Fiction, thriller and Christmas release more likely to be bestseller: study

Books that are fiction, thrillers or mysteries, have high initial sales numbers and are released around Christmas are more likely to be bestsellers, according to a study. Researchers from Northeastern University in the US used a big data approach to investigate what makes a book successful. By evaluating data from the New York Times Bestseller Lists from 2008 to 2016, they developed a formula to predict if a book would be a bestseller. They found that general fiction and biographies were more likely to make the bestseller list more often than other genres. Those with a higher initial place on the list were more likely to stay on it for a longer amount of time, researchers said. "The most surprising result was that we found a universal pattern to book sales: all hardcover bestsellers, regardless of genre, follow a sales trajectory governed by the same factors," said Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, a professor at Northeastern University. Decision on Salman Khan's bail plea on Saturday

A decision on the bail appeal filed by Bollywood actor Salman Khan in Jodhpur Sessions Court will be announced on Friday, his counsel said.The actor had on Thursday appealed for a bail following his conviction in the 20-year-old case of blackbuck poaching during the shooting of his movie 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.Salman Khan was sentenced to five years in prison and other accused - Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam - were acquitted in the case filed in October 1998.Meanwhile, the actor's Counsel Mahesh Bora said he got threatening SMSes and calls against appearing in the bail hearing scheduled for Friday."Yesterday (Thursday), I got threatening SMSes and internet calls warning me not to appear for Salman Khan in the bail hearing today (Friday)," Bora said.A Jodhpur court had on Thursday held the actor guilty of killing two blackbucks in Kankani village near Jodhpur on October 1-2 night in 1998.

Josh Charles to make Broadway debut with 'Straight White Men'

"The Good Wife" star Josh Charles is set to make his Broadway debut in the Second Stage Theatre production of Young Jean Lee's "Straight White Men". Tony winner Anna D Shapiro will direct the play, which marks the first work by an Asian-American female playwright produced on Broadway, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The play takes place at Christmas, when three adult sons gather in the home of their widowed father to sit around in holiday pajamas, eat Chinese takeout and wrestle with their respective identities, until one of them upsets the balance by rejecting the expectations his family and society have placed on him. Also joining previously announced stars Armie Hammer and Tom Skerritt are performance artistes Kate Bornstein and Ty Defoe. Skerritt will play the father, Ed, with Charles as hotshot banker Jake and Hammer as award-winning fiction writer Drew. Casting of the remaining key role of their underachieving elder brother Matt is yet to be announced.

Karl Urban to star in superhero drama series 'The Boys'

"Star Trek" actor Karl Urban is returning to the small screen with Amazon Studios' superhero drama series "The Boys". According to the Hollywood Reporter, "The Boys" takes places in a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, and centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as "the boys" who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue-collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty. Urban will play Billy Butcher, who is described as mysterious and brutal with a personal but secret agenda. "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke will serve as creator and showrunner on "The Boys", which will be directed by Seth Rogen and his longtime producing partner Evan Goldberg. A premiere date for "The Boys" is yet to be announced.

Jake Gyllenhaal to produce and star in 'Welcome to Vienna'

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal is set to produce and star in the thriller "Welcome to Vienna" for Focus Features. The project is based on the Kevin Wignall novel "To Die in Vienna," which will be published in June by Thomas & Mercer, reported Deadline. Gyllenhaal will play a Vienna-based civilian surveillance contractor for hire who is tracking a Chinese scientist. He interrupts a break-in at his apartment and the intruder escapes, but then comes back and tries to kill him leading the contractor to believe that the CIA may be trying to kill him. Gyllenhaal will produce through his production company Nine Stories alongside Riva Marker.

Tom Hanks' war drama 'Greyhound' to release in 2019

Hollywood star Tom Hanks' war drama "Greyhound" will hit the screens on April 5, 2019. The Sony Pictures film, which stars Hanks, is based on C.S. Forester's novel "The Good Shepherd." Aaron Schneider is directing from Hanks' script, reported Variety. "Greyhound" is currently filming in Baton Rouge, Los Angeles. It is set in the early days of World War II as an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by Hanks' Captain Ernest Krause, crosses the treacherous North Atlantic while being hotly pursued by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats. Sony Pictures has also set "Grudge reboot for an August 16, 2019 release. Directed by Nicolas Pesce, the film is a re-imagining of the supernatural thriller, for Ghost House and Good Universe. "Grudge" will begin shooting in May.

'Hidden Figures' series in works at Nat Geo

Nat Geo has put in development a potential series inspired by the Oscar-nominated film "Hidden Figures". The Theodore Melfi-directed historical film tells the untold true story of three brilliant African-American women working at NASA who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history. Based on Margot Lee Shetterly's book "Hidden Figures: The Story of the African-American Women Who Helped Win the Space Race", the film stars Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae as Katherine G Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson, respectively, who performed work that was crucial to American success in the space race and most impactfully, in the successful 1969 Apollo moon landing. "Solo: A Star Wars Story" will make its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. According to Variety, the Lucasfilm origin story will premiere in a special screeninGg on May 15, before the film makes its global premiere on May 25. The Ron Howard-directed origin story stars Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo, the role made famous by Harrison Ford. Donald Glover plays Lando Calrissian, and "Game of Thrones" star Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany and Thandie Newton also star. "Solo" is the second anthology film following 2016's "Rogue One," which made more than USD 1 billion at the global box office. In the past, "Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones" (2002) and "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith" (2005) both played out of competition. Opening the festival is two-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Asghar Farhadi's psychological thriller "Everybody Knows," starring Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, and Ricardo Darin. Blackbuck case: Jodhpur Court to hear Salman's bail plea today

The Jodhpur Session Court on Friday will hear the bail application of Bollywood actor Salman Khan, in connection with the 1998 black buck poaching case.Pronouncing the verdict in the two-decade-old case, the court yesterday convicted the actor and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment, while other accused in the case - Tabu, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam - were acquitted.A penalty of Rs. 10,000 was also levied on him.The actor is accused of killing two blackbucks in the Kankani village near Jodhpur in 1998 during the shooting of the film 'Hum Saath Saath Hain'.He was charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act and others under Section 51 read with Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.
