Gap between mainstream, festival genre films reducing: Shoojit
The disparity between films in the mainstream genre and those meant for screenings in the festival circuit is coming down, feels director Shoojit Sircar. To a question, Sircar told reporters at the just-concluded 24th Kolkata International Film Festival that there was inconsistency between films meant for the two genres, but it is reducing as the song and dance routine in Bollywood films is now a "thing of the past". "I think going by my recent experiences, the disparity (between the two genres) has come down to a great extent. You consider films like 'Masaan' (2015) or 'The Lunchbox' (2013). Singer Chinmayi Sripaada says she has been removed from TN artiste's dubbing union
Noted playback signer Chinmayi Sripaada, who recently accused Tamil lyricist Vairamuthu of sexual harassment, has said she has been removed from a dubbing artiste's union and indicated she may no longer be able to lend her voice to actors in Tamil films. In a series of tweets, she said the Tamil Nadu Dubbing Artiste's Union has informed her that she has been removed for non-payment of membership fee for past two years. "So given to understand that I have been terminated from the dubbing union. Which means I can no longer dub in Tamil films henceforth. The reason stated is that I haven't paid subscription fee for two years..," Chinmayi said in a tweet. "According to Tamil Film Industry rules if you are not a member of the dubbing union they wont allow you to work. Kristin Scott Thomas says taking on direction turned out to be a frustrating exercise for her. The 58-year-old actor, who stepped into director's shoes with "The Sea Change", says her move into directing "became a bit of a joke" for others. "It's very, very frustrating. You have to have nerves of steel. (It took so long that it) became a bit of a joke 'Kristin's directing this film,' ha ha. It's a life's work," Thomas said, according to FemaleFirst. "The Sea of Change" is adapted from Elizabeth Jane Howard's novel of the same name. History was made, as late Hollywood actor Marilyn Monroe's 1961 Golden Globe Award sold for USD 250,000 (Rs 1.79 crore).It became the only Golden globe in the world to be sold off at a hefty price during an auction, reported The Hollywood Reporter.Monroe's 1956 Raven Black Ford Thunderbird was sold at an astounding USD 490,000 (Rs 3.51 crore). Other items previously in possession of Monroe that were auctioned off are- a black satin blouse with matching necktie that she wore in 1956, which was sold off at USD 43,750 (Rs 31.40 lakh).Apart from Monroe, items that belonged to Stan Lee, who died on Monday, were auctioned off too. Joe Perry discharged from hospital
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry has been discharged from hospital after a week-long stay and is recuperating at home. Last week, the iconic musician was rushed to the hospital after his performance with Billy Joel at New York's Madison Square Garden. The 68-year-old rocker "was released from the hospital and is home and doing well," his representative Marcee Rondan told USA Today. Perry had experienced "shortness of breath" and collapsed after returning to his dressing room post the gig. Veteran film and theatre actor Nafisa Ali revealed she has been recently diagnosed with stage three cancer. She made the revelation Saturday via Instagram on which she shared a picture of her with good friend and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi, who paid her a visit post the diagnosis. "Just met my precious friend who wished me luck and to get well from my just diagnosed stage 3 cancer," Ali, 61, captioned the photograph. Born in West Bengal, Nafisa made her acting debut in 1979 with Shashi Kapoor's "Junoon". Her other acting credits include "Major Saab", "Life In a Metro", "Yamla Pagla Deewana" and "Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3". Ali is currently a member of the Congress party. John Williams pens new original score for Star Wars Land
Veteran music composer John Williams has scored the new original theme for Disney's upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge theme park land. According to Billboard, Disney released a teaser of the music, titled "Theme from Star Wars Galaxy's Edge" on Saturday. The footage features The London Symphony Orchestra recording the theme in a studio as well as some of the park's attractions under construction. Galaxy's Edge is slated to throw its gates open in the summer of 2019 at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida will host fans next autumn.
14th edition of children's festival begins
The 14th edition of international children's theatre festival, 'JashneBachpan', was inaugurated here Saturday evening with folk dance performances from Assam, Rajasthan, Punjab, Manipur among other states. Organised by the National School of Drama (NSD), the opening ceremony of the theatre festival saw "Udaan", an act comprising of four presentations by groups -- Thangata Pung Cholam (Manipur), Kalboliya (Rajasthan), Gotipua (Odisha) and Bhangra/folksong (Punjab). Speaking at the event, Arun Goel, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, said that festivals like "JashneBachchan help children to develop their personality". "Theatre is something which is not given to us by the colonial powers, rather it is our own art form which was born in our own land and has been practised since ages," Goel said. The nine-day theatre festival will see performances from Switzerland, Sri Lanka and Indonesia along with their Indian counterparts here.
