Heavy rain continues in parts of Rajasthan with Ajmer wettest, alert issued

Moderate to heavy rain continued to take place Rajasthan on Wednesday, with Bhinay in Ajmer recording the highest precipitation over a day. The central Rajasthan town received 92 mm of rain in 24 hours, till 8.30 am on Wednesday. Surot in Karauli recorded 65 mm and Lalot in Dausa received 57 mm of rain during this period, according to the Met department. Many other places in the state recorded below 57 mm of rain, the Met said. The department has issued an alert for very heavy rainfall in Jaipur, Jhunjhunu, Sikar, and Nagaur districts and for heavy rainfall in Ajmer, Alwar, Dausa, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, Bikaner, Churu, Jodhpur, and Pali districts for Wednesday.

Elephant census delayed in northeast; final count likely in June 2025

India will have to wait until June next year for the results of the latest elephant census, as the population estimation has been delayed in some northeastern states, sources said. Wild elephants are found in forested, hilly tracts across four regions of India: the foothills of the Himalayas in the north, the northeastern states, east-central India, and the Western and Eastern Ghats in the southern parts of the country. A source told PTI that data collection and analysis from the northeast have not yet been completed. The primary reasons for the delay in the region are "heavy monsoon rains, floods and the limited capacity" of the forest staff, the sources added. The entire process involves creating shapefiles, capacity building, data collection, and data processing. Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Monday said that the state has recorded 58 deaths and crop damage in 80,000 hectares, due to "above normal" rains so far in the current monsoon season so far. 84% of Indian districts at risk of heatwaves, 70% prone to extreme rainfall

Over 84 per cent of Indian districts are prone to extreme heat waves and 70 per cent of those are witnessing increased frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events, a study by IPE-Global and GIS company Esri India said on Tuesday. Kedarnath rescue ops continue, 400 people to be airlifted from Lincholi

Over 370 people, including devotees and locals stranded on the rain-ravaged trek route to Kedarnath, have been evacuated and sent to Lincholi to be airlifted as the rescue operation entered its fourth day.
