Sujatha, a 47-year-old Indian elephant at a popular zoo in the US state of California, has been euthanised after the "beloved" animal failed to respond to an array of treatments employed to address her old age complications. The Santa Barbara Zoo announced on Wednesday the passing of Sujatha, one of its two Asian elephants. Sujatha arrived at the zoo from India in 1972 at the age of one-and-a-half years with her companion Little Mac. The 46-year-old companion was given immediate access in order to grieve. Former Jharkhand minister Devdayal Kushwaha passed away at a hospital here Wednesday, family sources said. Kushwaha was 82 and is survived by wife and son, the sources said. He was unwell for the last one month. Kushwaha won on BJP ticket from Hazaribagh Assembly constituency in 1990, 1995 and 2000 and became a cabinet minister in the erstwhile Babulal Marandi and Arjun Munda governments. Former Janata Party MP Bateswar Hembram passed away following protracted illness at his Kothia Borabad residence in Dumka district, family sources said Wednesday. He died on Tuesday at the age of 87, one of his grandsons Omprakash Hembram said. He was born on April 30, 1931 and survived by a son, three daughters and six grandchildren, Omprakash said. Hembram contested as a Janata Party candidate in 1977 and defeated Congress nominee Prithivichandra Kisko. Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das expressed condolence following the death of Hembram.

West Bengal govt to confer puja award to 75 puja committees
The West Bengal government has announced the names of 75 puja committees for the Biswa Bangla Sharad Samman awards in the state. The awards will be given for various categories, including the best idol, best pandal, best illumination work and best concept. Minister of State for Information and Cultural Affairs Indranil Sen said on Monday that the award-winning puja committees also included those from outside Kolkata. The 'Biswa Bangla Sharad Samman' is the first such initiative by any state to honour organisers of the grand festival, which draws millions of people to the pandals during the four-day festival, Sen said. Crowd puller among the pujas held in the city, Baghbazar Sarbojonin and Ekdalia Evergreen would be honoured in the 'best sabeki' category for retaining traditions (sabeki) in their puja celebrations and conventional idols over the decades.
