40% population doesn't have access to education in their language: Unesco

Forty per cent of the global population does not have access to education in a language they speak or understand, according to UNESCO's Global Education Monitoring (GEM) team. Despite countries' growing understanding of the role of home language, policy uptake remains limited. Implementation challenges include limited teacher capacity to use home languages, unavailability of materials in home languages and community opposition, it said. In some low- and middle-income countries, this figure rises to 90 per cent. More than a quarter of a billion learners are affected, GEM officials said, recommending nations to implement multilingual education policies and practices with the goal of creating educational systems that benefit all learners. Crackdown on reviewers: Naac axes a fifth of assessors over irregularities

NAAC has axed a fifth of its assessors in a crackdown on reviewers who did not meet its required quality standards, officials said on Thursday. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has also hired more than 1,000 new reviewers based on recommendations of a committee that included vice-chancellors of several universities. Under fire over alleged irregularities in assessments, NAAC has also halted physical inspection of colleges and moved the process completely online. NAAC is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission in 1994 to systematically assess and accredit the higher educational institutions (HEIs), with the objective of quality assurance and improvement in the quality of education. According to the officials, NAAC had more than 7,000 assessors who were responsible for evaluating HEIs in the course of grading the institutions. "Different regions had a different set of assessors, sometimes they had to travel to other parts as well. .

Now, a unique community loan system designed to empower rural women has not only provided her with an escape from the debt trap but also a way to secure her family's future. Women in Bihar who once struggled to make ends meet are now growing strawberries, building homes and investing in their children's education through SHG Plus -- an evolution of the traditional self-help group (SHG) model that is designed to empower rural women through financial inclusion, transparency and collective strength. The system's evolution was dreamed up by the women themselves. The model was developed with help from the Aga Khan Rural Support Programme India.
