Govt permits aluminium industry to import pet coke

The government Tuesday permitted imports of certain quantity of pet coke, used for fuel purpose, for anode making by the aluminium industry. In a notification, the commerce ministry's arm the directorate general of foreign trade (DGFT) also said that imports of 1.4 MT per annum pet coke is allowed for producing calcined pet coke by the Calcined Pet Coke manufacturing units on actual user condition. "Apart from the five industries -- cement, lime klin, calcium carbide, gasification industries, and graphite electrode industry, import of 0.5 MT per annum of pet coke for anode making by the aluminium industry" is allowed actual user condition, it said. In general, import of pet coke for fuel purpose is prohibited. This is used as feed stock or in the manufacturing process only on actual user basis.

Newborn baby boy found abandoned in a roadside drain

A newborn baby boy was found abandoned in a roadside drain near Chorada Chhak in Odishas Jajpur district, police said Tuesday. The infant, believed to be between just five and six hours old, was rescued by a local and admitted to a hospital at Jajpur Road on Monday night, they said adding the condition of the newborn is fine. "I heard a crying sound from the road side drain on Monday night. I went to the spot presuming it was a kitten or puppy. I saw a new born baby boy lying inside the drain. The baby was covered with dirt and insects. I washed the newborn and cleansed him," said Rao Babu, who found the baby. He then informed the local police about the incident last night. "On being informed, we reached the spot and admitted the baby to hospital at Jajpur Road. We are checking the hospitals in and around the Vyas Nagar town for deliveries to find out who abandoned the baby and how he landed inside the drain," said Amitabha Mohapatra, inspector-in-charge of Jajpur Road .

Fetal remains found at 3rd funeral home in Michigan

Decades-old fetal remains have been found at another Michigan funeral home the third such grim discovery in the state in less than two weeks. An asbestos-removal crew on Monday discovered the remains of two fetuses at the former Mowen Funeral Home in Owosso, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) northwest of Detroit. On Friday, police removed the remains of 63 fetuses from Perry Funeral Home in Detroit. The remains of 10 fetuses and a still-born infant were found October 12 at the Cantrell Funeral Home in Detroit. Police say the Owosso remains were found in a casket inside a wooden box in a closet. Markings on the box indicate it is more than 50 years old. The Mowen Funeral Home has been closed two years.

How much will you pay as per 'polluter pays principle': SC asks Graphite India

The Supreme Court Tuesday asked Graphite India Ltd (GIL) as to how much it was willing to pay under the 'polluter pays principle' for its Bengaluru plant. The apex court also pulled up the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) for "doing nothing" to curb pollution in Bengaluru even as the city was grappling with the problem. "Have you been to Bengaluru? There is so much pollution there. What the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board is doing? You are just wasting Bengaluru city. You are doing nothing," a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta told the counsel appearing for the KSPCB. The bench asked senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for GIL, as to how much would they pay as per 'polluter pays principle'.
