doesn't cause them any loss. "We received (encrypted) question papers at 10 AM from the bank as CBSE officials gave it late. Papers were distributed at 10.45 AM instead of 10.15 AM," the principal of an East Delhi school said on condition of anonymity. Another school in west Delhi started the board exam late as they received the paper at 10.30 am from bank. A group of SFI activists today vandalised a private school near here alleging that a Class 9 male student committed suicide after school authorities reportedly decided not to promote him to the 10th standard. The SFI activists, who took out a march to the school at Pambady, alleged that Jinto Eapen, who was weak in studies, committed suicide fearing that the school would not promot him to the 10th standard next year, police said. They also alleged that the teachers had spoken to Jinto's parents in this regard. The school authorities however told TV channels that no such decision had been taken. The 14-year-old student allegedly committed suicide by hanging at his residence yesterday. Eapen's parents have not reacted tothe incident. The Shillong campus of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) will soon offer two new foreign language courses within the next three months, Vice Chancellor Prof E Suresh Kumar has announced. The foreign languages to be introduced are Japanese and Mandarin. The Shillong campus is already offering certificate courses in German, Spanish, French and Russian languages, he said. From the next academic session, the Shillong campus would be offering undergraduate degree in all the six foreign languages, he said. The reason for starting Japanese language course is in view of the immediate job market as Japanese companies have already started setting up offices in India, the VC said yesterday. A number of students, who appeared for this year's CBSE class XII examinations, staged a protest here today over question paper leak and re-tests and alleged that the board was jeopardising their careers. The students, numbering around 50 and wearing uniforms of their respective schools, congregated at a Garia locality in the southern part of the city to protest the leak of class 12 economics question paper and the board's decision of re-test.
