Nearly 50,000 nominations for 2019 Padma awards

Nearly 50,000 nominations for the 2019 Padma awards, which are given for work of distinction and exceptional achievement in different fields, have been received by the Home Ministry. The record number of 49,992 nominations for the Padma awards received is 32 times higher over the nominations received in 2010 when just 1,313 nominations were received from general public, a home ministry statement said. In 2017, the total number of nominations received was 35,595 and in 2016 the number was 18,768. While 84 distinguished people were honoured with the Padma awards in 2018, a total of 89 prominent people were given the awards in 2017. The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. The award seeks to recognise 'work of distinction' and is given for distinguished and exceptional achievements and service in all fields and disciplines, such as, art, literature

Obama Foundation aims to boost education of girls worldwide

The Obama Foundation is launching an initiative aimed at boosting educational opportunities for girls around the world. Former first lady Michelle Obama on Thursday announced the launch of the Global Girls Alliance that will work with organisations worldwide to increase public awareness and action. Obama says the alliance aims to lifting up grassroots leaders all over the world who want to clear away the hurdles that many girls face when trying to get an education. The Chicago-based foundation says more than 98 million adolescent girls worldwide don't go to school. The alliance's website highlights programs around the world and offers ways for the public to support those programs. The Obama Foundation was started in 2014 with the aim of continuing "the great, unfinished project of renewal and global progress.

Case against Prateik Babbar after his car hits scooter in Goa

A case of rash driving has been registered against Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar by Goa police after his car allegedly dashed a scooter. The mishap happened on Panaji-Mapusa highway Wednesday evening, said inspector Paresh Naik of the Porvorim police station. Paulo Correa, the complainant, alleged that a car driven by Babbar dashed against his scooter when he was riding with his sister. After the mishap there was an altercation and Babbar used filthy language against them, he alleged. Babbar, on his part, filed a complaint against Correa, alleging that Correa smashed his car's window-shield, the police official said. "We have seized the car," said inspector Naik, adding that a case under the Motor Vehicles Act has been registered and further probe is on.

HP Olympic Association to honour Asian Games medal winners

The Himachal Pradesh Olympic Association (HPOA) Wednesday decided to honour all athletes who won medals at the recently concluded Asian Games. This decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the state association's president Anurag Thakur, who is also BJP MP from Hamirpur. At the meeting, it was decided that Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and state Sports Minister Govind Thakur would honour the winners during the function that will be held shortly. The venue for the function is yet to be decided. Not only will the medal winners be felicitated but even their coaches and support staff, officials said.
