The minister also said that existing laws were not strong enough to tackle the nuisance created by hawkers on the beaches in the state "I still say we don't want tourists who arrive here and create nuisance and do not respect our culture. We don't want them if they litter on the beaches or do drugs," he said during the Question Hour. The minister said tourists often created nuisance on the streets after getting drunk. Work on India's public sector hotel run entirely by women for women, claimed to be the first such in the country, was launched here today by state Tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran. A flagship project of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC), the hotel named 'Hostess' will come up within six months at the KTDC complex at the main bus station in the heart of the city, adjacent to the central railway station. The project was a 'milestone initiative' of KTDC, considering its purpose, security features and facilities of global standards at affordable rates, the minister said. "There are many services being offered by KTDC which are affordable to common people and facilities at 'Hostess' at economic rates are expected to be of global standards," he said. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has set a target of planting nearly 10 lakh saplings during the ongoing monsoon season across various green spaces of the national capital including parks and the Yamuna flood plains, the urban body today said. Several big parks, green belts, bio-diversity parks and the Yamuna flood plains fall under the jurisdiction of the DDA, which has planted 1.6 lakh saplings so far, it said in a statement. "Large-scale plantation, i.e. nearly 10 lakh saplings will be planted during this monsoon season in various parks, green belts, (on the) roadside, bio-diversity parks and the Yamuna flood plains," it said. Some of the DDA parks having rich green cover include Japanese Park in Rohini, Coronation Park in Burari and Astha Kunj Park in south Delhi.

The Ministry of Tourism has identified 17 sites in 12 clusters in the country for development under the Iconic Tourist Sites Development Project, Minister K J Alphons said today in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. A young Indian-origin senior economist working with the World Bank drowned after strong currents pulled her away while she was swimming in a restricted area at a beach in Bali, the Indonesian media reported. The beach lifeguard tried to save the 37-year-old Aakansha Pande, who resided in Singapore, and took her to Siloam Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, The Jakarta Post reported. Pande, a US citizen, was Senior Health Economist at the World Bank where she focused on countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). She died after being swept away by strong waves while swimming in the evening at the beach in front of Double Six Hotel in Seminyak, Bali, on Saturday, the report said. Quoting lifeguard officials, it said before the incident, Pande had been warned twice by the beach lifeguard as she was swimming in an area where swimming was banned due to strong currents.
