Pak captures 15 fishermen off Gujarat coast

At least 15 fishermen from Gujarat were apprehended early Wednesday by the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) near the international maritime boundary in Arabian sea, the second such incident in the last five days, officials said. The PMSA also seized three fishing boats during the operation, said officials of the Porbandar-based National Fishworkers' Forum (NFF). "The seized boats, which were registered at Porbandar, had set sails a few days back," NFF Secretary Manish Lodhari said, adding that PMSA apprehended the fishermen near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) off the Gujarat coast. On January 4, five fishermen from Porbandar were apprehended by PMSA claiming that they have crossed the IMBL. The IMBL jurisdiction is a contentious issue between India and Pakistan. Fishermen from both the countries eyeing big catch often stray across the line.

Liu Yongtan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) from the Harbin Institute of Technology, is credited to have upgraded the China's radar technology and developing an advanced compact size radar for the PLA Navy's carrier fleet to "maintain constant surveillance over an area the size of India," the Post reported. How locusts switch colours in different settings found

Scientists have discovered how locusts change their body colour to adapt to different environments. The findings, published in the journal eLife, reveal a novel 'palette effect' mechanism in locusts, whereby a red pigment complex acts as a switch to coordinate between the insects' green and black colouring. Changes in body colour are important for many animals to adapt and survive in changing environments. In the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, solitary insects living in low population numbers typically display a green colour, while more sociable (or 'gregarious') locusts living in larger swarms develop a striking pattern of black/brown colouring. However, the molecular mechanism underlying these colour changes was largely unknown. "The green colour of solitary locusts is likely due to a combination of yellow and blue pigments, helping to camouflage the insects among plants as protection from predators," said Le Kang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, ...

Guj: Lioness drowns in open well in Gir forest

A lioness drowned in an open well in in Gujarat's Gir-Somnath district, 400 kilometres from here, Forest department officials said Tuesday. The incident took place in Pandva village, around 40 kilometres away from the outer limits of the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, in Veraval taluka and the carcass of the lioness was retrieved Tuesday and sent for post mortem, said Deputy Conservator of Forest Junagadh Division Sunil Berwal. Berwal said the bloated condition of the carcass suggests it may have fallen into the well a day prior. He ruled out foul play and said it was possible that the lioness fell into the open well while chasing prey. "Since the lioness tried to stay afloat, which was evident from her brushed nails, we can say that it was not killed and then thrown into the well. It appears to be an accident, not foul play," said Berwal.
