A Macedonian climber died today while making a final push for the summit of Mount Everest, the latest fatality of the current spring climbing season in the Nepali Himalayas. The 62-year-old collapsed above Camp Three at 7,200 metres. "Our team at the base camp confirms his death," Iswari Poudel of Himalayan Guides Nepal, his expedition organiser, told AFP. Local media reported that the climber died of a cardiac arrest. It was the fourth death of the season. Victoria, the south-eastern state of Australia, is expecting 10-15 per cent rise in Indian tourist arrivals to 1.58-1.65 lakh this year, an Australian tourism firm has said. "We continued to witness strong growth in overall tourist arrivals in 2017 with 2.9 million travellers visiting Victoria. Of this, India recorded the strongest growth with 1,44,200 tourist arrivals last year, a growth of 22.6 per cent over 2016," Visit Victoria Head of International Markets Carmen Smith told PTI here. The recently introduced e-visa facilities for Indians have further boosted tourist arrivals from India, she added. Smith said, looking at the current trend this year since January, we expect to welcome more Indians. Kerala is targeting up to 15 per cent growth in number of tourist arrivals in 2018 as it undertakes a slew of initiatives to hard sell the state as a preferred tourist destination, a senior government official said. Kerala witnessed overall growth of 10.94 per cent in number of tourist arrivals to the state in 2017. Domestic tourists rose by 11.39 per cent, while the number of foreign tourists rose by 5.1 per cent for the year. "We are looking at an overall growth of up to 15 per cent in total number of tourist arrivals to the state in 2018. We are looking at a growth of 15 per cent rise in domestic tourists and 10 per cent rise in foreign tourist arrivals," Kerala Tourism Director P Balakiran told PTI. A Russian climber died just below the summit of Lhotse, the world's fourth highest peak, in at least the third fatality of the spring climbing season in the Nepali Himalaya, officials said today. Rustem Amirov was alone on the 8,516 metre (27,940 feet) mountain, which neighbours Mount Everest, when he died of altitude related complications on Thursday. "He was climbing solo without any guides with him. The body has not been brought down to the base camp yet," Gyanendra Shrestha, a government liaison officer at Everest base camp, told AFP. Climbers attempting Lhotse use the same base camp as those aiming for Everest's summit. They follow the same route up the mountain, scaling the sheer Lhotse Face -- a 1,125 metre wall of ice -- before the path to the neighbouring summits divides.
