Election year reveals deep dissatisfaction among voters in democracies

In a community centre in East London, about 20 men gathered for their regular lunch meeting, sipping coffee and tea from mismatched mugs and engaging in an increasingly popular pastime in the world's democracies: Complaining about their government. They feel estranged from the country's leadership its wealthy prime minister and their members of parliament. It feels like you are second-class people. Our MPs don't represent us people. Political leaders don't understand what we go through, said Barrie Stradling, 65. Do they listen to people? I don't think they do.' In a coffee shop in Jakarta, Ni Wayan Suryatini, 46, bemoaned the results of the recent election, in which the son of Indonesia's former president ascended to the country's vice presidency and the opposition parties seemed to do little to stop him. It is difficult to trust them since they only want to reach their goals. As long as they achieve their goals, they will forget everything else, Suryatini said of politicians. A

Two jailed candidates won Lok Sabha polls; how will they take oath?

The victory of two candidates who are in jail on terror charges has brought up a unique situation. While the law will keep them away from attending proceedings of the 18th Lok Sabha, they also have a Constitutional right to take oath as members. In the results declared by the Election Commission on Tuesday, jailed Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh has won from the Khadoor Sahib seat, while incarcerated Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, emerged victorious from the Baramulla constituency. Engineer Rashid has been lodged in the Tihar jail since August 9, 2019 on charges of alleged terror financing, while Singh has been booked under the National Security Act and sent to the Dibrugarh jail of Assam. Now the question arises, can these jailed candidates be allowed to take oath, and if yes what is the process involved? Explaining the legalities involved, Constitution expert and former Lok Sabha secretary general PDT Achari emphasised the importance of following the Constitutio

LS elections: Majority of royal family candidates register big victories

Descendants of the royal families, who contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on BJP tickets, performed fairly well on Tuesday with a majority of them leading with a huge margin on their respective seats, according to the Election Commission data. Jyotiraditya Scindia, the scion of the erstwhile royal family of Gwalior who severed his 18-year-long ties with the Congress in 2020 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), defeated the Congress' Rao Yadvendra Singh by 5,40,929 votes in the Guna parliamentary constituency in Madhya Pradesh. This is the first time in his political career that Scindia (53) contested as a BJP candidate from Guna, which was earlier represented by the Union civil aviation minister's late father Madhavrao Scindia and late grandmother Vijayaraje Scindia. The BJP made a clean sweep in Madhya Pradesh by securing decent vote margins on all 29 seats. In Rajasthan, Dushyant Singh, Prince of Dholpur state, who has been elected four times in the past, won from the

Poll result doesn't reflect unanimous thoughts of people: AIADMK chief

The Lok Sabha election results do not fully reflect the unanimous thinking of the people but have come out in favour of "those who wield authority and money power and undertook a false campaign", AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said on Tuesday. Playing down the party's poll debacle, he said the election results have been on expected lines in favour of those who wield authority. "The election results will not discourage us. We have learnt a lesson on how to face the 2026 assembly elections. We will ensure a huge victory in the 2026 assembly polls," Palaniswami said in a statement here. The former chief minister expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people who voted for the AIADMK candidates and its allies. The party would draw inspiration from its leaders, especially former chief minister M G Ramachandran, and strive for victory in the future, he said.
