Pregnant women at the age of 40 and above are at an increased risk of delivering preterm babies, a study warns. Maternal age at pregnancy has been increasing worldwide and so has the risk for preterm birth. However, the association between maternal age and preterm birth remains a topic of ongoing research. For the study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers from CHU Sainte-Justine in Canada analysed data from 32 hospitals, from 2008 to 2011. They identified five different age groups among the 165,282 pregnancies included in the study, and compared them based on maternal characteristics, gestational and obstetric complications, and risk factors for prematurity. Some of the known risk factors identified more commonly in older mothers (40 and over) included placental praevia, gestational diabetes, medical history, use of assisted reproduction technologies and occurrence of an invasive procedure. Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das today said that the state government is constructing houses for leprosy patients. A total four hundred houses are being built in Jamshedpur and soon houses would be built for them in Ranchi and Dhanbad, an official release said quoting Das. A programme is being prepared for 1300 leprosy patients, who are unable to work, Das said, adding their children would be trained in skill development and would be connected with job. As the Union government came out with its budget proposals today, the Delhi High Court remarked that investment on health care by the Centre was "minimal" leading to "overworked" and fewer doctors in state-run facilities. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar made the observations while hearing PILs on the issue of rise in violent attacks on doctors in government hospitals here. The court observed that due to their insufficient numbers, the doctors were "overworked", as a result of which they were not able to provide equal attention to all their patients. "Only 0.3 per cent of the GDP (gross domestic product) was spent on health care. Government investment on health and education is minimal," the bench said and added that this is one of the reasons behind many doctors going abroad to practice.
