J&K Guv honours 13 men and women under CRPF role model scheme

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik Sunday honoured 13 men and women describing them as "role models" and saying that the youths of the state have the potential to compete at national and international levels and bring laurels to the state and the country, if given right direction. The governor honoured 13 persons, chosen as "role models" as part of a CRPF's Civic Action Programme, initiated by Special Director General (J&K Zone) VSK Kaumudi of the paramilitary force. "This programme is of high importance and is aimed at motivating youths to prove their mettle in their respective fields. A role model is one who becomes an icon in personal life and inspires the others," Malik said. Of the 13 persons, nine were honoured for their contributions in the field of sports. They included Hanaya Nisar, Rasikh Salam Dar, Rishab Verma, Bilquis Mir, Noor ul Haya, Jagmohan Singh, Diya Devi, Zainab Mushtaq and CRPF Deputy Commandant Rigzin Angma. Malik also honoured three others - Dharam .

India's former ambassador to the US, Nirupama Rao, will speak on Mahatma Gandhi's influence on American civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr in Houston on Tuesday. Three Delhi tourists killed as car falls into gorge near Mussoorie

Three Delhi residents were killed and one was critically injured early Saturday when their car fell into a deep gorge near Mussoorie, police said. The mishap occurred in the wee hours near Suwakholi. The tourists were on their way to Mussoorie from Dhanolti, a police official in Mussoorie said. All three persons died on the spot, he said, adding the injured has been admitted at the Doon Medical College and Hospital, Dehradun. All the occupants of the car were residents of Lakshmi Nagar, Delhi. The deceased were identified as Suraj Rawat, Prince Tanwar and Mannu. The injured was identified as Rahul Rawat, the SHO said.

Malaysian state choses new sultan, expected to be elected king

A Malaysian state announced it had a new sultan Saturday, who is expected to be elected king after the former monarch abdicated following his reported marriage to a Russian former beauty queen. Tengku Abdullah Shah has replaced his father, Sultan Ahmad Shah as the ruler of Pahang state, the official Bernama news agency said, citing a senior palace official. Local reports said the move was designed to pave the way for Sultan Abdullah to be chosen as the next king of Malaysia by the Council of Rulers, who will chose a new king on January 24. Bag containing over Rs 37 lakh found on railway track

A bag containing unaccounted cash of Rs 37.26 lakh was found near a railway track here Friday, police said. A man, who spotted the bag, handed it over to police. Police said it might have been thrown out of a train. Income tax officials have been informed about the seizure, the police said. Police said five people, who claimed that the money was theirs, were being questioned. Investigations were on by the income tax sleuths and the police, they added.
