US Muslim art, cultural projects receive $2.3M in grants T
A foundation has awarded USD 2.3 million to projects including documentaries on Muslim veterans, Arabic theater productions and a look at Michigan's "Halal Metropolis." The New York-based Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art today announced that 15 groups were selected from about 200 applicants across the United States for its Building Bridges Program . They received grants ranging from USD 50,000 to USD 300,000 for projects that aim to boost relationships among Muslims and their non-Muslim neighbours. Recipients include Kartemquin Films for making short-format documentaries about post-9/11 US Muslim veterans and the Cleveland Public Theatre, which is creating a permanent ensemble dedicated to Arabic-language productions. Another goes to University of Michigan-Dearborn's Center for Arab American Studies to expand "Halal Metropolis." It's a three-year project exploring how Muslim culture has enriched southeastern Michigan.

More than two dozen additional women have come forward with sexual misconduct allegations against former CBS News anchor Charlie Rose, and the Washington Post says that on least three occasions, managers were alerted about his questionable behaviour. Rose was fired as "CBS This Morning" anchor and his PBS interview show cancelled after the Post reported in November about women who said Rose groped them, made lewd remarks or walked around naked in their presence. In a story published today, the Post said it had found 27 more women who said Rose harassed them. CBS News' top managers have said they were unaware of Rose's behaviour until last November, and are working to create a safe environment. The Post says Rose told the newspaper that its story was inaccurate and unfair.

Saudi Arabia opened its second movie theatre this week with tickets expected to go on sale to the public this weekend. The Vox Cinemas movie theatre in the capital, Riyadh, has four screens, including an IMAX screen and a special theatre for kids. VOX Cinemas is owned by Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim, a major regional developer of malls and movie theaters.
