Rs.513.5647 Crore funds released for Pre-metric scholarship of ST students from 2014-2015 to 2016-17

Under these schemes, viz., Pre-Matric Scholarship and Post-Matric Scholarship for ST students, the funds are being shared at the ratio of 75:25 between the Centre and State Government / UTs, and 90:10 for the North Eastern States and Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Under the scheme National Fellowship and Scholarship for Higher Education of ST students, funds are released to the Institutes / students, and under NOS scheme, funds are released to Ministry of External Affairs on reimbursement basis.

Chhattisgarh: 56 prisoners sit for exams in district jail

At least 56 prisoners on Sunday sat for a examination in Ramanujganj district jail of Balrampur - Ramanujganj district in Chhattisgarh under 'Rashtravyapi Mahapariksha Abhiyan'."Prisoners are very enthusiastic about the examination. We are thinking of organising such kind of examination campaign in the future," said Jail Superintendent GS Markam.This is the first time that a 'Mahapariksha Abhiyan' has been organised in a district jail.

German foreign minister condemns anti-Semitism at schools

Germany's foreign minister has sharply condemned rising anti-Semitism at schools following a new case at an elementary school in Berlin. Heiko Maas told daily Bild today that, "if a child is threatened in anti-Semitic ways, that's shameful and unbearable. We have to counter any kind of anti-Semitism decisively." Daily paper Berliner Zeitung reported earlier this week that a Jewish girl was abused at a Berlin elementary school by Muslim immigrant children "because she doesn't believe in Allah," and that in the past she had also received death threats. Anti-Semitic incidents at schools across Germany have risen in recent years and led to some Jewish students leaving public schools for private schools. Maas, who is currently on a visit to Israel, is known as a strong advocate of minority rights.

Teachers block NH in Ludhiana, baton-charged

Police today resorted to mild baton charge to thwart a protest by thousands of teachers on the Grand Trunk Road here today. The teachers were protesting in support of their demands, including regularisation of the contractual staff, Didar Singh, a representative of the teachers, said. The teachers blocked vehicular traffic on Ludhiana-Jalandhar national highway for more than an hour. They lifted the sit-in after an assurance from the Ludhiana district administration that Chief Minister Amarinder Singh would meet them on April 2 in Chandigarh. The protest was organised by the Joint Teachers Front. Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal condemned the lathi charge on teachers. In a statement issued in Chandigarh, Badal said the teachers were protesting "because the ruling Congress is refusing to honour its pre-election promise to regularise all 15,000 contractual teachers in the state." Ex-NCERT Director to represent India on UNESCO's Executive Board

The Centre on Sunday announced the nomination of Professor J S Rajput, former Director of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), as India's representative to the Executive Board (EXB) of UNESCO.Professor Rajput, who is known for his contributions in school education and teacher education, has held several assignments which include Professor in NCERT, 1974, Principal of the Regional Institute of Education Bhopal 1977-88, Joint Educational Adviser, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, 1989-94; Chairman, National Council for Teacher Education, NCTE, 1994-99 and the Director of the NCERT, 1999-2004.A Padma Shri recipient, Professor Rajput's association with UNESCO and other international agencies extends over three decades. JK Guv approves scholarship scheme for meritorious students of SMVD College of Nursing

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, chairman of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, have approved a scholarship scheme for BSc Nursing students of SMVD College in Reasi district. This scheme has been introduced to inculcate competitive spirit among the students and provide financial assistance to the meritorious as well as poor students to enable them to pursue the course, an official spokesperson said. This scheme, titled 'Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Nursing Scholarship Scheme', will benefit 24 students, three each under the merit and merit-cum-means categories, year wise for four years. Each selected student will get tuition fee waiver of 100 per cent, 75 per cent and 50 per cent amounting to Rs 40,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000, respectively, in each academic year on the basis of her inter-se merit among the first three positions in the previous two semesters of the 2nd, 3rdand 4th academic years, the spokesperson said. Bill to make learning Telugu compulsory welcomed

BJP and other opposition parties and academicians have welcomed the Telangana government's decision to make Telugu compulsory in schools in the state from academic year 2018-19. The Telangana Legislative Assembly yesterday passed the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Bill, 2018, making teaching and learning Telugu compulsory in all schools from academic year 2018-19. Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Education Kadiam Srihari, who moved the bill, said the government's idea was to protect and promote the language. Telugu shall be taught as a compulsory subject from classes 1 to 10 in all schools, commencing from the academic year 2018-19 in a "phased manner," the bill said. Autonomy in no way a step towards privatisation; will enhance global standing of our institutions: Javadekar

The autonomy being granted to several leading varsities, including Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and others, is in "no way a step towards privatisation of education" or fee-hikes, and the Centre will continue to support these educational institutions like before, HRD minister Prakash Javadekar asserted today. The Union government would continue to fund the salaries of the faculty as well as provide other grants, Javadekar told PTI adding that greater autonomy essentially meant an enhanced global stature and a greater freedom to undertake fresh academic initiatives. "The autonomy being granted to JNU and others is in no way a step towards privatisation of education as is being suggested by some quarters," the HRD minister said. In a bid to spruce up the qualitative assessment of educational institutions, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has made it mandatory for the institutes to furnish all the information about them online. It has also provided for the first time a questionnaire aimed at satisfying the concerns of the students and their guardians in assessment and evaluation of institutions. In an Interview to PTI Bhasha, the NAAC Executive Council president, Virendra S Chauhan said, We have given due importance to the satisfaction of students and their guardians for the first time in the process of evaluation of the academic institutions. Chittorgarh: Six children injured after school bus overturns

At least six children were injured after a school bus turned turtle in Chittorgarh."School bus of Lotus Public School, Kanera turned turtle in Palcha. Out of the 30 children on board, 10 were injured and they are under treatment. The driver was also injured," Chittorgarh Sub-Divisional Officer Suresh Kumar Khatik said.Last year, 32 people died and seven others were injured after a bus fell into a river in Sawai Madhopur's Dubi area.

UP Dy CM forms teams to curb cheating during exams

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma today said he has formed district-level teams to curb cheating during ongoing examinations of a state-run university. The B R Ambedkar University, Agra, has examination centres in several districts of the state, including Mathura and Aligarh. At an assessment meeting here, Sharma said officers of the university would coordinate with DMs and senior police officials of the districts where the examination centres are located. He said strong action would be taken against the varsity-affiliated colleges from where incidents of cheating are reported.

TL assembly passes bill to make learning Telugu compulsory

The Telangana Legislative Assembly today passed a bill making teaching and learning Telugu compulsory in the state. The Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, 2018 was supported by all parties, including BJP, TDP, AIMIM and CPI(M). Telugu shall be taught as a compulsory subject from Classes 1 to 10/Standard I to X in all schools, commencing from the academic year, 2018-19 "in a phased manner", according to the Act. The schools affiliated to CBSE or ICSE or IB or Cambridge Boards in Telangana shall implement the Telugu language as provided in the Act, it said. "Telugu language shall be,- (a) at school level,- (i) acompulsory subject from Standard I to Standard X; (ii) introduced at Standard I in Primary Schools and Standard VI in the High Schools from the Academic Year 2018-19 and shall be extended for further classes progressively as specified in the Schedule," it said.
