Railways to go vegetarian on Gandhi Jayanti

The Indian Railway Board proposed to mark the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti as a 'Vegetarian Day', suggesting that it will not include non-vegetarian items in the meals served on that day.The Railway Board has planned that no non-vegetarian food will be served to passengers on railway premises on October 2 in 2018, 2019 and 2020.The proposal also included a 'Swachhta Express' for Sabarmati and adjoining stations.The board has also proposed for Mahatma Gandhi watermarked tickets.The board has approached the Ministry of Culture, headed by Bharatiya Janata party's Mahesh Sharma for approval of the said proposals.Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani had initiated a similar exercise in July 2017, when he was the Chairman and Managing Director of Air India, wherein it was announced that coach passengers on its domestic flights would only be offered vegetarian meals.

Macedonian climber dies on Everest

A Macedonian climber died today while making a final push for the summit of Mount Everest, the latest fatality of the current spring climbing season in the Nepali Himalayas. The 62-year-old collapsed above Camp Three at 7,200 metres. "Our team at the base camp confirms his death," Iswari Poudel of Himalayan Guides Nepal, his expedition organiser, told AFP. Local media reported that the climber died of a cardiac arrest. It was the fourth death of the season. Last week a solo Russian climber died of altitude problems just below the summit of Lhotse, the world's fourth highest peak that borders Everest. A sherpa guide is presumed dead after he went missing on his descent from the summit of Everest. An Italian climber died last month on Mount Dhaulagiri, the world's seventh highest peak. NDMC seals 'Masala Library' in CP for violating building bye-laws

Masala Library, an up-market restaurant in the heart of the national capital, has been sealed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) for violating building bye-laws. The restaurant has been sealed for making unauthorised constructions, a senior NDMC official told PTI. Masala Library by Jiggs Kalra, a food columnist and author, is located at Janpath. The city's who's who, from top bureaucrats to celebrities, used to dine at the restaurant, whose specialities included a 19-course meal. 'Victoria eyes 10-15% growth in footfalls from India in 2018'

Victoria, the south-eastern state of Australia, is expecting 10-15 per cent rise in Indian tourist arrivals to 1.58-1.65 lakh this year, an Australian tourism firm has said. "We continued to witness strong growth in overall tourist arrivals in 2017 with 2.9 million travellers visiting Victoria. Of this, India recorded the strongest growth with 1,44,200 tourist arrivals last year, a growth of 22.6 per cent over 2016," Visit Victoria Head of International Markets Carmen Smith told PTI here. The recently introduced e-visa facilities for Indians have further boosted tourist arrivals from India, she added. Smith said, looking at the current trend this year since January, we expect to welcome more Indians. Kerala eyes up to 15 pc growth in tourist arrivals in 2018

Kerala is targeting up to 15 per cent growth in number of tourist arrivals in 2018 as it undertakes a slew of initiatives to hard sell the state as a preferred tourist destination, a senior government official said. Kerala witnessed overall growth of 10.94 per cent in number of tourist arrivals to the state in 2017. Domestic tourists rose by 11.39 per cent, while the number of foreign tourists rose by 5.1 per cent for the year. "We are looking at an overall growth of up to 15 per cent in total number of tourist arrivals to the state in 2018. We are looking at a growth of 15 per cent rise in domestic tourists and 10 per cent rise in foreign tourist arrivals," Kerala Tourism Director P Balakiran told PTI. Navy bikers' expedition to spread coastal security awareness flagged off

The fifth and final leg of the 600 km long motorcycle expedition organised by Indian Navy as part of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Western Naval Command was flagged off from Visakhapatnam.The expedition was flagged off by Rear Admiral Mahesh Singh NM, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) Eastern Naval Command, from here on Friday.Twenty Naval Officers including women officers with 10 motorcycles are participating in the expedition which is aimed at highlighting the importance and spreading awareness on coastal security along the coast.The expedition is divided into five legs.The first leg of the expedition was flagged off in Mumbai on May 5 and would conclude in Kolkata on May 21. Four officers are riding the entire length from Mumbai to Kolkata while remaining are participating in various legsDuring the ride, the naval personnel will be sensitising the local population regarding importance of security and how they could contribute towards the same.

Solo Russian climber dies on 4th highest mountain

A Russian climber died just below the summit of Lhotse, the world's fourth highest peak, in at least the third fatality of the spring climbing season in the Nepali Himalaya, officials said today. Rustem Amirov was alone on the 8,516 metre (27,940 feet) mountain, which neighbours Mount Everest, when he died of altitude related complications on Thursday. "He was climbing solo without any guides with him. The body has not been brought down to the base camp yet," Gyanendra Shrestha, a government liaison officer at Everest base camp, told AFP. Climbers attempting Lhotse use the same base camp as those aiming for Everest's summit. They follow the same route up the mountain, scaling the sheer Lhotse Face -- a 1,125 metre wall of ice -- before the path to the neighbouring summits divides. Amirov, an experienced climber who had previously led an expedition on the 8,201 metre Cho Oyu peak -- also in the Nepali Himalaya -- only arrived at Everest base camp in early May, according to his Facebook
