First baby born via uterus transplanted from dead donor

In a medical first, a mother who received a uterus transplant from a dead donor gave birth to a healthy baby, researchers reported Wednesday. The breakthrough operation, performed two years ago in Brazil, shows that such transplants are feasible and could help thousands of women unable to have children due to uterine problems, according to a study published in The Lancet medical journal. The baby girl was born in September 2016 in Sao Paolo. Until recently, the only options available to women with so-called uterine infertility were adoption or the services of a surrogate mother. The first successful childbirth following uterine transplant from a living donor took place in 2013 in Sweden, and there have been 10 others since then. But there are far more women in need of transplants than there are potential live donors, so doctors wanted to find out if the procedure could work using the uterus of a woman who had died. Ten attempts were made -- in the United States, the Czech Republic, ...

Plea in HC against restriction on terminating over 20-week pregnancy

A plea was moved in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday challenging the constitutional validity of a law that prevents abortion of foetus that is more than 20 weeks old, except where the mother's life is at risk. The petition was moved by a 22-year-old woman who has sought termination of her over 22-week pregnancy on the grounds that the foetus was not viable as it has severe deformities and carrying it would also affect her physical as well as mental health. She has challenged the restriction on abortion in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, contending that it does not provide for severe fetal abnormalities discovered late in pregnancy and the physical and mental health of a pregnant woman. A bench of justices S Ravindra Bhat and Prateek Jalan on Tuesday set up a medical board of doctors, that includes a psychiatrist, from AIIMS to assess the viability and condition of the foetus and also the woman's mental health in view of the complication in her pregnancy. Chemicals in cosmetics, soaps may speed up puberty in girls: Study

Girls exposed to chemicals commonly found in toothpaste, makeup, soap and other personal care products before birth may hit puberty earlier, according to a study published Tuesday. Researchers from the University of California (UC) Berkeley in the US found that daughters of mothers who had higher levels of diethyl phthalate and triclosan in their bodies during pregnancy experienced puberty at younger ages. The results, published in the journal Human Reproduction, came from data collected as part of the US Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children of Salinas (CHAMACOS) study, which followed 338 children from before birth to adolescence. Diethyl phthalate is often used as a stabiliser in fragrances and cosmetics. The antimicrobial agent triclosan -- which the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned from use in hand soap in 2017 because it was shown to be ineffective -- is still used in some toothpastes, researchers said. "We know that some of the things we put on our

Genes tied to dementia identified, may lead to new therapies

Scientists have identified genetic processes involved in the neurodegeneration that occurs in dementia -- an important step towards developing therapies that could slow or halt the course of the disease. Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US discovered two major groups of genes involved in mutations that result in an overproduction of a protein called tau, a hallmark of the progressive loss of neurons seen in major forms of dementia. The study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, was largely done in mouse models of dementia, although the researchers performed additional experiments that indicated the same genetic process occurs in human brains. The team searched a large database of the genetic effects of experimental drugs to identify those that might alter this loss of neurons, or neurodegeneration. In human cell cultures, the researchers showed that the use of these molecules interfered with neurodegeneration. "Our study is the most ...

Tooth loss linked to high BP in older women

A recent study was conducted to find if there is any relationship between periodontal disease and tooth loss with hypertension. The findings, which appear in the American Journal of Hypertension, suggest that older women who suffer tooth loss are more likely to develop high blood pressure (BP).The study observed a positive association between tooth loss and hypertension risk among postmenopausal women. Specifically, these women had approximately 20 percent higher risk of developing hypertension during follow-up compared to other women. The association was stronger among younger women and those with lower BMI.There are several possible reasons for the observed association. One possible explanation is that as people lose teeth, they may change their diets to softer and more processed foods. These changes in dietary patterns could be associated with higher risk of hypertension. There was no association found between periodontal disease and hypertension. The study suggests that older ...
