Canada, Japan up India bet, investors double equity holdings in past year

India's long-term growth potential and politically stable environment is leading more geographies to raise their bets on the country. Canada, which has historically not been a big investor in Indian equities, has seen its equity holding in listed Indian shares double in the past year and grow by more than 100 times in the past eight years. The country is now the seventh largest investor in the country, and stands a good chance of overtaking Norway, UK and Luxemborg to enter the top five league. The country's holdings stood at Rs 17,500 crore at the end of June 2017 from Rs 8,541 crore a year ago, data collated from Prime Database shows. Its holding amounted to a mere Rs 150 crore in 2009. The equity holding data collected by Prime Database is for investors holding at least one per cent stake in listed companies. The benchmark BSE Sensex has risen 14.5 per cent in the one year to June, and doubled in the past eight years. India is seen as a bright spot among emerging markets, and its ..

Stay invested in equities over the long term for better returns

We have all heard it said that while equities are volatile, they have the potential to boost portfolio returns over the long run. We decided to check the truth in this statement by creating three portfolios, with varied levels of equities. We used indices to create portfolios and kept the investment horizon at 15 years. The indices included are Nifty 50, an index of large-cap stocks; the S&P 500 IDX, an index made up of large- and mid-cap stocks; MSCI World NR, an index representing international stocks; and Crisil Composite Bond Fund IX, an index composed of debt and gold. The first portfolio has an equity allocation of 65 per cent, the second has 55 per cent, and the third, 45 per cent. The portfolio allocation with 65 per cent equity allocation garnered the highest return of 14.1 per cent, while the one with 45 per cent had the lowest return of 12.6 per cent.

February blues for equities

The Indian market might be headed for its worst monthly drop since November 2011. In February, the benchmark Sensex is down eight per cent in dollar terms and seven per cent in rupee terms. Only Ukraine has fared worse than India among major emerging markets. The Sensex's poor performance this month follows a five per cent drop in January. Foreign investors have continued to pull money out of the Indian markets. Outflows from domestic equities are one of the highest in the emerging market region.Overweight position of foreign investors and India's valuation premium to other markets have made the Indian market vulnerable to sharp sell-off, say experts. So far in 2016, Indian markets declined 15 per cent in dollar terms, with key sectoral indices such as banking and realty falling around 20 per cent each.
