N Korea restricts Chinese tour groups ahead of anniversary: report

Pyongyang will suspend Chinese tour group visits to North Korea ahead of a high profile anniversary next month, according to news reports today. The North's Korea International Youth Travel Agency told a Chinese tourist agency that hotels in Pyongyang would be closed for renovations for 20 days starting Saturday, according to South Korean media reports. Another North Korean travel agency informed their Chinese partner that an unspecified "state decision" meant they had to stop receiving Chinese tour group package travellers until September 5, the reports said. North Korea has in the past restricted entry to foreigner tourists as the country prepares for significant events, giving a variety of reasons for the moves, Yonhap reported. The latest measure comes as the North prepares to mark the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the government. Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das today said tourists and devotees can go to Parasnath hill in Giridih either by walking or on palanquin from Madhuban, an official release said. "Motorcycle and other vehicles will remain prohibited. Old and Divyang may get permission to use district administrations vehicles in extreme situation. Apply this with immediate effect," the release said quoting the chief minister. Das said this while reviewing restoration of Water Temple situated at Parashnath mountain and overall development of tourism at the state secretariat here. Parasnath hills are a range of hills located in Giridih district. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centre for Jains. They call it Sammed Sikhar. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. To promote and preserve tribal culture, Mangraburu Temple will also be developed according to tourism plan, he said.

I-Day celebrations: 2,500 lamps illuminate Red Fort after sunset

Around 2,500 lamps will illuminate the historic Red Fort from 7:30 pm to 11 pm, starting today, in the run-up to Independence Day celebrations, a statement by the Ministry of Culture said. It is the first ever illumination of the historic monument's front fortification wall and its two important gateways--Lahori Gate and Delhi Gate, it said. The illumination ceremony was held in the presence of Minister of State for Culture Mahesh Sharma today. The 17th century Mughal era monument has been lit up with architectural lighting, known as 'element illumination', to enhance its architectural beauty after sunset, the statement said. "We have proposed to take up the illumination of all our 100 'Adarsh Smaraks' to highlight the archaeological magnificence of our historical monuments. This will not only make the local residents proud of their heritage, but will also help to promote night tourism in a big way," Sharma said. Battery operated vehicles to exhibit numbers in yellow, white on green licence plates

All battery-operated vehicles will have green number plates exhibiting registration marks in yellow and white for different categories, the government said today. "All battery-operated vehicles shall now exhibit their registration mark in yellow colour on green background for transport vehicles and for all other cases, in white colour on green background," Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said in a statement. A notification to this effect was issued today, it said. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified amendments to Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 to this effect. It had invited objections and suggestions from general public on these in May last. The purpose behind distinctive number plates is their easy identification for preferential treatment in parking, free entry in congested zones besides other proposed benefits like concessional toll, road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari has said earlier.

S Chikkarangappa and SSP Chawrasia were chasing Thailand's Danthai Boonma, who went on a birdie spree with birdies in each of his first seven holes to blaze through the second round in 10-under 61 at the TAKE Solutions Masters. At 15-under, the 22-year-old Danthai is five shots ahead of second placed Argentine Miguel Carballo (66-66) and Maverick Antcliff (67-65) who are at 10-under. Foreign tourists taking keen interest to travel to Bengal

A good number of tourists from Europe and parts of Far East are taking keen interest in travelling to West Bengal during the Durga Pujas, which is being promoted by the state as the "largest festival in the world". 50 tourists stranded in Munnar

More than 50 tourists, including 24 from abroad, have been stranded in Idukki district of Kerala for the past two days as the road leading to their resort in Munnar was damaged in a landslide triggered by heavy rains. The foreign tourists are from countries, including Russia, Saudi Arabia and Oman, officials said. Kerala Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said all the tourists of Plum Judy resort at Pallivasal in Munnar were safe. He said the state government has asked the Army to help clear the road. Authorities have been directed to shift the tourists to a safer place, officials said. The resort management has been asked to provide food and all necessary amenities to the tourists free of cost, they said. "The tourists will be shifted to Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) hotels once the road is cleared," P Bala Kiran, Director, Kerala Tourism said. Elderly American found dead in hotel room in Uttarakhand

An elderly American was found dead in his hotel room at Bhimtal in the district, police said today. Stephen Daniel (66) was found dead in his room at Greenwood Hotel yesterday, Nainital SP Harish Chandra Sati said. The hotel staff learned about his death when a foul smell began to emanate from his room, the official said, adding that it suggested he died a couple of days earlier. They broke open the door as it was bolted from inside and they found Daniel lying dead on his bed, he said. The US embassy was informed about the incident, Sati said. Daniel, who hailed from Pennsylvania and was a divorcee, came to India via Nepal on May 30 on a valid visa and passport, the official said. He was last seen by the hotel staff on Sunday when they delivered soup to his room, the SP said.

Malta eyes 20% growth in Indian tourist arrivals in 2018

Malta, a small island country in the Mediterranean Sea, is eyeing a 20 per cent growth in Indian tourist arrivals this year. Around 4,000 Indian tourists visited Malta in 2017. "With India being one of the biggest emerging markets for tourism in Malta, we want to tap its potential. We expect the number of tourists will continue to increase in the coming years," Malta tourism minister Konrad Mizzi told PTI. The minister further said he expects the footfalls from India to grow over 20 per cent in 2018. "Our vision is to register sustained increases of tourism from the Indian market," he added. After terrifying Tour crash, Gilbert is back on his bike

Belgian Philippe Gilbert, who broke a kneecap in a spectacular crash on the Tour de France, posted on social media today that he has climbed back in the saddle.
